Jura_bio is bringing about some most exciting breakthrough in synthetic biology! The question now is how to apply this method to solve important real world problems.

I’m thrilled to announce: at @jura_bio we’ve constructed a new kind of generative protein model, which allows us to manufacture its generated designs in the real world at petascale. Paper: Blog:

@Goodflies The fact that the government even needs to post signs on this issue tells you something.

@rita_strack @Goodflies The problem with trying to use cash in Beijing is that many vendors don't have cash and won't be able to give you the change. Last year when I was in China, I saw even some beggars are not accepting cash anymore...

@rita_strack Bring suncream, and a shady hat. You are going to need it in July. Get a VPN. In Beijing you will have trouble using credit cards or cash. Unless your host will arrange someone to accompany you all the time, install either Alipay or wechat and charge your e-wallet.

@LauraDeming All preclinical models are problematic in one way or another. But some models will turn out to be more useful than others.

@LauraDeming At least in the cancer field the problem with "good preclinical model" is that good preclinical model is defined retrospectively based on the outcome of therapeutic development. Bad preclinical models are likely to screw your project, but good models are hard to come by.

A key factor Kariko could never land a tenure-track position was her inability to win NIH grants. Given the ultracompetitiveness of the modern grant system, and the risk-aversive tendency of the NIH funding mechanism, Kariko's "failure" was hardly surprising.

Calcium imaging based on GECIs is one of the most important tools for systems neuroscience. But tuning GECIs' spectra is non-trivial. Chemigenetic calcium indicators provide a modular platform for spectral tuning and yielded a far-red calcium indicator demonstrated in vivo!

Our #chemigenetic #fluorescent calcium indicator WHaloCaMP is now out on #bioRxiv : WHaloCaMP can be used to report on neuronal activity in flies, zebrafish and mice. WHaloCaMP is great for #multiplexedimaging. A 🧵:
