On 4 April this "Roman silver amulet of a grotesque face ( 1-2 century A.D.)" is being auctioned, est. £2,000-3,000. It supposedly comes from an "Esteemed European Collection". My God, they didn't even try to hide it. You can even see the kippah.

Yesterday the Church of St Cornelius & St Cyprian in La Baconnière (northwest France) was demolished. It dated back to the 12th century (rebuilt in the 19th), with a bell from 1584 & stained glass windows by Auguste Alleaume. It will be replaced by a "symbolic gathering place".

If you have children, motivate them to read the Greco-Roman myths & pre-WWII books about the history of Europe. These were the first things I read as a boy, and they completely immunised me against all subsequent ideologies. Should be #1 priority in any kid's education.

@ross66643289 I think that is a good attitude. It's worth seeking out a church where there are people your age or with a similar disposition to you. Last winter I attended mass at a local church in Prague and everyone had a great time socialising afterwards. 👍

I’m in Luxor, Upper Egypt. Behind me stand the Colossi of Memnon. In antiquity, Roman tourists would visit the northern statue at sunrise to hear it ‘sing’, which they believed brought good luck. This whistling was due to a crack in the stone, caused by an earthquake in 27 BC.

Someone I considered a close friend has been arrested. Apparently she has smuggled art but also made forgeries and sold them on the art market. I'm not sure whether I should reserve judgment or share more information with you. One of my paintings is still at her home.😬

Portrait of Philip the Good Est. £4-6,000, sold today for £203,600! The Duke of Burgundy (r. 1419-1467) was originally painted by Rogier van der Weyden c.1450. This is only a 17th-century copy. Compare to the much better Dijon copy (2nd pic) and a drawing with his son Charles.

Beautiful day in Aachen, visiting the Dom, one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe, constructed by order of Charlemagne, who was buried there in 814. Alas, Allied bombing destroyed the cloister, much of the 14th-century choir hall, the Neo-Gothic altar, and the Holiness Chapel.

Evelyne points out that Rembrandt painted The Standard Bearer (a self-portrait) when he turned 30 - now look how that age is represented in ‘Stages of Man’s Life’ iconography!

@rijksmuseum 🤔 👉

Happy Birthday to my dear father! Thank you Leo for instilling in me a love for history, a passion for books and a deep sense of patriotism. A man's journey is made much easier simply by having a good father. ❤️

Portrait of a noblewoman by the mysterious "Master of the Countess of Warwick" Est. £2-3,000 Sold for £10,000 A truly delightful little painting. Love the black slashed sleeves intended to reveal the expensive layers of fabric underneath. Would you buy a painting like this?

A major Dutch auction house sold this "lady in a 17th-century interior" for €330. Even that's far too much. It's a very weak copy of the already questionable "circle of Rembrandt" (right) that was deaccessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2012. Poor due diligence!

I really like the continuity between the portrait and the floor. But someone should have told the artist how the painting was going to be placed…

@bid12345193691 Is it possible that you looked at last year's auction, in which this same object seemingly remained unsold?

@DreyfusJames Whenever I use the underground, which is daily, I always make a point of standing so that other people can sit down. I am a fit young man after all. All of this is extremely petty.

@woetoconquered @gunsnrosesgirl3 This is not the way to remove varnish. Unless you don't care about abrasion to the original paint underneath, and you just want to earn a quick buck. You work in small patches at a time to prevent unnecessary damage. He clearly thinks this painting is not very valuable/important.

Another treasure from folk-rock singer Marc Ellington's castle in Scotland! This German panel shows Mary being coronated by God and Christ on a bank of cherubim and swirling clouds, a kneeling patron below. Given its age (16th century) and size (89x85x14cm), a steal at £3,600!
