Swyft Cities is here to revolutionize transportation and real estate! An innovative gondola system combines autonomous pods w/ lightweight, fixed cable infrastructure to move passengers efficiently w/ significantly lower cost-per-mile & less emissions than traditional options.👇
@MarkDavis
26-lane freeways like in Houston are massive, costly boondoggles that waste money and grab land. (BTW entire neighborhoods were bulldozed to make freeways)
People say "of course European cities are walkable, they were never car-centric to begin with" The truth is, cities like Valencia were as car-centric as the US, they've just made a dedicated effort to reverse it & make cities about people, not cars📸

It's only 2 blocks, but Minneapolis has the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District which not only has no cars but no streets! All homes are built are on quarter-lots. A hidden gem in the city!

Many people are under the mistaken impression that Europe was somehow never as car-centric as the US, and has always been magically car-free. Truth is, cities like Amsterdam and Paris made a dedicated effort to give their cities back to the people.

People thought the Chinese were crazy when they built that station in Chongqing. When they build cities FIRST (because of tax/investment incentives) they end up with infamous "ghost cities." Good transit PRODUCES development, not always the other way around 🚅🚅🚅🏠🏠🏠

When SimCity was being developed, the lead designer found that accurately modeling parking would ruin the game: "we were originally just going to model real cities, but we quickly realized our game was going to be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots."
@Boenau
This literally happens every 10 minutes in the United States with far worse consequences. 7,388 pedestrians deaths, 60,577 pedestrian injuries last year

If a REPUBLICAN had written this bill, you'd be hailing it as "an innovative reduction in burdensome government regulations that are strangling our small businesses"

110 people died in car accidents today. 10 pedestrians were struck and killed today. And apparently that's considered completely acceptable, normal and not worthy of any action to prevent.

What he meant to say was, "Detroit needs a better public transportation system and create more walkable neighborhoods to create more foot traffic to support retail businesses"🙄
@BrentToderian
@schlijper
Amsterdam also cut speed limits to 30kph from 50kph, and are looking to divert through-traffic that unnecessarily cuts through the heart of the city.

"The Columbia-Savin Hill Civic Association said it supports greater housing & realizes the area could see up to 10,000 new housing units, but opposed the proposal because this specific proposal is simply too far out of character" Srsly?🙄🙄🙄
@Boenau
Pedestrians legally have right-of-way in all marked crosswalks. The fact that signs have to be posted reminding licensed drivers of their legal requirements shows there is no respect for pedestrians.
@DavidNightjet
Subways are great...if you have the billions to build them, and the right population density to support it.😁Most cities, eh, not so much.
@andeholmes
@the_transit_guy
Again, completely untrue. Large roads REDUCE economic activity, jobs, tax revenue & housing. Walkable urban areas are less than 1% of land but produce 20% of the entire country's GDP
@the_transit_guy
Someday, archeologists will ponder why uncivilized societies created these odd patterns of housing & thoroughfares in the middle of nowhere and called them "suburbs"😂

Absolutely! We're big believers in multimodal and people having different transportation options depending on use case, distance, etc. Swyft Cities complements busses, bikes, walking & more to reduce congestion, create more livable spaces, etc.

Several other studies found similar results: 2015 study of Toronto’s Parkdale neighborhood found half of business owners estimated +25% of customers arrived by car. In fact, it was 4%. Walked or cycled? 72%. Closing central Madrid to cars in 2018 boosted retail spending 9.5%
Waterfront Park in San Diego was once 2 massive parking lots. Today, it’s a world-class park for everyone to enjoy🌊🏖️🌴 A much better use of public space that should be replicated in any city.

I love that term "Gentle Density". A lot of people freak out when they hear Density and think it means their neighborhood will suddenly have a dozen Willis Towers and become a Concrete Canyon. I don't think too many people would object to this kind of Gentle Density.

In the mid-20th Century, Los Angeles had the world's most extensive streetcar network. Whether we blame city planners, General Motors or Who Framed Roger Rabbit, well, we know what happened next. The city went all-in on cars instead of transit

A car (or 4-ton SUV) hits you with TWICE the impact force at 30 mph vs 20 mph, and FOUR TIMES more at 40mph🚶💥🚙
Because force is weight x velocity SQUARED

Right Turn on Red took hold following the 1973 Oil Crisis. It's now outmoded and absolutely not worth putting pedestrians and bicyclists' lives at risk just to save a few drops of gas.
People love to say "Paris was never a car-centric city in the first place". The truth is, it was as car-centric as any American city. The difference is, they've made a concerted effort to make the city about people, not cars.
The narrow, car-free streets of Philadelphia are some of the most beloved places in the city. They’re also some of the most expensive areas to live, partially due to scarcity, since we’ve made this development style illegal to build nearly everywhere in America.
Many people move to the suburbs when they have a family, but then find themselves more isolated than ever before. In contrast, walkable urban neighborhoods provide nearby access to amenities and more chance encounters that build community.
@StrongTowns
Notice it says streets are supposed to be PLACES: homes, shops, restaurants, businesses -- not something you pass through to get to a different place.

Like so many cities, Kansas City has one of the nation's most extensive streetcar networks with 21 lines, until car/bus, oil & tire companies replaced them with stroads & highways. See: U.S. v. National City Lines, Inc., et al lawsuit.
