I’m currently in the process of seeing my mother as a person, seeing what she had available and what she didn’t, and realizing that on my worst day with 1/10 of her resources in terms of health and village I’m 10000x better a parent than her at her best. She was trying her worst.
We can “see our parents as people” with “their own traumas” who “did the best they could” while also being honest about the fact that (for some) their best was harmful, violent, horrific. For some, their continued behavior adds to the horror and our distance saved our lives.
