I turned down an NFT project that offered me close to half a million dollars to make a bunch of Photoshop layers that could be used to generate a bunch of nfts. I don't care what they offer, no amount of money will ever get me to use layers.
Twitter is a good reminder that in modern society, there is nothing more terrifying than a person without a creative (or physical) hobby that they're very passionate about. Just joyless people spreading misery.
Stop letting AI art defenders obfuscate the details. Dataset collection and training is not a transformative act. Data compression and encoding does not bypass legal protection, no matter how foreign it may appear to our human standards.
Meanwhile, in reality land, countless artists like myself have dedicated lives to providing free and accessible art education to all. Why? Because we want to share the joy of art with as many people as we can.
I agree with this sentiment of social media being horrible on a young mind, but our parents have also proved that hopping into social media without a prior understanding of Internet culture will simply crack your brain in half at any age.
For 8 years, this book has easily been my most prized art possession (and I know a lot of us feel that way about our KJG books). It cheers me up anytime I have a rough day... and I think it still will, but it definitely has a bit of a sting now.
A shockingly dark day for the art world. Kim Jung Gi offered us every ounce of himself and never held back anything... that is the beacon we will always look to for greatness.
Haha, ignoring the fact that he can't seem to grasp the bigger concepts, it's amazing that he unironically used THIS slide to prove that AI does NOT contain a legally viable amount of the original image data:
@samdoesarts
You're a good person. People could make a case for either direction (artistic freedom vs the messages we send with art), but I think you've handled this well. Much respect.
One thing that helped snap me out of my early toxic online years was to just stop taking life advice from people that were miserably unhappy and constantly angry at everything.
Digital devices are not afforded the same "observational rights" as humans. You can't just buy an extra ticket for a video camera and take it to watch Avatar with you. And you're definitely not allowed to sell those "observations" no matter how compressed the format.
UPDATE (since the last tweet blew up): the NFT project responded to me declining them by upping their offer to $560k. I'll give you all a non-joking version of my views on this: (Small thread)
In order to help artists advocate for themselves against "AI" rhetoric, I'm going to give a quick run down of current US laws regarding copyright and fair use. (A quick disclaimer: there are currently NO direct legal precedents established for AI art training) 1/🧵
It can't be overstated how abhorrent it is to even mildly suggest that criminal behavior stems from genetics/skin tone and not material conditions/poverty. Like, holy shit, it's 2023, how is anyone remotely tolerating this.
It's the CEO of Epic saying something so dumb that it has 84,000+ views and 20 likes. Apparently he doesn't know what gatekeeping is OR what legally qualifies as fair use.
No one should deal with threats obviously, but you can't expect to maintain admiration of fans if you go in a direction that opposes their ethical standards. If you have conviction in your ethical standards, then accept that you will lose the support of people who oppose them?
Nfts has damaged my reputation so much In the art community. I don't get anywhere near much work as I did anymore,lost friends, many followers, signed up to spam and vulgar things constantly, hate mail, death threats. I think everyone in nfts has experienced all of the above
Oh yeah, I sometimes do art when I'm not making dope tweets. This was made for my recent brainstorm mech class. Got a new Brainstorm class on stylized portraits starting THIS Sunday! Should be fun:
It's always amazing how much casual racism exists on both the right and left when it comes to interracial couples. I'm ashamed to say I'm guilty of it too, despite being in an interracial marriage for many years, I still catch myself judging other interracial couples.
But also, like, they know that the point of the golden ratio isn't to trace a curve, right? (It's meant to represent ratios of ideally observable hierarchy). That gif is literally just marketing bullshit to sell the design to dumb CEOs.
I don't know if it's nature or nurture or what, but to me... the most fascinating human trait that people decide upon in their entire life is when they become a tank or healer or DPS or support.
It is a nice reminder that the poison route is always open. Even if this didn't work, it could just become standard practice to upload a borked version alongside everything you post. We could have a weird social media negaverse where AIs generate a poison version of everything.
Was originally going to also do an april fools joke related to NFTs, but instead I'll just leave this creation here. The corniest genre of NFTs are the ones that just tack in references to crypto/elon musk/glitch art to desperately appeal to crypto-audiences.
#nftart

$30 per hour should be considered base level minimum for any art job from even a beginner artist. Any client not willing to pay that is not a proper client. Don't get bullied. (If you want to charge less for casual fun stuff from peers and friends, that's certainly up to you)
I love the art community as a whole for really digging in and making this the best time in history to make a living as an artist. Now we just need to focus on sustaining that and not letting other industries steal back what we've built.
So, keep embracing fun and passion in your art. It's got me to a great place in the art world (emotionally and financially), and it can do the same for you.
Full vulnerability, please be charitable: I've been a gender abolitionist for many years, but I never talk much about it because I'm afraid it would sound anti-trans, despite that not being the intention. How do people square this concept?
Throughout my career, I've met plenty of obscenely wealthy crypto bros and tech people. I'm always reasonable and polite toward them, but I assure you, they are without exception also the dumbest people I've ever met.
Cracking up at the tangents in the first one, it gave her a giant rock nose. Every update takes them further away from art by trying to be more polished.
Nevermind that, squint your eyes and see how aesthetically pleasing the use of lighting and color is in this screenshot. Feels like a master's painting.
Lol, "X". Stop reminding me of how cringe it was to be a teenage boy. Dude is probably going to get rid of color next and make the interface various shades of black.
You would think after losing the "scientific reality" battle with suffragettes, civil rights, and gay rights... maybe there would be more self-awareness. Will they ever find a minority group small enough to finally beat? It won't be this one. Gender freedom is reality.
The art community as a whole does provide a huge source of happiness for me, and I was only able to get to where I am today by adjusting my philosophy and making the idea of art more about the joy of the process rather than the end products. (->)
That was the only reason I stuck to it through the darker times. If the whole art world was just a place for producing speculative investments commodities, then I know I wouldn't have ever come back to it and got to where I am today. (->)
Remember how DeviantART was always just a mess of toxic "muh style" attitudes and awkward cringe, but you still went there because a bunch of pro artists you loved would post stuff there? America is the deviantart of countries.
I am lucky enough to have made it to a point in my career where I am financially stable (along with almost everyone else who gets offers like this). Large amounts of money are fun, sure, but it honestly wouldn't have a large effect on my day to day happiness levels. (->)
Social media can feel frustrating for a lot of artists, but there are two mentalities that have kept it a super positive place for me where I can be genuinely happy in other's successes. 1. I'm an art fanatic first, and an artist second. 2. "A rising tide lifts all boats."
If they actually start prioritizing check mark posts on my home page, I'll probably just mass-block all checkmarks. Nothing will get in the way of enjoying obscure Japanese gunpla tweets.
Not gonna lie, on a galactic level it would be pretty funny if arts & culture were the first careers that humans decided to make fully controlled by AI.

@Sin_Salt
Hmm, this was just about how Twitter gives you a window into other people, and people without a passion in their life seem to just fixate on miserable things. Twitter has a lot of great niche communities hidden around.
Holy shit, the amount of pro 2A people that are saying things like, "we should focus more on bullying and mental health".... while they've literally spent the past 10 years complaining about "woke shit" turning kids into "snowflakes". WHY DO YOU THINK WE WERE DOING THAT STUFF???
Was leaving a restaurant earlier and saw the kitchen staff in a panic because an order had just come in for an "unchopped salad" and they couldn't decide on what that meant.
I always forget to post art on twitter also! Ahh, been focusing on painting realism so far this month. I have June Spoons and Tiffany Poon (
@Tiffanypianist
). Coming soon.. ruins, moons, racoons, and Dune!
There are 46 countries that offer you a longer average life expectancy than America. It's the only metric that matters, yet we don't want to give up guns or have meaningful health care. Conservatives have made us a country of quitters who refuse to sacrifice anything.
Good news, everyone, I've discovered a new technology that makes it free for you to own this NFT with no environmental impact. Simply right-click and save-image and you can have your very own "unique" copy of this art.
As dumb and wasteful as NFTs are, I can at least enjoy the cosmic comedy of them now that they focus more on sports highlights and pixel art avatars of donkeys smoking crack. Thank you to the art community for largely pulling through and not buying into the garbage.
Remember to take time to decompress and care for your mental health if you need to. It doesn't make you complacent or a bad person. Progress is a marathon, not a sprint.
Was just thinking about how in History class growing up, we spent more time focusing on the battles in every war rather than on the causes, lead up, or aftermath.

@halfheartxi
If one party doesn't consent, the morals are pretty indefensible, I'm arguing legality because that's the precedent that really matters long term.
@SocDoneLeft
You don't understand the issue at hand. The concept of "AI art" isn't the problem. Current models are using mass datasets of people's art with zero permission and making money off it. Please learn more.
Lol, I'm so here for this. Either Twitter remains the same and Elon Musk is exposed as an idiot because of that, or Twitter falls apart and Elon Musk is exposed as an idiot because of that.
Finished Squid Game! It was an important parable about how if you give poor people money, they're just going to spend it on bad haircuts. I would have invested that money on a dinner date with Jay Z. Poor people will never understand the true wealth grindset.
People seem to be more insecure about their media tastes now than ever before. Does someone think your favorite movie/game/show/band sucks? Good. It's not an assault on your character... it's a glimmer of hope for a less homogenized media landscape.
Next time you're having a bad day, just remember that there are potentially hundreds of planets out there in the universe that are currently thriving with dinosaurs.
Some crazy updates today! I hit 500k subscribers on youtube last night! I have a special event planned for that, but I need to finish editing an anatomy video first... so, details next week!
Any time a shitty person in power (teachers/artists/industry) takes advantage of someone, never give them a pass or say it's only up to the victim to forgive then. The impact of these situations does irreplaceable damage toward the confidence and trust between all people.
For people that whine about political content, this is a block from my house. I have to live with these ignorant white supremacists ruining my city on a regular basis.
