guess it's my last week
@axios
, still a bit shocked and sad that half our team was laid off, but grateful to have learned so much from my kind, brilliant
@AxiosVisuals
coworkers // one last chart roundup of some faves from the past two years✨
NEW: Axios is laying off 50 people across the company. CEO
@JimVandeHei
just sent out this note — which says the layoffs are because of “changes in the media business”
i can't believe there's only two weeks left of my internship
@FiveThirtyEight
...grateful for this newsroom taking a chance on me and creating such an empowering, supportive space. i've learned so much from the brilliant people there and become a better visual journalist.
if you are a

this was a question that came up several times from attendees at our early career

as a student, i would look forward to this list every year for inspiration...and this year, I'm a contributor!
grateful to learn from and be part of this weird chArts crew🥰

i like putting charts i’ve made over time together to see what color palettes, forms and design solutions i gravitate towards…so, some charts of 2023:

For this week’s

in talking to dataviz friends from other newsrooms, i've learned the real rivalry is not which graphics team creates the coolest data stories, but which team is the ̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶u̶n̶h̶i̶n̶g̶e̶d̶ quirkiest.
aaah my first byline ever! beyond this milestone, this experience was a lesson in grappling with deadlines.
There's always more to work on, but for having 2 days to gather data, ideate, and build the viz + story, I'm happy! And grateful for all the amazing people I worked with
hope you never get laid off from your dataviz job but if you do go read the art of insight by

Based on some favorite charts from the past six months, I like squiggly arrows and textures and straying from our color palette 🤷🏽♀️
Hope the next six months brings long-form story design, new svelte components, and mixing analog elements into viz ✨
immensely proud of

Not every student "who wants to" can submit given the 15€ fee. Yet this is one of the few awards in dataviz & it can give early career folx exposure.
DM if you want to enter but can't pay the fee -- will pay for 5 students' fees (wish I could pay more, but am also a student)

I love my team!
-It's a fun, quirky, and compassionate culture
-I've learned so much from my team members who are generous in sharing their knowledge and feedback
-I have freedom to work on my own projects
i'm not quite sure what's next for me, but i'm trying to be more comfortable with ambiguity and to not define my self-worth by what i do and what i make. all i know is that i want to keep improving my data/design/dev skills and to rest a bit after graduating this past sept.
Had the honor of speaking with
@datadzif
, one of the most passionate people I’ve met in the
#dataviz
community!
We talked about creative energy, sharing work with a wider audience, and passion projects...our conversation left me energized and inspired as I hope it does for you!
In this edition of Early Career Corner,
@simranparwani

some questions:
-how to not let an org's styles affect my default ways of thinking?
-how to not tie my self-worth to my creative output?
-how to hone my craft in a sustainable way?
graduating in a pandemic was not fun but i'm finding my way and am grateful to do it in community

can't wait to see how
@lau_assanmal
challenges norms in academia. she makes every space she's in more compassionate and reflective. can't wait to see how she reimagines the classroom to be based on trust and inclusion and decolonizes her syllabi. What a force of a woman. so proud
When I feel uninspired, I look at Elena's graphics...she's an incredible data journo who will elevate a newsroom with her thoughtfulness and approach to design, i learned so much as an intern working with her!
she's truly one of the best dataviz designer/developers out there ✨
I got laid off from
@FiveThirtyEight
today. I've loved every second of my time here since day 1. This newsroom is full of great, kind, compassionate, funny people who have changed the landscape of data journalism. It's sad to see it suffer greatly with Disney's layoffs.
"Climate change worsened the flooding in Pakistan, to take a very clear example, yet the people of Pakistan created little of the atmospheric pollution that’s warming the planet."
to me, this piece exemplifies the best of data journalism and why its so important
also immensely grateful for all the journalists before me who have been so open and vulnerable about their layoffs and have normalized it (though why should it be so normal) // i feel less shame though it's hard for it not to feel like a reflection of my abilities
Got to make ternary plots for the first time! And worked with brilliant people in the process.

got to discuss this chart a bit more for

This week:
- a good chart made by someone else
- a serviceable chart that becomes much better in context
- great charts from before i was born
- a look at early 1990s big hair

@datavisclub
's shared doc book clubs are the only thing that comes to mind.
love these iterations, can we normalize sharing the behind the scenes of

?
as an early career person in dataviz, it's so inspiring when people share their processes. it reveals how much creativity is a practice and how little design changes can completely change a viz✨
i wish universities would stop calling these next steps "outcomes" as if our first job/graduate education determines the whole course of our lives. i also want to celebrate my friends without celebrating the elite institutions they will be part of. 3/n
can't believe we're halfway through the fellowship! It's been such a supportive atmosphere to learn and grow...from connecting with other fellows to our division standups to getting to build something that people actually use!

Bolding specific bar chart labels: sometimes you want to emphasize certain groups in a chart.

The game that broke our chart 🤯

Our chess advent calendar shall be updated Saturday and Sunday with games 7 and 8! Though it’s hard to imagine today’s game being topped
some of my friends and i aren't sure where in the world we will be or what we will be doing come September but I know we will be okay. I'm just so proud of all of us and feel so privileged to know such a quality group of people that will create change wherever they go.
different contexts but the same institutional problem--I'm reminded of Anushka's words in todays Gazelle article: "I sometimes feel like there’s a lot of space for me to say I’m not okay, but there isn’t space for me to actually not be okay."
her article:
@DataVizSociety
Thank you so much to everyone who has shared their thoughts so far! This is super helpful.
just generally grateful for this community being generous in sharing their experiences and advice 💜
Adding HTML to description: this was a
@ryanabest
discovery!
𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠: If you want to add a legend within the chart's description, you can just add HTML tags constructing the legend elements in the Description section of the Annotate tab.
I have the best team members who are v generous in sharing feedback. (Perhaps a bit too generous when it comes to their thoughts on colors <3)

making a lollipop chart: while DW doesn't have lollipop charts, you can add the lines to the points in a Scatterplot.
𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠:use a prog lang/spreadsheet tool to concatenate strings using the data values as x,y positions and paste into the Add custom lines and areas section
The story was about the decline in EV market share of the Nissan Leaf. After exploring the data, I wanted to convey both the Leaf’s rank and share of registrations. I showed my team two options:
(Line chart was made with DW + Rawgraphs → AI; bump chart was Rawgraphs → AI)
Next round of edits:
-Set the green and yellow lines to 100% opacity
-Make annos more concise
-Direct label colors (instead of legend)
-Make the curvy anno more legible
Here’s the final desktop version!

@YeroNiamadio
@YeroNiamadio
! hope you are doing well, thanks for the kind words <3 i use a range of tools...ggplot2 or D3.js or rawgraphs to make the viz...and then importing into Adobe Illustrator for the more design stuff. Also Datawrapper for things like line and bar charts and maps.
As a senior, I hope that our pieces will pave the way for having more data-driven and interactive journalism featured in The Gazelle long after I graduate.
Feedback always welcome!
Ana is such a thoughtful, creative human! from meeting in college during
@OutlierConf
to our rambles about creativity and postgrad existentialism, I’m excited to grow alongside her and witness all the amazing things she does and makes < 3
I’m officially coming out of my cave to celebrate and be grateful in this chaotic online space for being interviewed by the one and only
@simranparwani
for
@DataVizSociety
's Nightingale. Simran is simply the best, I am so lucky I connected so deeply with this amazing human.
Perhaps some of these "tricks" are obvious and already part of your workflows, but as someone who started using DW in my current role, finding these little things helped me feel more ownership of my design decisions while using a tool like DW.
What DW tricks have you found?
This is a chart I struggled with, almost abandoning the idea twice. Much gratitude for my amazing coworkers for their validation/ valuable feedback. Especially Jacque who made the biggest cracks in the case!
Broad edits:
-make metric clearer
-try vertical
-fix text hierarchy
Some key design decisions include:
-reducing the number of years shown
-using dotted lines to show when the song falls below top 50 (instead of just a gap in the step chart)
-adding the stream data as bubbles below the chart (rank shows relative popularity only)
If anyone has any feedback for how to do process threads, please let me know! I remember a couple of years ago, as a senior in college, data visualization in journalism seemed so mysterious, so just trying to open up my process and reflect on design decisions. < 3
When choosing the visualizations to build, while I prioritize user empathy and understanding, I've also been thinking about how I can use different visualizations (like this radial tree viz!) each piece to increase the data literacy of our community.
i have the coolest friends! so proud of you
@jasenlo123
<3 from our confused, existential conversations in high school in hk to now finding our paths in dataviz after college, i'm grateful to have known you through so many seasons of life and to be understood.
