Oh boy! Always knew the obscure doctoral work on smell and caste will one day be handy in a public debate. Smells carry caste & discrimination. How we smell & what we smell is deeply political & in our case, framed by caste. Read more here. DM for pdf.
I have received an overwhelmingly positive response on this launch from so many people. A lot of comments from young people who eat non-veg food saying “now my parents can also use zomato”.
I would like to repeat that this feature strictly serves a dietary preference. And I know

If more than a decade of research and contemporary politics could culminate in a photograph, it would be this. Gaurakshak Shoes. Somewhere in Uttar Pradesh.
India has the largest percentage of vegetarians in the world, and one of the most important feedback we’ve gotten from them is that they are very particular about how their food is cooked, and how their food is handled.

Interesting electoral move by SP in Agra. Jatavs have historically held a sway over politics, economy & social relations in the city. In particular the business owning Jatavs who funded the rise of BAMCEF & BSP (1/6).

Nothing wrong in doing a 'mujra'. The term means 'paying respect' in Urdu, Hindi & Marathi.
Everything wrong the way the PM is converting the term into a denigrating metaphor. A mujra is any day more respectable than this show.

In the absence of any sustained academic work on the MHA and most other ministries, this book could refocus attention to the inner workings of the Indian state. Huge amounts of information, archives and anecdotes for researchers to pick up and study further.
The breakneck speed of Mitra's writing and the wealth of information it conveys, makes one wish for an analytical pause, especially when examining certain moments of Indian politics. And also makes one wonder if 'stealth' captures all that complexity. But a must read overall.

There is a deep connection between smells and home-making. Cooking, cleaning, washing, organising are all activities which regulate smell. Much of this physical and sensory labour falls on women. Sarah Pink does a fantastic job of exploring this here

Again, with you on this. Academia is mostly clickbait. But then again it is a good place to approach researchers to send you or upload a copy. Also this article has just come out. Some journals do give full access at times for older articles.

I agree. There is very little work on caste & leisure. I can think of Chitra Joshi, Charu Gupta,
@UjithraP
and Renny Thomas whose work speaks to leisure. But the list for caste & labour is endless. Don't have a paper yet. Let's see how the discussion unfolds. Happy to share that
"They grew up to be valiant and intelligent and were eventually united with their father. Once she had witnessed the acceptance of her children by Rama, Sita sought final refuge in the arms of her mother Bhūmi" [2/3]
@psr_here
makes interesting arguments on the importance of sustaining an anti-caste Matua public sphere through print literature, cultural assertions and official recognition of Dalit icons and symbols.
Kardam's selection is a hat-tip to the history of assertive Jatav shoe factory owners in west UP. Backed by affirmative action,negotiating with the state for education & social status & using their shoe expertise, Jatavs continue to be relevant to politics in the state(6/6)
Partition changed the narrative. With the influx of Punjabi upper-caste capital & social networks in the shoe trade, Jatavs were sidelined as owners. A few persisted, often divesifying to other trades but at the cost of facing discrimination (5/6)
Not to be missed. Kerala HC was actually hearing a petiton to quash an FIR against a man watching porn on his phone. Note the fantastic leap from 'free' availability of porn to food on phones. Watching porn privately is ok, the judge noted. Mothers ordering food is not.
While most Jatavs now work in shoe factories in Agra, few business owners from the community remind us of the history of caste assertion in the region backed by economic and social gains accrued via the shoe industry. See Prof. Sudha Pai's work (2/6)
