In this new @TheJRAI article, I offer an ethnographic account of how rural women in India navigate the falsification of their complaints of gendered violence by villagers & local bureaucrats, and the implications this has for feminist analysis of the law.

@DrSamiSchalk I’m so infuriated that you were subject to this brutality. Respect and solidarity. Sending healing wishes.

@ActuallyyJP Totally, so many kinds of inequity that shape who is affected by this heat and how.

@veenadubal I cannot begin to imagine the depth of your sorrow. Sam was a truly remarkable soul. His compassion and commitment to justice left a deep impression on us from the moment we first met him. I am holding you and your family in the light. I hope he is at peace.

@shwetakrishnan So much, but just off the top of my head, pieces by Sophie Chao, María Elena García, Deborah Bird Rose, Thom Van Dooren (on mourning), Annu Jalais, Nayanika Mathur, Juno Parreñas, Alex Blanchette, Ambika Aiyadurai, Naisargi Dave, Alyssa Paredes. All excellent writers.

@AOHSUsometimesY I can only imagine. It’s maddening. I felt the same dislocation when I was in India this winter, and folks were telling me COVID was done while the US was collapsing.

@kookykarthik Not to mention the creepy story of how Boney abandoned the kids and flew to Venice because Beena aunty told him that some Italian dude had been flirting with Sridevi.

@SouthAsianBuoy Yes, please. I'm trying not to lose my shit at colleagues who think that only students (let alone staff and faculty) in South Asia have the right to be affected by what is going on. It's horrendous enough as is without having to constantly explain your mental state to people.

@shwetakrishnan Another vote for @AnnuJal & @JunoIsHere's fabulous books. I'm also excited about @NayanikaM's Crooked Cats. I'd add Benedicte Boisseron's Afro-Dog, Zakkiyah Iman Jackson's Becoming Human, Alex Nading's Mosquito Trails, Sophie Chao's work (no book yet), & Marcus Baynes-Rock's book.

@alfgunvald I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with this again, Alf. Solidarity. Unfortunately, from painful past experience with him, I don’t have much faith in the decency of our field.

@ShachiSeth This!! Unfortunately, the excuse that vicious, misogynistic, slanderous tweets were part of some higher "critique" worked for so many until the mask came off. Unfortunately there never is any reckoning because abuse is baked into this field and is part of becoming a "star".

@Mubbashir_R @AsheeshKSi This is just so enraging. And frankly it should give radical scholars of color pause before they consider working @Georgetown. I’m so sorry, Mubbashir. If only they understood what a brilliant scholar, inspiring teacher, and fabulous colleague they have lost.

@AniruddhaHD It really is alarming. Some of the bigger bats are dipping their bodies in the lake. I wonder if it’s a strategy to keep cool. But the smaller bats are dying in droves. It’s not even lack of water, just the heat in the air.

@MythriJega This made me sick to my stomach when I saw it this morning. There was something about that last line in particular. And to know that he didn't think twice about all the people he might infect in LKA (given that he was exposed). UGH. Thinking of you and yours, M. Lots of <3.

@jaredmargulies @maanbarua I love @maanbarua and @UEcologies work! Looking forward to reading more of it. But I was also thinking of work that takes the park as a social world and delves into everyday religiosity (eg. bhagwat kathas) & right-wing subjectivity; romance; exercise; & sociality, all together.

@Majuli_Chapori It really is so devastating. @Dr_mauraf is an incredible scholar, and this will be a huge blow to students at Muhlenberg who have lost a committed and compassionate teacher. She has always been an unwavering voice in favor of justice. Can't believe it.

@lightermachis Dude, seriously. I’m in France right now, and while the pastry is FABULOUS, unke khane me itna kam namak hai. 😭 About time someone punctures the mythology of French cuisine. How sophisticated is your technique if there’s no namak?!.

@mudede Yep! Academic freedom was always on shaky ground when it came to critiques of the Indian state, but things have really deteriorated since 2014. The space for dissent of any kind is shrinking rapidly, and the consequences are frightening. It’s really devastating.

@ritodhi_c @Ranjana_rahul @GeogSara @DrCRampini @PasangYangjee @SereanaNaepi @karlyannburch @ManishEcoHydro Thanks so much, Ritodhi. It’s really so dispiriting & enraging to see bullies thrive while kind, generous folks are pushed out of the academy every day. The only solace, as you point out, is the existence of those who invest in solidarity and support. May their numbers grow!.

@1bradweiss Thanks so much, Brad. I really appreciate the good wishes. It’s just so enraging because there was a year to prepare for this moment. The lapses and active negligence on part of the state are criminal. And people are dying in droves because of it.

@_super_bass YES! The idea that asking for empirical specificity, and what that entails in terms of ethics and politics, is "boring" or "unimaginative" says all you need to know about the state of our fields. It produces thin work and also does such a disservice to situated politics.

@dreamisgone93 Absolutely. I think some work in this field, despite being avowedly “political”, is obsessed with creating timeless theory, unmoored by the troublesome constraints of history and ongoing political struggles. That fantasy of being unmoored from time and space is so disturbing.

@Muralisvelan @MukulikaB I fully agree that this is primarily a politics of north and western India, and that this is not the case with the south (with the exception of Karnataka). My own work is on Uttarakhand, and my arguments are limited to that region.

@rajivmohabir The “she is a Guyanese” was just sickening. As for caste, when Nadia asked if one of the prospective matches knew about her being Guyanese, the matchmaker said caste was “no bar” for him, which effectively revealed that the “problem” of matchmaking for Nadia was caste.

@ProjectNewsLab As I just said to @MukulikaB, I think we urgently need analysis of how such everyday relationships are drawn into and weaponized by the politics of Hindu supremacy which then claims that the murders of minorities are acts of love: for cows, for Hindus, & for the Hindu nation.

@GeogSara This resonates so much with conversations in Uttarakhand. The idea that things are be-time - the idea that you could have forest fires in December, for example - is something that comes up all the time. It’s existentially exhausting to have to be ready for anything at any time.
