Love. Intimacy. Geopolitics. Political geographer at UNC-Chapel Hill. Author of Intimate Geopolitics and Political Geography: a Critical Introduction. She/her.
I am awkward about self-promotion. But assign my books 😇 & reach out if you’d like me to visit your class! ❤️🔥 I have written a political geography intro (
@WileyGeoAnthro
), an intimate geopolitics ethnography (
@RutgersUPress
), & co-edited a feminist geog book 😊 (
@WVUPRESS
)
Fighting awkward feelings to say I wrote a book. I worked hard to start from thinkers & theories that inspire me & my students. So I begin from edges & ideas that aren’t necessarily thought of as central to political geography. Discount code is SSH20 😄
Reviewing a paper and I am BEGGING you just BEGGING if you are going to talk about settler colonialism and Indigenous dispossession to READ and then CITE Native scholars how is this not obvious I am in pain trying to understand the logic here 😭😭😭

Folks!! I have been meaning and meaning to share this event put on by the lovely Making Abolition in Geography folks!!! November 4th, in RALEIGH!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
What political work does comfort do? When is discomfort politically productive? Who does the work of enduring discomfort? We take up these questions that feel too salient to our times in “Political geographies of discomfort feminism”
Universities sell “global” experience but are in a shambles when students assert global solidarities or acknowledge the historical and ongoing global inequalities that are manifest in the establishment and maintenance of the university itself.
I’m so glad to see Pallavi Gupta’s really careful, ethnographically and theoretically rigorous article out in the Annals: “Geographies of Waiting: Politics, Methods, and Praxis—A Case Study of Indian Railway Stations”
Rumors are true, I’ve been promoted to full professor, to my surprise & thanks to the love & support of so many & sheer luck. I feel humbled & grateful & well aware how many MUCH smarter & harder working scholars don’t get this far because of structural racism & other barriers.
Yay for
@GeogSara
being promoted to Full Professor! If there's anything I've learned in the 19 yrs since we sat together in grad school orientation, it's that if you're in a desert with nothing but a tiny pony (metaphorically speaking), it's good to have a Sara leading the way.
I feel so moved by the last days spent with my daughter at the UNC encampment, a space of love & care where she felt so safe & happy she didn’t want to leave. She’s making personalized thank you cards for organizers, if you are wondering what these “dangerous” activists are like.

I love political geography so much that...I wrote a book about it! It was a complete delight to read more widely in the discipline and find it to be full of vibrant & critical scholarship. Coming April 2020 thanks to the love and patience of my friends and family. ❤️🔥
My kid started a petition at her school for kids to be allowed to garden there and today the principal came in and said…ok kids let’s go garden then 😭😭😭 now it’s an optional activity every Tuesday and Wednesday for her class and she’s so happy 😭🌿🌱🍃🌱🌿🥺❤️🔥

❤️Abolition geographers!!❤️🔥 Pls join us at AAG to talk global struggles for abolition. We are an ad hoc coalition of geographers interested in the role of police, military, & surveillance on campuses, in our discipline, our departments, in our conferences, & our complicity.
One thing I LOVE about me (🙄) is that when I start prepping a lecture on political geography I completely forget I wrote a BOOK about it and just start flailing around from scratch like it’s a brand new topic.🙃😫😇😭
The latest in my collaboration w Andrew Curley on temporal geographies: we ask, where are Native people in the plantationocene? What do we see & not see if we take up this framework? Grateful to the

Am I your reviewer number 2??? Maybe!!!! But listen this could be like 3 papers I’ve reviewed this year so I’m going to need you all to stay home reading until you figure this out
Help!! Running a dissertation & thesis writing workshop! Y’all had such great advice last week re: comprehensive exams! What is your favorite advice for writing up? ✨✨
I’ll start with things I tell folks, but 1st is: your relationship to writing CAN change!! ❤️🔥

#AAG2021
folks, we are so excited for these 6 (!) sessions we made a playlist. 🥳 can’t wait to see you all day Saturday for our Desirable Futures Sessions! We wanna know: who’s the future for? Can’t wait to change how I think about time and desire. ✨
Folks! Since fall
@daniellepurifoy
& I have been working to launch a UNC Landback Abolition Project. Join us! Our classes are doing research for justice in service to those in relation to UNC near & far. We are soliciting community-driven questions:
This is truly heartbreaking and terrifying and every time I see one of these stories I can’t help but think about how it seems impossible for one of these events *not* to happen at, for example, a college campus.
These are the students admin told police to throw around & arrest & hurt and I will never forgive them. They want to stop people from getting hurt in Gaza, that’s their only goal. To end violence. Maybe everyone be so expansive in their love for others as these young people ♥️
I feel so moved by the last days spent with my daughter at the UNC encampment, a space of love & care where she felt so safe & happy she didn’t want to leave. She’s making personalized thank you cards for organizers, if you are wondering what these “dangerous” activists are like.

I was TRULY startled a couple weeks back to be notified I received the James Fisher Prize from the Association of Nepal and Himalayan Studies and today I got this lovely card and check too. Absolutely undeserved but I am really grateful! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

Very grateful for this engagement with my political geography book! As it came out in pandemic & is a different kind of book I sometimes feel it went into a void. Thank you!! 🙏“What’s the purpose of teaching political geography?”

Campus safe and beautiful a few days ago: eating bagels, drinking coffee, talking about books and how to stop an unjust war. ♥️♥️♥️ This is the peaceful world the students created and want for everyone: access to food, water, education, love. Please don’t believe the lies.
Privileged foreign tourists in the global south demanding the very most & trying to pay the least 🙄. The whole global economy is set up in your favor & you don’t deserve to pay local prices!!! You aren’t part of this community & cause too much trouble to get a discount! Thanks!
Whatever you are doing, please stop. Go read Dr. Pavithra Vasudevan's devastating, insightful, and richly researched article, on Badin, NC, "An Intimate Inventory of Race and Waste." I have been eagerly awaiting its publication.

🚨 Geography emergency pls help!!
@lara_lookabaugh
and I feel like there have to be geographers writing about the archive as a place or as a space. But we cannot find it! Is this you? Have you read something like this? Help!!!
Thanks!! 😊 💕
I wrote a thing. It turned into a manifesto about university intervention, ethics, & community-driven work. “My point here is that these examples of abuses related to access and knowledge production aren’t a perversion of the academic enterprise; they are a central imperative.”
Y’all please congratulate everyone’s favorite geographer, Dr. Andrew Curley, who not only just published a book but also just received U of Arizona’s Early Career Scholar Award.🏆
@wahgraphy
we all have learned so much from you even tho or perhaps because you’re also goofy ❤️🔥🤗
Student activists have profoundly shaped our university spaces and we are in their debt. I’m so grateful Omololu Babatunde, who labored to take the name of a KKK leader off our building, which we now call Hurston. Please support her new plans as an artist:
When students see you on screen this fall, they need to see someone professorial, someone who has created a classroom space that feels organized and free of distractions.
🚨Help meeee!!🆘 You helped so much w my last geography emergency. Pls share favorite recent qualitative methods pieces for my grad/ugrad syllabus!! I didn’t teach this since 2017 & I am ⚡️excited ✨to teach it again! ❤️🔥 don’t be shy to promote yourself!
Doing a university-mandated training on harassment and diversity issues at UNC and honestly the dissonance is physically painful 😖 I can barely take it

Given all that has happened in 2022/last year/since my birth…I cannot believe I am lucky enough to be in proofs w/ some of my favorites❤️🔥. This article was honestly so hard & I learned so much & I’m really grateful for these people!! I’ll share more when it’s out.

For my grad research design class I ask grads to pick researcher role models who inspire them ethically, politically, intellectually. My idea is to help students not only be successful researchers & get funding but also align their ethical values & LOVE reading these so much ❤️🔥
Working on this special issue w beautiful people & in this journal meant more than I can say. I realized how much I thrive in community & the potential of prefiguring futures by trying to enact joy & love in our work. I’m so grateful. Read EVERY article! We wrote it for you. ❤️🔥❤️🔥
Issue 1 of 2024 on "Desirable Futures" is out, and mostly Open Access! As the editors' Intro states, the issue "offers a window into capacious desires & futurities, showing how to rethink relations of labor, land & life for just & desirable futures."
Chapel Hill has 1 of the “best” school districts in NC, & the THIRD biggest opportunity gap in the country. What role does racial capitalism & the university play in this structuring of unequal futures? Read

faculty plan to deliver a petition to UNC admin to demand amnesty for students who were suspended after last week’s pro-Palestinian protests. Faculty say several students have been banned from campus for up to two years. Over 750 people have signed the petition.
Y’all, I tried a new trick this semester & am so happy w it I wanna share: a collaborative notes document for students to create along as part of participation. I set up a sign up & template the first day of class & it runs itself. I LOVE how it turned out ❤️🔥 highly recommend! ❤️🔥
Fellow faculty, there’s nothing preventing you from checking in with your students now to see what they need from you this week. ❤️ Follow the leadership shown by our students.

Jenny Tone-Pah-Hote was a joy & a gift. I can’t believe she is gone. Jenny shows up to your baby shower with hand-beaded shoes. I’ve never known a more infectious laugh. She’s the kindest most radiant person I ever met. A devastating loss I am struggling to understand.

Something cool about me is I wrote a whole book about political geography yet every August I stare blankly at my first year seminar syllabus on political geography like who KNOWS what this is about!! How to organize the class! Wish there was a book for this!!! 💃🪩🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🪩💃
EVERYONE CONGRATULATE CHRIS NEUBERT!!!! 😊🥳☺️ He just defended his dissertation, "Queering Modern Agriculture: Enduring Crises and Optimistic Futures in Rural America,” but also I will miss him!! Even though he already left us for the senate budget committee 🥳🥳🥳
