Had a small, family only COVID wedding; scheduled an outdoor reception for last summer. A show kept getting rescheduled & finally overlapped w/ the reception… cancelled it. No show is worth it, but this one was traumatizing, full of abusers & the reason I quit acting. $750, iirc

This! I think her journey of expressing authentic emotion going from liability to main selling point is fascinating — but she’s also a conventionally attractive, thin, straight, cis woman, and that privilege affords her so much more freedom. (And I do also very much like her!)
I like Taylor Swift, but any feminist conversation or criticism of her work that doesn’t explicitly mention her whiteness is disingenuous and lacking intersectionality. She doesn’t represent or give voice to the angst or trauma of Black women or Black womanhood.

I had a case of COVID three weeks ago & have been slowly working on building up to exercising the way I did before (45 minutes a day of cardio usually).
I alternated walking & jogging for half an hour today & will be utterly useless the rest of the day.

This was the “musical of the day” for my middle school theatre students (the 2006 stage version that is) & they were all legit like “okay YES this music is GOOD” (because since they are fetuses many of them haven’t seen the movie 😳)
absolutely obsessed with the fact that Disney asked Phil Collins to write a few quick songs for the Tarzan soundtrack and he was just like "this will be my masterpiece. you ask for a soundtrack and I shall birth an opus. get me a stack of plates, I have a camp to trash."

Tbh it really reminded me of episodes of sitcoms like HIMYM or New Girl where they slapped a bad wig on a 30 something actor for a flashback and were like “see? Teenager”.
thoughts on Dear Evan Hansen trailer: Ben looks so old, that wig is terrible, they gave away they entire plot and showed the whole musical in 3 minutes, the only thing I care about is Julianne Moore and Amy Adams. also this is still an ableist, problematic, unethical musical 🙃

Also, good timing I guess-20 years ago today my childhood best friend died of something that he, by all accounts, should have survived. It really messed me up. Even the SLIGHTEST chance that a kid goes through that w/ a beloved teacher or friend makes it so not worth it.
Nobody seems to be talking about the mental health impact of kids going back to school and then seeing their teachers die.

(This is also a thing in theatre — very often, in my experience, the dysfunctional/often abusive behavior is treated like some kind of secret sauce to be protected, as opposed to what it actually is — the dynamic of a toxic workplace.)
A bad thing that often happens in Hollywood is that a director, showrunner, or entire company will have a chaotic, dysfunctional production that somehow results in a good finished product...& then draw the conclusion that the dysfunction was somehow responsible for the goodness.

Pleasant surprise—I was telling my conservative, Midwestern inlaws about a non binary friend who uses they/them pronouns.
My inlaws were initially confused, but *listened* & started working really hard to make sure they referred to this person w/ the right pronouns from then on.

My therapist is awesome but the thing that really made me like “…yep this is a good fit” is that she ended our 1st session with an unprompted but very nuanced take on the whole canned music in Here Lies Love situation. like… she GETS this industry; no extra explanation required
I tried a therapist in 2020 for industry burnout. It didn’t work out for other reasons, but she was also like, “I don’t know what Carmen Sandiego is. I don’t know what My Little Pony is. Oh, I think I heard of Star Trek”, and I know this is petty but it drove me a little insane

I can’t tell you how many times people have treated me like I don’t know what I’m doing b/c I’m teaching/directing 7-12 graders… no shade b/c they’re obviously good, but most “professional” directors I know wouldn’t last two seconds w/ (or know how to direct) students.
arts teachers at the k-12 level deserve as much respect as professional artists

Listen: consent work is so amazing even outside of performance. Husband loves dark thrillers, & I do not. It’s so meaningful that he asks if I’m in a good mental place to hear about the plot of x/a plot twist in y; he gets to share things he’s excited about & I get to feel safe.

I had a principal once who made it unequivocally clear that she had my back before, during, & after a meeting with a total bully of a parent; she was totally professional with the parent but never backed down/allowed any doubt re: my competence as a teacher. That NEVER happens.
