this is about mizore, a 3 year old seal who recently passed away after being transferred to a new aquarium for "breeding purposes." they kept him isolated from other seals in a small room in which he only swam in circles for 7 months until he stopped eating and died.

correction—mizore wasn't near breeding age. the average age would've been around 6-9, so it's more likely they only wanted him because he was popular and made for a good exhibit. zero efforts were made to socialise him with anyone. this was never about the breeding program.

by the way, otaru were contacted about this and (as far as I'm aware) have completely ignored it. the inquiry was sent in Japanese a few weeks ago and nothing came of it.

yeah, this makes sense. if we were going to get mizore's cause of death we would've gotten it around 2-3 weeks ago. this isn't the first time otaru have done this, and if mizore wasn't as popular as he was they'd be wiping their socials of his existence. genuinely appalling.

there is no proof as of now that she died horribly. just because an animal is from otaru does not automatically mean they were being abused. otarus care is inconsistent, and because of how long ago it was we have little information to go off of.

this is incredibly important—the keepers have little to no say in how the enclosures are kept or the breeding programs themselves, they try their hardest with what they're given and at otaru it just seems they aren't given much.
