I’ve composed and deleted this tweet a thousand times, but here goes: I’m gay. Those I’ve told so far have been wonderful, and for that I’m more grateful than they know. It feels freeing to be able to be my whole self, and I’m excited to find out what’s next. ☺️
I spoke to my grandma for the first time since she heard I was gay. She’s 86, Catholic, fiercely protective and we’ve always been very close. I was anxious but we spoke as if nothing had changed. Hung up and had a little cry – the first since coming out. Everyone knows now. ❤️
You'd expect me to say this, but I'll say it nonetheless: Andy Street's loss is terrible news for the West Midlands.
He's a deeply impressive politician, and crucially unafraid to stand up to his own party. We need more like him, not fewer.
I’ll never forget the relief when
@RishiSunak
announced furlough.
For us it meant 50+ people keeping their jobs as the pandemic took hold.
We need that ability to deliver again – that’s why I’m backing him to be our next PM. 🇬🇧
The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis.
That’s why I am standing to be Leader of the Conservative Party and your next Prime Minister.
I want to fix our economy, unite our Party and deliver for our country.
So... I have a boyfriend, it seems. He’s utterly lovely (but not on Twitter, would you believe). If you’d told me a few months ago how my life was going to change I’d have laughed you out of the door, but I’ve never been happier or more myself.
This is a disgraceful speech and does not reflect the views of the modern Conservative Party I know and love.
If Suella thinks this will endear her to the membership, I fear (in fact I know) she is mistaken.
Suella Braverman’s speech in Washington this evening contains a blistering attack on pro-LGBT Tories.
She says the pride (progress) flag has been flown on govt buildings as if marking “occupied territory”, accusing Tory colleagues of supporting a “horrible political campaign”
Gosh, what a response. That wasn’t the intention – I just wanted to say what was true – but literally every reply has been positive. So much kindness; I’m sorry to those I’ve missed thanking, but know that I do!

The President is to be commended for the clarity of purpose of his statement on Afghanistan and his action. The Taliban must know the world is watching its actions. We are concerned about reports regarding the Taliban’s brutal treatment of all Afghans, especially women and girls.
Bit late to the “dating a Tory” discourse.
My partner’s Labour. He challenges me all the time and has influenced my thinking in lots of ways.
The real division is between thinking your opponents are wrong and believing that they’re evil.
The latter never got anyone very far.
Delighted to have been selected as
@Conservatives
candidate for Manchester Central in the General Election. 💙
#Manchester
is one of Britain's great cities - and Labour have taken it for granted for too long. 🏙️🥀
Looking forward to hitting the campaign trail! 🗳️
I've had to come out a few more times this week with returning to work from holiday, and people literally couldn't have reacted better (including some I didn't expect). I am extraordinarily lucky.
Seeing lots of members of my Party on here lashing out at everything the Labour Party does.
This is what happens when we lose. Our job now is to look at ourselves and identify how we win power again.
Nothing makes me prouder than hearing "of course we're voting for you - you're the only ones we ever see!"
Here all year round - not just at election time. 💙
Also listened to
@TomTugendhat
on
@mattforde
’s podcast. Hesitated before writing it down as it was said off the cuff, but this resonated and stayed with me as a point of light in a very dark week.
Told my mum I'd been dating for the first time after the end of my last (straight) relationship. Her only responses were, first: "with a man?" then "see, I was right all along!"
Have come to see my Gran. She (89 and Catholic) has watched
#Strictly
for years. The advert for the Christmas special came on and she volunteered to me how “beautiful” John and Johannes were this year. That’s why it matters. ❤️🏳️🌈
🔵MANCHESTER CENTRAL (Con target 217): Scott Smith picked as Conservative candidate. Interesting he's the 22nd LGBT+ Conservatives group member picked as new candidate, reflecting similar trend within Labour, though not all LGBT+ group members are necessarily LGBT+ themselves.
Some ✨personal news ✨from me!
Beyond excited to have been appointed
@LancashireCC
's Lead Member for Highways and Active Travel.
Surprised and honoured in equal measure to be asked - and can't wait to play my part in making LCC's exciting vision for
#Lancashire
a reality.
One last thing for now: I’m aware that far too many people don’t have as (relatively) easy a time of coming out as I have. I’d love to know of any charities looking for support/volunteers to change that or help those who’re struggling – please send suggestions.
Honoured to have been elected Leader of
@ValleyTories
this evening. 💙
We will stand up for residents from Haslingden to Healey Corner: working with
@LabRossendale
where we can, and holding them to account where they fall short. 🗣️
Now to work! 💪
Thrilled to have been re-elected with an increased majority to represent
#Facit
and
#Shawforth
on

Am having a bit of a
@thegriefcast
binge at the moment. In Griefcast
@ladycariad
has created a really special space that makes you realise how little we talk about death and grief, how crippling that can be, but also how easy it is to change: one step at a time.
Now settling down to watch a show which showed me that maybe – just maybe – things could be fine if I was true to myself. And fine they are. Thanks,
@danjlevy
. ❤️
I found out this week that my dad died. He had been unwell for many years, and wasn’t a big part of our lives for most of them, but he was still my dad. Here’s a picture my mum took of the Black Watch memorial near our house – he retired as an officer in 1996 due to ill health.
💙 Nominations are in and I’m officially the
@ValleyTories
candidate for my little corner of the world again.
☀️ As you may have noticed, I’m out and about all year round - but I’m looking forward to the short campaign in better weather!
Thrilled to be selected as the Conservative candidate for Irwell ward on
@RossendaleBC
.
Lots done in nearly 12 months on
@LancashireCC
, but lots more to do.
Looking forward to the campaign!
What a gorgeous day to visit Wales for the first time. Though Caernarfon can’t seem to decide whether it’s a sleepy Spanish village or Welsh seaside town. 🏴 🌊 ☀️

1992, the Conservative party won the general election, allowing John Major to continue as Prime Minister. His party received the highest number of votes ever seen in the history of British general elections: around 14.1million.
@CommonsLibrary
There is no version of events in which Sarah Everard can be held responsible for whatever has happened to her. We need to stop excusing men for their behaviour.
I am the
@Conservatives
candidate for Manchester Central in the General Election on 4 July.
Promoted by Jamie Hoyle on behalf of Scott Smith, both of B36.01, 9 Owen Street, Manchester, M15 4UF.
One thing I have always been truly awful at is just chilling out and accepting things as they are. Recently I’ve been giving it my best shot and... I think it’s working? Time will tell.🤞
Since 2009 (and that Julius Caesar haircut) I have: left school, done two degrees, started and left a PhD, got a job I love, got married, ended said marriage (amicably), come out, and gotten a boyfriend. Though I wouldn’t change a thing: some quiet in the 20s, please.
This week my bf pitched the idea of baking a cake (his first bake!!!) as a “team building” exercise. Happy to report that the cake and the relationship made it out alive.
Deeply irresponsible from the WHO if this pans out.
To be clear: "being a hairdresser" and "drinking hot drinks" currently sit in higher risk categories than WHO are proposing for aspartame.
That won't be reflected in the headlines.
Thrilled to have the backing of
@LGBTCons
in my campaign to be Manchester Central's next MP. 💙
I love Manchester and it has a bright future 🚀 - but Labour have taken it for granted for too long. 🥀
A huge congratulations to long-standing member of
@LGBTCons
@scottdismith
who was selected as the
@Conservatives
candidate for Manchester Central. A great candidate.
Scott is the 22nd member to be standing as a new candidate this year. Well done Scott, we are so happy for you.
Feeling more pleased with myself than I really ought to for having the laundry done already, and therefore not having to do the Monday morning creep downstairs half-naked to fish out some work clothes.
First run in way longer than a year. Planned a 5k but went out way too fast and ended up more like 2.5. Quite chuffed with a pace of 6’05” for having been away from it for so long, though!
So it’s
#NationalComingOutDay
. This is the year in which I came out: I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in the response I received and my experiences since. Far too many are less fortunate. If you can, support charities like
@aktcharity
. They literally save lives.
Here Diane suggests that support for
#LGBT
+ rights is incompatible with support for rural communities.
As a Conservative I’ve no stake in Labour infighting – but the brilliant, open, accepting people I meet in
#Lancashire
every day would soon set her straight. 🏳️🌈
@francesbarber13
Come to a surgery: 2nd Saturday of the month (except August) at the Town Hall. No appointment needed
My cousin is a trans man. I presume he has a cervix. I haven't asked - it's none of my business
My business is to love him & protect him from bullying.
You are better than this 🏳️⚧️
Talked about it a bit already but seeing it on the website makes it all a bit more real!
Honoured to be trusted to lead the opposition on
@RossendaleBC
- and to work towards turning Rossendale Council blue again. 💙💪
Mum's friend, over for a drink: "I've never been able to watch Nigella"
Me, trying not to say 'camp': "she's so over the top, I love it"
Mum: "it's because he's gay, Fran"
Read between the lines here and you find a politician who just doesn't have what it takes to see a plan through.
Such a sad downgrade for the West Midlands.
Our ambitious plans for transport need to be delivered in the right way, which means working with real figures, with actual funding, realistic timescales and not making promises that simply can’t be kept.
Thank you to everyone who voted for me in Manchester Central. 💙
I'll always be proud to have stood to represent one of the world's great cities in Parliament. 🚀🇬🇧

So far I have: gotten a (this) double decker train, embarrassed myself ordering a hot dog in German, and arrived at our hostel to find a drag queen singing karaoke. First impressions of Vienna are good. 🇦🇹
