I want to counteract the low visibility of the systemic issue of power abuse and sexual misconduct. I offer my personal perspective here: and highlight 3 areas for action as an attempt at starting the conversation 📢
Ever since I consider myself part of the Labour economics community, my goal was to one day be affiliated with IZA or (dream big) work there one day. This was amplified with Simon Jäger taking office and the opening of the Berlin office. These news are dreamcrushing.
I think someone needs to sit down with Deutsche Post Foundation and explain to them pretty carefully what this implies - I am honestly speechless 😶 WTF!?
„the Berlin location of IZA will be closed down.“
„the current CEO of IZA, Simon Jäger, has decided to depart from his leadership role at IZA“
„Armin Falk, the current CEO of the briq Institute, will take over the leadership of IZA.“
I am happy to announce that our paper „Causal Misperceptions of the Part-Time Pay Gap“ co-authored with

This clear stance from so many senior researchers was long overdue and feels like we might at last take something positive away after all this….. thank you to all the initiators!!!

An open letter from 436 Fellows of IZA to the Deutsche Post Foundation + the Rectorate of the University of Bonn objecting to the appointment of Armin Falk as IZA's head. If the appointment stands, all 436 Fellows will resign from IZA on 1 Jan 2024

@iza_bonn
(fellows and employees) pls do this in an organized way - I am calling for the next generation that has not given up hope for change! If you want to add a call from PhD students let us know!
Is anyone organizing any letter directed to IZA to let them know how let down we feel about this decision? I'd be happy to sign that, and end my affiliation with IZA if there is no satisfying response from IZA.

The paramount concern should be the protection and respect for all individuals, a principle currently not sufficiently being upheld. Everyone should begin reflecting on the small changes they can make in their interactions and behavior, starting now..📢
- Providing career guidance to aid victims in transitioning, and transitional supervision for PhD students
- Facilitating resolution within the university through mediation services
- Formal/legal pursuit of the case (victims should not have to do this themselves)
1. Assistance for Victims after an Incident:
- Immediate financial support for victims if needed (e.g., if a victim has to leave work position as a consequence of the experience) through emergency funds
- Ensuring access to psychological counseling beyond university services
“I have always thought of myself as a detective! The detective always believes there is a way of finding the answer and that is the way I have always done research.”

- Seek external consultation to develop effective strategies
- Implement institutionalised learning, e.g. by mandatory workshops under the title “What constitutes a ‘toxic’ work environment?”, “How to be an active bystander/ally
- Demonstrate credibility as an ally. For example through simply stating it at the beginning of the semester in each course where you face students that don’t know you yet
- Ensure people in all positions know where to turn to when being approached about this topic

- Enlist unbiased third parties and legal expertise to make decisions (naturally, these legal external investigators should have experience in sexual misconduct cases and should form a credible and safe address also for the victim to feel comfortable talking to.)
2. Prevention & Institutionalization through Clear Communication & Education:
- Ensure accountability through a code of conduct
- Reduce dependencies to single persons
- Establish connections between equal opportunity officers/ombudspersons and set higher standards for them
- Costs (independent legal expertise should structure these)
- e.g. “Hard costs”, cutting funds for employees, up to termination; disciplinary procedures for civil servants + “Reputation costs”, exclusion from associations if a person has ben found guilty in an investigation
