Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed Mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken; 🎭❤️😭
At some point, we are going to have to actually talk about childcare. Just you know - folks are still working from home with their kids and it's still impossible.
I teach about forced sterilization every year. Every year my students suspect that it's still happening & that we just don't know all of the places where it's happening. Abolish ICE.
Question: what is the most ridiculous thing that you have done due to that lingering imposter syndrome?
I'll go first: googling words that I've used literally *hundreds* of times to make sure I'm using them properly.
Oh me - just wiping away happy tears - just found out I'm tenured y'all. Tenured - After a *very* long slog (w/ some situations that were classically and epically bad). I'm so grateful and lucky and thankful for my people - friends, colleagues, & family.
oh wait wait - one more
#BlackintheIvory
story that I don't mind telling - Having students say that I am pushing "my own little theory" or "my own agenda" in evals b/c I teach that early hominins first evolved in Africa
@clhubes
i think she's right - it takes a while to build and before you know it, the kids moved on to another stage. it will give him more time to enjoy it
We simply do not say this kind of thing about other (rd: not Black women) athletes. Absolutely no one was concerned with Michael Phelps running away w/Gold medals for like 4 Olympic games.
"But there also may be a fear that Biles is so good that she might run away with any competition she enters simply by doing a handful of moves that her rivals cannot, or dare not, attempt."
My white friends never report randomly being asked “is his dad around? Is he in the picture?” by school administrators, doctors, etc. I’ve been asked several times & in diff places. The assumptions folks make about Black mothers are exhausting.
In the past 48hrs, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings.
On average, across any 48hrs, we also lose…
500 to Medical errors
300 to the Flu
250 to Suicide
200 to Car Accidents
40 to Homicide via Handgun
Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.
trying not to think too hard about how much support academics of past generations had & how that withered away as more women and minoritized scholars entered the academy
For quiet and introverted folks (maybe everyone?) - teaching has just a touch of performance art - especially teaching very large lectures. You gotta bring that energy, set the vibe - hydrate, caffeinate, and get good sleep b/c it's a lot.
One of the hard aspects of being a Black faculty member is constantly losing friends and community because your university can’t hold onto its BIPOC folks. I had a whole crew at UCR - we are scattered all over the country now. And the cycle repeats itself 😢💔
Rather than shaming folks’ for asking for honoraria (even if they are at elite institutions), we should probably begin with the idea that our labor should be properly compensated. Taking time to write & give a talk as a researcher/expert/professor is labor.
I want to just remind all grad students that lots of paper comments/edits from mentors/advisors are an act of love and an expression confidence in your work and ideas. It's hard to open a document & see all that - but that's a sure sign that we think the work is worth it.
So our cat is terminally ill. He’s been with me and my husband for 12 years - through every academic move - across the country 2.5 times. Kids, apartments, houses, never ending winters, never ending summers. He’s a good cat 😭
Remembering my dad, Allen Nelson, who died 15 years ago today - at 61 of multiple myeloma due to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam - He spent much of his adult life working as a peace activist in the US and Japan. I honor his memory today ❤️
Maybe I’m low key kinda happy we’re having a public discussion abt what boundaries are and are not - it’s exposing how control and ownership are central to so many men’s ideas about love and relationships
The rage I feel towards myself when I re-read a manuscript and at the end of the sentence I've written "(Citation)" Bitch. no. what are you thinking? Where did you get this? what was that article? why didn't you just take the time to cite it? 🙄
I have written countless syllabi over the years, but putting together a "pandemic flexible in-person appropriate but make-it-online w/ease" syllabus with the very thin bandwidth I have left?? It's a doozy.
Friends. This is called the mental load. Played for laughs here - but truly, one partner cannot carry all this. It’s too often women/mothers. It’s always too much.
Pro Tip: Find at least 1-2 friends who are on the same wavelength as you re: COVID and have similar risk factors. It helps maintain sanity despite the "all is well" gaslighting coming from every direction.
True story: My husband & I know that if a baby ever has to come in - he/she goes to his class. White dude holding his baby = awesome! look at that great dad. Me with my baby = unprofessional, disorganized, distracted. And we know black profs cannot afford any more hits.
Two married colleagues each brought their son to a lecture because daycare closed last-minute. This was mentioned in both of their student evaluations. Try to guess which prof was called "unprofessional" and which was described as "a great parent".

Doubtful that I will ever see a woman president in my lifetime. Not because Warren was a perfect candidate - but because every candidate has major issues but only men are given a pass on their imperfections.
Fell asleep for 2 hours after getting the first dose of the Moderna vaccine - can't tell whether it's a side effect or just the let down after a year of stress and sadness (seriously).
My anxiety abt. sending my kids to school w/out mask mandates is getting to me so badly. Woke up 3x last night. Got a supportive email from a school board member - cried a little. Check on your parents of school-aged kids - we are NOT alright.
Not to put too fine a point on this...but
(1) yes- the gender inequity is glaring
(2) this is colonial redux of imperial exploration/exploitation (“the world is ours”)
(3) this was not a marketing mistake. This was a choice.
A geneticist at Harvard Medical School is working on a dating app that matches users based on their DNA. The goal: to eliminate all genetic diseases. 60 Minutes reports, tonight.

I’m just saying - flying with a baby is stressful and hard. So most times when folks are traveling with a baby it’s because that’s the best way to get where they need to go. So they must do it.
The risk of COVID-19 exposure onboard an aircraft is “virtually non-existent,” according to a new study by Boeing, United Airlines and the Department of Defense.
Notes on a theme: IRB approval is *much* harder than getting a gun in many states. Why? B/c you might do harm w/your irresponsible poorly thought out unethical research. Read that back: MIGHT DO HARM. smh.
Reading that "advice" about moving on after experiencing abusive situations in grad school has me so upset - none of us "move on" - we swallow the razors & do the best we can. And it never ends at grad school - esp if you are URM scholar. I can't.
@emilypawley
i always read it as they are just taking a few moments to get the bearings before class starts - lights off is mellow; lights on = class is starting.
I cannot connect (mentally, intellectually) w/online conferences. I know the online options improve accessibility - so I'm not knocking them overall - But I simply cannot do family life, working life, service life, research life, and conference life while conferencing
Been thinking about
@edyong209
's reporting during this pandemic - and I will just say this: you never know when you will be called upon to use your talent & gifts to truly serve the public. Thankful for all his writing & interviews. Give him all the things.
"Florida State University also hit a five-year high, losing 136 faculty to resignation last year."
It definitely feels like this is happening. And it'll get worse, as the job cycle catches up.
Your science/research isn’t more objective simply because you ignore the biases/framing/context that shaped your data collection & analyses. Think about it this way: you’re simply ignoring potential confounding variables.
This is right about when all my semester faculty friends start talking about how they "made it" and "it's my last lecture" - and I want you to know that I hate you.
Having a new baby is so hard y'all. I would be furious if someone implied that I was on vacation or sabbatical during maternity leave. Those first 6-8 weeks?! I have never done anything harder around the clock non-stop with no breaks for as long.
Gen X and Boomers need to change their mindset about ppl working in the office. It’s a wrap. You’re outnumbered by a population 40 and under. The WiFi and internet works. Nobody cares about what industries are affected. If they downsize they can pay those who stay on more
@TheBaddestMitch
my kid is the same age as Blue Ivy and that 8-11 jump is RIDIC - like kid land to tween land in a heartbeat. It's taking a lot to get used to it
So is this when I mention that a SCU Campus Security officer had a thin blue line flag visibly posted behind him at a diversity forum for undergrads? This is recent - after the blatant profiling of a black faculty member’s brother on campus.

On a personal note... Forks Up y’all!!!

I’m starting to think things may actually end up okay.
Just a friendly reminder: If your BIPOC (academic) colleagues do not follow your same (fluid & sometimes lax) cultural conventions (around dress, language, formality, etc.) - it's not b/c they aren't savvy as you - it's b/c the rules and standards are diff. for us
6 yr old: Mama, why is the movie called Jurassic World when there are all kinds of dinosaurs from different periods in the movie?
** even my 6 year old knows this was a mistake **
I'm really honored to recognized in this way - means quite a lot to me. Thank you to Section H of the

At some point, I'm gonna need newsrooms (
@nprpolitics
,
@CNNPolitics
,
@washingtonpost
,
@nytimes
, etc.) to do a deep dive into voter suppression. Not a passing mention - but give it the energy you've given reporting on the motivations of Trump supporters for the past 2 years.
Yes - very tough. My 8 yr old asked me to stop explaining it to him because he was getting scared. Kept asking repeatedly “so the man is dead?? He’s really just dead? They killed him?” Please don’t ask for peace. Black kids never know peace 💔
Well my 8yr old finally asked whats going on and I tried to explain things for an 8yr old. Then he said, "daddy are we going back to being slaves?" This has been a tough week.
If masks were necessary for our survival as a species we would have evolved one by now. We haven’t. We have noses and mouths. We have airways. It is not natural for people to go around with face masks on in their general life. And no amount of govt propaganda can change that.
The world is burning & I have a 3 yr. old. Someone send help/chocolate/alcohol/sedatives/a babysitter/a night out/someone to convince her to use the potty/appropriate vaccine distribution/*anything*
Had to tell my mom she was giving me unhealthy advice today. She took a breath and finally agreed. We don’t have to do it the way they did. We can choose more for ourselves.
The expected immediacy of email kills me. I need (sometimes take) days to think about things. I actually need the time to think. there is so little time to think.
4 Black women BioAnthros bump into each other at the bar 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 (when I tell you how absolutely impossible this was even a few years ago...) Rachel Watkins, Jada Benn Torres, me & Evonne Turner-Byfield ❤️
I want so much more for Women of Color in academe. May your work be respected, your grants be funded, your impact appreciated, your labor noted, and your pay reflect this effort.
Can I give you one more

story? Faculty hdbk says all TT faculty can sit in on t&p deliberation mtgs. A woman ahead of me goes up. I rd. her file, & wait for the dept. mtg. I realize they had it without me. They say “they forgot to invite me.” Dept has 6 people.
Had to insert myself in a conversation btw a store employee (who was escalating) and 2 teens (who were not escalating) b/c she was abt call the cops on them for selling candy out front. Black kids are still kids. Now I’m tired & my nerves are shot.
All you need to know about what is wrong with Green Book is the fact that Ali is a supporting actor nominee and Viggo is the lead actor nominee

Listen listen listen - I’m far too soft for this 😭😭😭. To not be the only? To give praise to the effort that it takes to get there? The generosity of spirit? *liquid is seeping from my eyes*
I know I'm old b/c I do not get the need to go out to bars right now. I'll make a cocktail at home, put on some music and I'm good. I fundamentally do not get it.
A tale as old as time. People have told me directly I got a job b/c I'm Black. Didn't you know y'all? That's why so the professoriate has so many Black folks 🙃
Today, a man looked me dead in my eyes and told me “My job prospects as a white MAN are much lower than yours as a black GIRL because there’s so few of you. It’s a real problem.”
So my darling cat had to be put down tonight - and I had to explain to our human kiddo why our first baby wouldn’t be coming home from the vet 😥😥 just the worst - grief compounded.
My dad - a vietnam vet - wouldn't let us own toy guns as kids. Then camo became the look in the mid 90's & I was barely allowed to get 1 baby tee - b/c he knew war wasn't a game & guns were not toys. I didn't get it entirely then - I get it now. We shouldn't be living like this.
Told my anime loving son that I didn't realize One Piece and One Punch Man were diff. shows...he gasped and said "Are paleontology and anthropology different Mom? This is how you sound"
Please take care of yourselves. No one is going to give you space to do less, to take things more slowly, or to prioritize your mental & physical health. Just take your time and energy back~
