Many applicants who think they want a clinical PhD would be as happy, or even happier, with a Master’s degree in social work or counseling. Faster, higher acceptance rates, and a job market at the end. Do the research before you apply!
Did you know that it is harder to get into clinical psych grad school (Ph.D) than any other graduate program? More than med school, law school, or even vet school!
Only 8% acceptance rate nationally!
This site is chock full of info on getting in:
Nothing better than having your 11yo come home from summer camp, ask if you’ve ever used a z-score, show you a new interface for creating a correlational heat map, and present a final presentation with pre-reg and accumulated data and integrative reflections… nerd camp FTW.
Today, I put on real clothes, packed my work bag, and walked to campus. To do work. For the first time since March 9th. 214 days.
And god, it felt good.
Soooooooo proud of Dr. Brandes! You manage to make a defense fun.
An incredibly rich and dense dissertation filled w tons of data, complex models, and multiple constructs, all wrapped up in an elegantly simple package. A thing of beauty. ❤️

Looking for clinical psychologists interested in improving our science by promoting transparency, openness, replicability, and credibility! Starting a database to coordinate these efforts - please encourage clinical folks to sign up & please RT!
The most exciting part of the Clinical Psychological Science planning phase has been assembling the associate editorial team. I am BEYOND thrilled to introduce you to the amazing folks who will be joining me in bringing in the next phase of CPS in January 2021!! Let’s do this..
As the editor of
#AMPPS
, I have written directly to
@PsychScience
leadership asking for the society to request Dr. Fiedler's immediate resignation. This editorial behavior is unacceptable. Elevating reviews to commentaries without additional peer review?/
Fourth grader’s Chromebook breaks on DAY 4 so he’s in my office doing his PE on my old laptop so the 1st graders can concentrate on reading downstairs and somehow my pandemic work life just keeps getting better and better..
Intro to the OS special section of J Abnormal, wherein
@JMill_er
and I say: enough is enough. Clinical psych needs to pull its collective head out of the sand and start doing serious science, the right way.

Thrilled to announce the FIRST Open Science Advisory Committee for Clinical Psych Science - w thanks to
@PsychScience
and Amy Drew for supporting it. Starting in January 2021, CPS will be advancing OS initiatives with the help of
@DrAndreaHoward
@SolomonKurz
and
@tessmsneal

For those who thought/think that clinical psychology and psychiatry are outside of the replication crisis and less plagued with problematic research practices and the allure of compelling narratives over research integrity... wake up. Seriously.
December - aka the month where everyone is submitting their manuscripts and no one is willing to review. Looking for a last-minute Holiday gift for an editor you love?
I have many friends who are AEs and EICs at journals across psychology and other social sciences. Regular reports of manuscripts sitting 3-5 months before triage, 15+ review requests sent to get a single (or even NO) reviews, huge delays in getting R&R resubmissions..
I instituted several changes to the submission portal at Clinical Psych Science which serve to advance the primary missions of the journal. One of these relates to our commitment to elevating diversity and representation in our topics, our authors, our scientific practice. 1/7
Pumped to announce our special issue of J Res Personality entirely devoted to Registered Reports! Send new ideas for how we can promote the RR mechanism in ind diff research, outside-the-box thinking encouraged! w

Our second pre-registered Paper-in-a-Day became our first pandemic PiaD. Complete with Zoom, lots of coffee, and my children remote learning in the background.
Delighted that
@JnfrLTackett
has contributed a guest post to my blog on the PaperInADay (PiaD) approach to getting stuff written.
@kateewatkins
: this is the approach I think we should use for Athena SWAN submission!
Maybe not our normal celebration dinner, but we're toasting

1st-author Clinical Psych Science acceptance with joint Zoom sushi and making the best of it! Pandemic achievements still deserve celebration, don't forget!

What are we doing, psychology? Bleeding our women out?
“These drops may suggest that in these fields, a culture of gender bias is more widespread than in the others,” the study says.
When you have a grant due in 48 hours and back-to-back meetings at the lab and of course the kids are out of school.. stock up on snacks at TJs, hook up the switch in the conference room, and hope for the best.
@GabriellePfund
“We fully agree with the reviewer’s suggestion. The recommended text/analysis can be found on p. # of the revised manuscript.”
Kinda sounds like you changed something but technically still accurate even when you didn’t?
I’m often envious that we don’t have one grand, unifying, overarching society for all of clinical psychology bringing our discipline together for collaboration, community, and discourse. You know, like the social and developmental psychologists have.
Yeah.
I'm thrilled to be part of the launch of a new Editorial Fellows program
@PsychScience
!! As editor-in-chief of Clinical Psychological Science, we'll be bringing two editorial fellows on board and interested scholars at any stage are encouraged to apply!
was just invited by an ECR to a potential collaboration who noted that they found "the courage" to connect after receiving my review on a recent manuscript, which was signed. How's that for benefits of openness/transparency? So cool!!
I‘m still recovering from post

Happy to be working on a Friday night if it means the first focus group for Clinical Psych Science in the books. SO EXCITED to get feedback from the field on how they see the journal and where we should go next. Breaking down barriers and shaping OUR science, collaboratively!!
It blows my mind how productive my grad students have been through all of this pandemic craziness.. and now we try creative approaches to the 1st author pub celebration dinner... SO proud of

Couldn't sleep last night because summer camp enrollment was this morning at 8am. Refreshing the site minutes before to register, but got in. 8:08am and all the camps were completely full. June 2021 will be the first time I have had proper childcare since March 2020. In shock.
My Christmas tree crashed over, ornaments breaking, in the middle of my faculty meeting, sounding very much like someone was breaking into my house. Apparently I was unmuted to all my colleagues as I ran through my house yelling, so… how’s your day going? 😳

I still remember meeting Scott for the first time, as a 1st year graduate student at SRP. I was in such awe of this brilliant scholar, and couldn't believe how warm, kind, and generous he was on top of that! Such an enormous loss for clinical science.
It is with great sadness that I share the news that Scott Lilienfeld passed away last night. His wife Candice asked that I share the news with his professional community. The field has lost a giant, & more importantly, for many, a kind & thoughtful friend. My heart is heavy.

One of the best things I did over the last few years was team up with these two to dissect the differences and similarities between construct validation and computational modeling contributions to theory creation. We started from a place of disagreement:
A cognitive, a social, and a clinical psychologist walked into a bar two years ago and started talking about theory. You’ll never believe what happened then!
@JnfrLTackett
, Mark Schaller, and I wrote this paper:
A mini thread (1/5):
Within psychology, I've thought a lot about the myth of the "solitary genius" as I feel it's played a large role in our replication crisis - when we deny science as a collaborative effort and overcredit individuals for scientific findings, we promote this fallacy
A sunny morning w coffee and casual email, about to go for a long walk w my partner before back-to-back meetings that will run until 7pm on a Friday night and I am still flummoxed that the flexibility we have on the days and hours we do our work is now a toxic aspect of academia.
Special Issue Call: Bridge-building, innovating, interdisciplinary clinical scientists! Open to empirical and perspectives contributions. April 1 deadline. We are looking for true scientific cross-talk w

There are times it seems surreal to be in a glass house in the middle of the 20-degree woods, in an ice storm, celebrating my birthday.
Then the power goes out and you realize you’re in a glass house in an ice storm and it’s 20 degrees outside. 🤔

Sending out review requests right now makes me feel like the biggest Scrooge ever. Thank goodness for fireplace TV.

Got to hang out out with our 1st yr grad students today. Out of 18 students, across all areas of psych, > 2/3 have already written a preregistration. They haven't completed a year of grad school! WHOA!
Which made me wonder, what's that proportion for faculty across the field?

I look forward to the corrected version featuring the woman of color as the center of the narrative, being the person with the original idea and all. This type of journalistic bias - in 2021, or ever - is despicable.
The incoming editorial team of Clinical Psychological Science aims to expand the conversation about how our outlets are serving us, now and in the future, by holding focus groups to discuss - particularly hoping to bring new voices to these conversations!
Yesterday I watched my grandmother’s memorial service on Zoom after canceling my family’s travel plans last minute.
People should be able to grieve with their families but we all have choices to make and I believe these choices matter now as much as ever.
Cancelled my Christmas party this weekend at the last minute out of an abundance of caution.
At least one would-be guest has tested positive today. One superspreader event avoided.
Sharing because it can feel like your actions don’t matter. But they do.
On the drive to Georgia armed with 175pp narrative text and 255pp tables for our APA self-study and can someone please explain to me WTH clinical psych is doing?
The system is broken. Resource allocation is so misaligned with improving clinical science and outcomes.

I'm sure not all editorial hopes and dreams will be this easily fulfilled, but.. Table and Figure limits at CPS have been increased for all submission types, effective immediately. Thanks,

I’m sure you’ve got bigger things to address/consider but can you please consider increasing permitted # of tables/figures. 4 is a very small # for a 12,000 word ms.

Wrapped up the fifth focus group for Clinical Psych Science and am SOLD on the mechanism as a way to generate broader discussion around our journals and our science. THANK YOU to everyone who participated. I'll tweet more comprehensive thoughts once I've had a chance to reflect.
Me, on the walk home w the kids: Today was such a long packed day of work. I'm exhausted. But it's so great to see you guys at the end of it, my bright lights at the end of the day
