High Cardinality is a hot topic in Time Series Databases. Most solutions deal with this issue by dropping labels. - At the time of Instrumentation - Or before ingesting to the database. This is like reducing the number of sensors or using a 480p camera in self-driving Cars. 🧵

What I hate about writing software is the latency in shipping something 'Done'. When I sketch, a weekend is enough to roll out an Idea. The tools and skills are ready and just waiting for the idea. But the support structure software needs to be consumable is insane.

An iconic thing happened yesterday at @last9io . Until a quarter ago, our alerting engine was marred by customer-facing bugs. So much so that the number of interruptions led to an internal SIGHUP tracker. Mainly for that team. Yesterday, the team was finally dissolved. 🌊

When you ask the Engineering team to *define* Reliability instead of the Product or Customer-Success teams, you only get the Inside view of the system. Modern systems don't go down. They degrade. Mainly a fraction of workflows, impacting a narrow set of Users or Usecases.

Why do people even build microservices. When they have to overprovision everything anyway and all of them talk to the same databases, there is barely any technical advantage. Only purpose could be sociological; keep colliding teams apart.

I have crossed this immigration counter hundreds of times in Singapore. All I ever saw was advertisements for enterprise grade problems. Mostly from Dell, IBM, and SAP. It’s the first time I am looking at Observability being mainstream. Software Observability’s time has come.
