@Bulkington__ Outdoor smoking is my biggest complaint about Europe. Nice out cafe? Great, I think! Then table next pull out smokes and ruins dinner. Train station? Also forever dodging. Going in a shop? Hold breath 30s. And still clothes smell.

Why do we let engines be loud? Personal vehicles - cars and motorcycles - have no reason to be loud, especially in cities. Enabling one person to intrude on the peace of thousands is ridiculous. Why cater to rude behavior?

@upzone_CA @stan_okl and we had 2008 as a warning for oil. We could have rebuilt our infra in 15 years, from cars and fossil fuels to transit, bikes, solar, wind, new grid, and fiber internet. And new, efficient multi family housing.

I keep hearing people say “I want a house in the burbs where it’s quiet”. Cities have street sweepers and garbage trucks. Suburbs have leaf blowers and lawn mowers.

Just a quick update on car-free life in Frankfurt, over two weeks in: 1) It's great 2) I wanted a 15-min life here. I failed. I got a 5-min life, with so much nearby I have many places yet to visit. - 5 min to grocery (pleasant) - 3-4 min to organic grocer (must cross arterial)

...of driving density, but also of speed, and of drunk-driving, all combined. If you zoom in, you see that people die all the time where lots of people drive fast. This includes highways & arterials. But you also see very few die on neighborhood and city-center (slow) streets.

Why do we have street parking at all? For all other private property, we have private storage. Why can't everybody park down the block in a public garage, and simply walk to their car when needed? Sure, have loading zones for when you haul something or load up for a trip.

@VickieforNYC "Normal people". That's quite some framing there! 3/4 in NYC don't own cars, yet it's crammed with traffic. Normal in NYC is using transit, walking, and biking. Under 16? No car for you. Old, infirm? Nope, no car. Not wealthy? Nope, no car. City councilor? By all means!

Maybe the mistake wasn't letting all the workers flee to the suburbs, but in enabling them to drive back in. Why DID, and why DO, cities cater to people who do not actually live in the city? Why does DC let VA drivers clog their roads? Why does NYC let drivers in from NJ?

Simple note from observation in Europe: If you put stop lights at street level before the crosswalk, and don't have right-on-red, drivers don't crowd the crosswalk. You can back them to whatever point you want, and it mostly works.

While in Frankfurt for two weeks, I got a transit card. Paid about $50 for a two-week pass which covered U (subway), S (commuter train), & bus for the municipal area. I didn't even have to think about hassling with fare machines or the cost of a trip. This is infrastructure.

Since everybody is all worked up about 737 plane failures, it's worth pointing out a few reminder facts: - Plane deaths per 10B passenger miles: 0.2 - Car deaths per 10B passenger miles: 150 That's a ratio of 750, folks. 1/

Pay $500 per month in perpetuity to save a one-time <$100 delivery fee? How many such rationalizations don't stand up to scrutiny? Surely most could go car-lite, even if their lives had routine needs for trips like this. Most trips don't require carrying large packages.

Meeting with similarly behaved people, rarely, in a home is a modest risk. For young people, it's probably reasonable?

Unfortunate truth: We can never build enough roads to satisfy low-congestion demands in a car-only design -- it simply doesn't scale -- so if we put off making streets better & safer in favor of building more lanes to address urgent traffic needs, we will never have either.
