Whenever they tell you a change is impossible, show them Utrecht.
An urban freeway with many lanes can become a green park with a beautiful canal. Instead of a car sewer, the water flows.
What will happen if we’ll RETHINK our street corners?
We'll realize that until now, we've made them too car-centric. Street corners are designed for fast driving, which means pedestrians have to risk their safety just to cross the street.
Smart city has nothing to do with artificial intelligence or sensors.
A city is smart when children can walk and cycle freely and safely. Technology is only a bonus.
One of the greatest achievements of the car industry is convincing business owners that parking spaces lead to more revenue.

I see people sharing Apple's new 'Mother Nature' video, where they rave about their sustainability and claim their offices are carbon-neutral.
I'm just here to remind you that this is their GIANT private car parking garage.
What is incredible about this vid from Paris, except the efficiency of the Bicycle and the sheer amount of people moving, is the silence. The sound pollution of cars is often overlooked, but it's very important to the quality of life.

Amsterdam opened this week the world's first underwater bicycle facility. There is room for 7,000 bike. This is an engineering masterpiece.

More info:
Amsterdam will remove 1,500 parking spots a year until 2025. 11,200 in total. Bicycle parking, sidewalks, and green will replace them.
Take a moment and imagine your city with 11k less parking spaces. Have a nice weekend!
Check out this brand new masterpiece in Norway 🇳🇴 🚲
It's Europe's longest bicycle tunnel, which reduces cycling time to Bergen from 40 to 10 minutes.
Excellent cycling facilities are the way to get more people on bikes and leave their cars behind.
25 seconds from Zwolle, NL. Population 125,000. It’s so quiet. We’ve forgotten how loud cars make our cities. Wonderful to hear the sound of bicycles, people chatting & laughing 🎶

In a historic turn of events, cyclists now outnumber motorists on the streets of London!
🚲Since 1999, the number of cyclists has increased by a staggering 386%
🚗The number of motorists has declined by 64%.
Same street, six years apart. Parking became a park, grey became green.
Just imagine what it is like to open your house door and see this.

Whenever they tell you that bike infrastructure is too expensive or complicated, share with them these images. A 300m-long tactical bike lane was built tonight in the city center. It took 194 minutes in total. Good morning!💪
This image of the Dutch prime minister shows what the Bicycle is all about: easily and safely biking to work, while nonchalantly eating an apple. That's what millions of Dutch people do daily, regardless their social class or income. 🚲

Made a visit to Cologne/Köln, Germany. Here are my thoughts.
In short: if this is how a leading city plans for bicycles in the EU's largest economy, then we are in big trouble.
More in detail, below.

Utrecht, the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands, releases its city center vision for 2040: a place to stay, meet, safely walk and cycle. What don't you see in the image?
A little bit of green can make a big change.
Observe the contrast on the same street when measuring the temperature. The asphalt road registered a high of 33 °C, while the newly installed semi-hardened parking lots showed a considerably lower temperature of 21 °C.
Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. Then, why do we spend 100 times more attention on electric cars? Why do we speak more on Elon Musk than bicycle manufacturers?
What happens to a car that wakes up one day and wants to be a bike?
I wrote a children's book about this. It will be released in a couple of months. Would you like a copy? Leave your details and I'll get back to you!

It has finally happened!
The Rotterdam metro Line B has a new station, Hoek van Holland Beach. Starting this week, Rotterdammers can use public transport to go swimming, surfing, and relaxing at the beach.
This busy street could easly host two or three driving lanes and one parking lane. But Amsterdam decided to go for another layout. It’s lively, geeen, and healthy.
Don't blame having a child for the need to buy a car.
Blame your city leaders for making it impossible to cycle safely with children.

IKEA in the Netherlands has been doing this for years with regular cargo bikes. I've delivered my entire interior in Groningen using these bikes.

Same space, different impacts.
This satellite view of the area near Eindhoven's main train station illustrates a stark reality. The bicycle lot accommodates hundreds of people, while the car park, of approximately the same size, serves only 50 cars.
Utrecht adds green roofs to its bus stops: improves the city's biodiversity, helps with storage of rainwater, and helps with cooling in the summertime. Let's make public transport even greener!

I hear often people wanting to leave the city because it's not green enough. Or because it's too noisy and dirty.
But the solution isn't leaving the city. The solution is getting rid of the cause of the problem: too much space is given to cars.
Look, it's possible!
It takes real leadership to realize that one made a mistake but an even better leadership to try to make things right.
Utrecht shows leadership.

What do you prefer in front of your house?
- Option 1: a car
- Option 2: a modular parklet allowing neighbors to sit, meet and play

I’ve been hopping on trams, the metro & busses, and I have to say that Milan’s public transit system is great. Traveling in the city center is seamless and affordable, and that’s really how a good transit system should work.
Every time that I'm in Antwerp, I want to speak with shop owners to explain to them how much business they lose for not having on-street parking. I guess they are just bad entrepreneurs...
The Dutch national bike sharing scheme is the best I know.
At any train station, one can pick a bike with their national transit card. Here's the station in the Hague 🚲
Some cities use Photoshop - Rotterdam makes it real. The transformation of a dull street corner into a green pocket park in Rotterdam is a great example of how beautiful our cities can be.
