It’s not representative of the experience of the majority. Courses were not standardised any more than medicine but quality assurance is underway with GMC regulation approaching.

According to the lecturer who taught physiology on my particular PA course, physiology comprised about 25% of the academic studies and we were tested in it. He also teaches medics and says we covered almost the same, enough for clinical decision making.

Thank you for clearing that up, but it was worth asking being as number of years training appears to be such an issue. PAs receive an appropriate length of training for their role. They are not training to be doctors.

You’re overlooking the fact that the majority of PA students have at least a 2.2 (usually higher as entry is competitive) BSc as mature students. Many have years of NHS experience too.

4/ This year 700 qualified medical students did not get jobs. That is the failure of the system. There are several wider issues crippling health care. Existence of PAs are not the cause of this. But we provide a convenient scapegoat for dissatisfied DRs and patients to attack.

Computer yes/no checklist is an NHS 111 call handler. If PAs are acting like that then your practice is underutilising university trained professionals.

Newly qualified PAs often do a preceptorship year, working at equivalent to band 6/7 in General Practice. There was no objective evidence for the statement about their salaries (it was a guess) nor that they were working beyond their scope. They were let down by the company.

Adam’s opinion is wholly ungeneralisable. Many if not most PA courses have a vast focus on physiology, anatomy, immunology etc. though content has previously been shown to vary prior to QA by GMC.

Exactly. They push AMR as much as the rest of us and I wouldn’t question their knowledge of pharmacology. I’m sure this is a helpful move to reduce the burden in primary care. I have always valued input from our clinical pharmacists
