In 1992, a Boeing 727 landed at Chicago's Meigs Field for its transfer to the Museum of Science and Industry. Boeing had a specified minimum landing distance for the 727 at 4,800'. Meigs field was only 3900'. Now for an aircraft that would never fly again, you go full Navy.

Also worth noting the 16kt crosswind off the lake, the windy city never made it easy. With 1000' less runway than "required" and a 16kt crosswind, I'd say these pilots did a marvelous job slamming this aircraft down and getting it stopped.

@bafasbender Yes, there was a lot of work done to it to be able to hang it from the ceiling. One of the wings removed all the hydraulics pulled gear assemblies pulled and repainted.

@Pro_Nuke From what I've read that's exactly the situation. Flew from O'Hare to Meigs under a 10-minute flight. WIth minimum fuel, 40 degrees of flaps, and a naval-esq landing it's impressive what the 27 can do.

@DougCarlisle Oh for sure. I've seen videos of 27s landing under 4k ft, min fuel 40 degrees, and planting it. Piece of cake, the 727 was a unit.

@Factschaser Most of the time when an airbag doesn't deploy in a crash it's not because it was supposed to, it's because it wasn't supposed to. Sometimes an airbag in the wrong place at the wrong time will do more damage to occupants then if they all deployed in any crash.

After ejecting a "drogue gun" fires a pyrotechnic which extracts the drogue chute which in turn extracts the main chute from the pilot's chute bag. The drogue and chute bag then cut their connection after the main chute deploys.

@Space_Strategy Despite SLS being a ridiculous spiral of out-of-control spending and continually slipping deadlines I gotta give SLS this one. Superheavy is unproven, SLS is flight-proven and crew-rated. Until Superheavy is crew rated its the best we got.

@avgeekmason @wxrjm @thenewarea51 From a tower visit to KARR. You can probably give the tower at MKC a call on bad weather *weekday* and they'd be more than happy to flash some light guns. Training usually occurs on weekdays, and the new guys don't get much practice with them.

Very interesting to see SpaceX testing reentry on IFT4 *with* heat shield tiles missing. This is likely to test Starship's ability to reenter with missing tiles and push the limits of its operational envelope in a reentry profile. Definitely gonna get HOT in those spots.

@CSI_Starbase Yup, CRS-1. At T+ 79 seconds, the fuel dome above the #1 engine ruptured and caused a failure of the #1 engine fairing. Still made a nominal orbit insertion and the mission was successful, just a little longer burn for the other 8 engines.

I'm so done with the Chicago, I mean talk about a total flop on almost every CAM and global model. What happened? . It's always a rain/snow line and we spend 3 days debating if it's gonna be 20 miles south or 20 miles north and it's always north.

@chan_lambda @SpoxSpace So while the thrust puck and Octaweb are mounted symmetrical, the engines are offset on the outside of each part of the Octaweb to allow enough clearance for the gas generator between each engine.

Honestly, this was one of the hardest engineering courses I have taken in the last 4 years. It's the reason I missed so many great airshows and haven't been posting a lot of original content. This email almost brought me to tears. So worth it, and I learned so much.

Our 1st tornado of the year occurred yesterday near Henry IL. Our survey team found damage to trees and outbuildings. The tornado also overturned a semi on Hwy 18 east of Henry. For more info:
