Wreckage of the Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan that went missing Thursday has been found with no survivors among the nine passengers and one pilot onboard, a Coast Guard official confirms. Lt. Cmdr. Ben McIntyre-Coble with the rescue coordination center in Juneau said the Coast Guard received an alert notice of an overdue plane on Thursday and said radar data showed that around that same time, the plane experienced “some kind of event that caused rapid loss in elevation and speed.” According to United States Coast Guard, the wreckage of the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX was found on sea ice in the Norton Sound approximately 34 miles (54.7 km) SE of Nome, Alaska. NTSB said there are nine officials on their way to Nome to assist in the investigation. They will be analyzing the last moments of the flight to determine what exactly caused the rapid descent of the aircraft.

A Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan with 10 people on board has gone missing during a flight in Alaska, according to local and state officials. The plane, operated by Bering Air, was en route from Unalakleet to Nome, both cities in western Alaska separated by the Norton Sound inlet, according to the Alaska State Troopers. The state police agency was notified at 4 p.m. Thursday of “an overdue aircraft” that had gone missing with nine passengers and a pilot on board, it said in a dispatch message shared on its website. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook it was conducting active ground searches from Nome and White Mountain, but was limited on air searches due to poor weather and visibility. The US Coast Guard and US Air Force have stepped in to help, with flights planned to scope out the area and try to locate the missing aircraft, the department said. “The plane’s exact location is still unknown. We continue to expand search efforts to as many avenues as possible until the plane is located,” the fire department wrote. It urged the public not to form their own search parties due to the weather and safety concerns.

NTSB investigators also recovered the airplane's enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS), which could also contain flight data. Both components will be sent to the NTSB Vehicle Recorders Laboratory in Washington, DC for evaluation.
