Lots went wrong this season, but all the major mistakes were made in the offseason. Whoever eval’d Shapen over GB was wrong. Whoever decided they didn’t need another CB or WR was wrong.

What we learned against ISU was that Grimes was gonna script 12 pass plays against the defense he’s expecting.
So OSU just broke all their tendencies and isn’t running man at all. And Baylor just has absolutely nothing for it.

This is straight out of the Dave Aranda approach to coverages / run fits. Stout DL to allow additional men in coverage, rely in hybrid types on the edges (JACK / STAR) to muddy the reads on where the open space will be post snap.
Coverage should be thought of like geometry. It’s a division of space among men in coverage. The more men, the less space they need to worry about and the quicker they can react to what’s happening within theirs. Davis means more men in coverage. More men, more success.

This is exactly what Art Briles did with his son who was 29 and coaching WRs for Baylor at an astronomical rate. Somehow the previous AD was just totally cool with this.
The key to effective nepotism in coaching is make your child a position coach (not QB or o-line where people notice) but somehow also the second highest paid public employee in your state, behind yourself.
