This is a common teaching in evangelicalism that has absolutely no basis in fact. From Hebrew Scripture to the N.T., care for the poor is described in communal terms. Entire nations are judged by it.
The same religious leaders who told me as a teenager that premarital sex was a grave sin that would ruin my life forever have declared that no one can fault a 17-year-old boy for a little attempted rape.
Jesus never told women to "cover up." Instead he told the MEN, if YOUR EYE" (not "their outfit" or "their proximity") causes you to stumble, consider gouging it out before violating a woman. Matt 18:9
Seems more likely to me that Kavanaugh was so drunk he doesn't remember the assault than that the lady who passed the polygraph conspired in 2012 with a therapist to fake an assault to take down a potential SC nominee in the event that Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election.
Good grief. It's not that he uses "salty language." It's that he uses "salty language" while denigrating people of color and bragging about sexually assaulting women. If you act like "shit" and "pussy" are the problem, not racism and misogyny, you're deflecting.
Stacey Abrams graduated with honors from Spelman, got her law degree from Yale, served as deputy city attorney in Atlanta and as a leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. Trump (reality TV star) says she’s “not at all qualified.” Don’t pretend this isn’t racism.
The Bible is trending because it was just used to justify ripping babies from their mothers’ arms and putting them in interment camps. Christians have a name for this: blasphemy.
If you can give the presidency to a serial adulterer & strip club owner who peddles porn & brags about sexually assaulting women, but can’t give a cake to a gay couple, your “stand” isn’t about sexual ethics; it’s about discriminatory animus toward LGBT people.
I signed all their damn purity pledges at 14, 15, never knowing they'd gladly sell me to the highest bidder for a judge on the Supreme Court or a senator to vote for tax reform. 😡
Funny how the logic of victim-blaming is so rarely applied to men. No one's saying, "Well if he didn't want to be accused of sexual assault, he shouldn't have been at so many drunken parties."
#walkupnotout
asks students to take responsibility for the mental health of their classmates, suggesting that school shootings are *their fault* for not being "nicer." It's victim-blaming. Stop it.
It’s so strange & infuriating that the party that once touted “freedom” is backing a president who wants to force people, under threat of treason, to stand for the national anthem, applaud during his speeches, and report only favorable stories about him.
GOP: We can't ruin a man's reputation based on accusations alone.
The rest of us: Okay, cool. Let's do a thorough investigation then. Maybe talk to some witnesses, like the other guy who was in the room. Gather evidence, etc.
GOP: NO INVESTIGATION! WE CONFIRM TOMORROW!
No, it’s not. Abraham doubted. Job doubted. Peter doubted. Martha doubted. Even Jesus cried out, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” Condemning people who are thoughtful about their faith, who doubt & who wrestle & who cry out with questions, is legalism from the pit of hell.
We have no business calling this a Christian nation when it would turn away toddler Jesus when his family sought asylum, fire preacher Jesus when he spoke of justice for the poor, and execute brown & unarmed Jesus when he was perceived to be a threat.
What gets me is, the NRA doesn’t just buy politicians; if a lawmaker even *considers* the most modest & sensible gun legislation (like making it legal for the CDC to study gun violence trends), the NRA donates MILLIONS to their opponent. It’s profoundly corrupt.
In case you think the Bible is irrelevant: The Book of Esther features a rich, bumbling, & misogynistic king with a fragile ego who relies his racist advisors to tell him what to do. He is ultimately bested by an orphan girl & some eunuchs.

“I was hungry and you did not feed me. I was a stranger and you did not welcome me in. I was a child and you separated me from my mother and put me into ‘foster care or whatever.’” - Jesus
When folks say they want to arm teachers, what they’re saying is they accept that regular shootouts should be part of the routine for schoolchildren. We don’t have to accept that. I won’t accept that.
The people for whom I feel the most rage this morning are the black women who, BY DESIGN, waited an extra 3 or 4 hours at the polls to vote for Stacey Abrams while 60%+ of white women coasted in and out of their polling place to support the man who arranged it that way.
Mistreating immigrants & refugees is anti-Christ.
Objectifying & demeaning women is anti-Christ.
Racism is anti-Christ.
Lying is anti-Christ.
Greed is anti-Christ.
Self-aggrandizement is anti-Christ.
And all the empty, pandering holiday greetings in the world can’t change that.
People are proud to be saying Merry Christmas again. I am proud to have led the charge against the assault of our cherished and beautiful phrase. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Hey Christian authors, you can spare me the private messages of support if you're not going to stick your neck out and oppose the racism, misogyny, and corruption of this administration publicly yourself.
There is a terrible cruelty to it. Baptizing them as children, teaching them in Sunday school, hosting lock-ins & game nights in youth group, encouraging their calls to ministry, and then, when they work up the courage to tell the truth about their sexuality, kicking them out.
V-Day Single: "I am missing out on so much joy."
V-Day, Dating: *stresses out over finding the perfect gift*
V-Day Married: "We should probably, like, go out or something."
V-Day Married w/ Kids: "You need how many valentines? For people who can't even read yet? By when?"
To every student who walked out today, thank you. You're not just doing this for yourselves; you're doing this for my two-year-old kid. I told him that today.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Under Obama, the abortion rate hit a 40-year low. Addressing healthcare & poverty, making contraception affordable & supporting mothers, does so much more than casting a vote that is merely symbolic.
2/2 I voted for Bush twice (sorry, everyone) because I believed voting Republican would end abortion. It didn’t and it won’t. Don’t let the GOP hold you hostage over abortion, especially when it requires supporting abusive men.
There are 3, maybe 4, Bible verses that address same-sex activity, and those are debatable. By contrast,
there are HUNDREDS that call for justice & mercy for “strangers” -immigrants & refugees. Evangelicals need to stop claiming biblical fidelity as a distinctive when it’s not.
Pew asked Americans if the U.S. had a responsibility to accept refugees.
No group -- racial, by age, religious or political -- was less supportive of that idea than white evangelical Protestants.
Hey evangelicals: All those people you warned me about? Those liberals? Those democrats? Those Mainline Protestants? They're the ones saying that truth matters, that some things are right and some things are wrong. While you argue that the political ends justify immoral means.
I think maybe we’ve spent too much time trying to convince people who will never be outraged to be outraged when we should spend that time convincing people who just might vote to vote.
If you had told me yesterday that the kids caught on tape making tomahawk gestures and jeering at a Native elder would today be treated as national heroes w/ invitations to the White House & Today Show, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m still that naive.
Mike Pence is just as dishonest, unethical, racist, misogynistic, and dangerous as Donald Trump. Because standing there with a Bible tucked under your arm while someone lies and abuses power and makes racist & sexist comments and enacts inhumane policies is called *complicity.*
Idolatry is forcing people to show unquestioned devotion to a symbol of nationalism made of cloth while desecrating the very image of God when it appears in immigrants, refugees, women, Black protestors, LGBTQ people, and those with disabilities.
Trump: "I don't ask God for forgiveness... I don't bring God into that picture."
Evangelicals: "We can never know the man's heart."
Obama: "Christ calls me to ask God for forgiveness for the times that I’ve fallen short.”
Evangelicals: "The man's a secret Muslim."
Picked up some fundie hate-follows this week so let me make a few things clear: I embrace LGBTQ people just as they are. The best preachers I know are women. Donald Trump is a liar & racist. Being a disciple of Jesus requires solidarity w/ the marginalized. Not changing my mind.
Vote blue. Up and down the ballot. Vote for imperfect democrats. Because if there are no political consequences to the bald-faced lying, race-bating, voter suppression, and conspiratorial antisemitism embraced by the GOP, it will keep happening.
Trump has shown that you can brag about groping women & peeping on teenage girls & still be elected president. He has shown that a woman who talks about her sexual assault will not only be disbelieved, but openly mocked. But yeah, tell me about how scary these times are for men.
A busy friend just brought us a huge meal & was super apologetic because it’s been 3 weeks since the baby arrived. We’d planned on eating granola bars for dinner. Good reminder that your “better late than never” may be someone else’s perfect timing. ❤️
They always said "the world" would not understand our sexual ethic because "the darkness cannot comprehend the light." Maybe the world just doesn't get a sexual ethic in which being gay is a sin but chronic infidelity, sexual assault, & "pussy-grabbing" are just guys being guys.
We’re now a family of four! Welcomed our little girl yesterday, just after the Royal Wedding. (Did not name her Meghan or Harry.) Everyone’s doing great. Thanks for cheering us on these last few weeks. Your turn,
@lkoturner
!
The whole point of waving a rebel flag, or slapping a “COEXIST” bumper sticker on your car, or wearing a MAGA hat is to send a message about who you are & what you believe. It’s inane to pretend these expressions are neutral and to demand people make no assumptions based on them.
Bad logic & bad theology. The notion that God can be “removed” from anywhere is a contradiction to God’s omnipresence and the notion that God is petty enough to slaughter schoolkids because the government doesn’t force Jewish kids to pray Christian prayers is offensive.
They may claim Christianity, but anyone who says of migrant children, “they aren’t America so we don’t owe them anything” or “it’s not like they’re our people” is not a disciple of Jesus.
Many American Christians (especially those from anabaptist traditions like Mennonites) do not pledge/stand because of religious conviction. Should they be forced to do so? Told to leave the country if they don’t? Or is forced homage to the Empire reserved for minorities?
JUST IN: President Trump tells Fox & Friends that he thinks NFL players should "have to stand proudly" for the national anthem, and suggests that they "shouldn't be in the country" if they do not stand.
Hey,
@GOP
, since you’re supporting Roy Moore’s candidacy financially, I’d like to know if you agree with him that America would be better off if I (a woman) couldn’t vote, if African Americans couldn’t vote, & if preserving slavery was left to states to decide.
It's not the Donald Trumps of this world that give us history's worst atrocities. It's the Mike Pences. It's the Bob Corkers & the Kirstjen Nielsens & the regular citizens who normalize evil by shrugging their shoulders, doing their jobs, and going on like it's business-as-usual.
Imagine what James Dobson, Jerry Falwell & company would say about a woman president who was married three times, bragged about her many affairs, appeared on the cover of Playboy, & paid hush money to a porn star with whom she cheated.
Thread: For everyone saying we should consider “they’re not human; they’re animals” in context: The CONTEXT is an administration that routinely uses dehumanizing language to describe immigrants. The CONTEXT is crowds booing at the mention of Hispanics at Trump rallies..
I used to think an n-word tape would be the end for him. Now I’m certain it won’t. Republicans and white evangelicals will shrug it off as a little “rough talk” and the people who use that word with caution will be emboldened to use it with impunity. This is the pattern.
I'm sorry, but nobody on this earth is "trash." Not a single person is disposable. We are surrounded by beloved children of God, each one worthy of love & belonging. You can draw boundaries, friends, without declaring someone garbage.
An entire generation of (white) evangelical boys is observing as infidelity, porn, sexual assault, the objectification of women, “pussy grabbing,” & “locker room talk” is normalized as typical masculine behavior. Yet hardly a peep of objection from the “biblical manhood” folks.
When a US president holds a “rally” in the middle of his term wherein he lies 23 times, praises a foreign adversary, mumbles incoherently about Elton John, makes a racist comment about a senator taking a DNA test followed by a rape joke WE DON’T DEBATE THE MERITS OF A DNA TEST!
God doesn't see slavery & the genocide of indigenous people as regrettable footnotes in an otherwise glistening history. I believe God was *with* the slaves. God walked *with* the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears. What America did to the least of these, America did to Jesus.
In every case, "wives submit to your husbands" appears in the same context as "slaves obey your masters." And yet I'm constantly told we need to consider context & culture with the latter but not the former...
White folks, when are we going to stop saying "racism has no place in America" and acknowledge it's been sitting at the head of the table from the beginning and we've yet to kick out the chair?
Saying that the New Testament is a celebration of Caesar and the Roman Empire is like saying the Lord of the Rings is a loving tribute to Sauron. The biblical illiteracy is astounding. But I suppose when you've got Caesar's autograph on your Bible...
I understand that Christians might disagree on precisely how to apply the (HUNDREDS of) biblical directives to welcome immigrants & strangers. I don't understand how turning away refugees, deporting Dreamers, breaking up families, & sending people back to persecution are options.
The Religious Liberty Task Force exists because many white evangelicals have confused sharing the public square with oppression and encountering disagreement with persecution.
Trump praises Kim Jong Un and wishes Americans were as compliant to their leader as North Koreans: "He is the strong head. Don't let anyone think anything different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same."
Louis CK. Roy Moore. Harvey Weinstein. Donald Trump. This is not about liberal vs. conservative / Hollywood vs. religion. It's a culture-wide epidemic.
Jerry Falwell Jr.’s contemptuous dismissal of the teachings of Jesus, and his insistence that our first allegiance is to Rome, is not the theology of the crucified Christ; it’s the theology that crucified Christ. “We have no king but Caesar.”
Deeply concerned about the conditions in which these migrant children are being held, but they could be sleeping in Dinseyland and it would still be abusive if they’ve been needlessly, traumatically, & indefinitely separated from their parents.
In other news, my nearly three year old has yet to grasp the concept of Santa, but is instead convinced that all unexpected gifts come from
@DollyParton
(thanks to the Imagination Library). Not gonna jump at correcting that.
This is like a local police department creating a new policy that every woman caught speeding will have her children taken from her and put in concentration camps, and when faced with backlash they shrug their shoulders and say, “What can we do? It’s the law. Romans 13.”
It's baffling to me that people think that instead of making it harder for a troubled teenager with a history of violence to get his hands on an AR-15, we should just tell students to "be nice" and hope he doesn't shoot them. Good grief.
Grieving the loss of a church, or your place in it, can be as painful as grieving the loss of a loved one. Sending love and prayers to all who are grieving that loss today. I'm so sorry.
