I’ve been an NHS Consultant Surgeon for less than 5yrs. Today I settled a £28k tax bill on my theoretical future pension. I’m 23 years from retirement but already planning an earlier exit. Thanks @gdcuk @jack_needham for expert advice, and @goldstone_tony for leading the way.

How can I stop GPs from addressing letters to my dad? He’s a retired biotechnologist who lives in the Malvern Hills and enjoys gardening and ringing the church bells. He really doesn’t want to see the complex ears of Manchester.

2023 brought some career high points, though strangely it didn’t feel like it at the time. I felt embarrassed, guilty, and compelled to remain silent about my own successes. Let’s change this mindset, and celebrate our own and each others wins, however small, in 2024 🎉

Today I emailed a long-retired ENT surgeon on his old University email address. He doesn't know me, he worked in a different region and had retired before I started ENT training. So I wasn't expecting a reply. He replied within 17 minutes. TBC (hopefully)

The people who've told me I'm too nice or too quiet to be a surgeon, and who've told me surgery is not a job for somebody's mother, have all been politely ignored. You don't have to be an arrogant male stereotype to be successful. Diversity strengthens teams. #killthestereotype

@RCSnews @thetimes @mortensen_neil If you want this to work, you need to make it safe for women to report bullying, harassment and assault. These people don’t politely stop when you report them. Rather, they escalate their efforts to humiliate and harm the person they’ve already humiliated and harmed.

Not only is it possible to be a surgeon with a family and a life beyond work, I’d say these things are essential. They build our strength and resilience, and help us through stressful times. Embracing life outwith our surgical careers actually makes us better, stronger surgeons.

@morefluids Started medical school 1995 CCT 2016 Substantive consultant 2018 Some people sneer and scoff, but whilst research / maternity leave / LTFTT / sub specialist fellowship training may have ‘held me back’ by 6 years, they’ve also made me a better doctor, surgeon and trainer.

Husband has broken his favourite mug and no others match up in terms of size and feel. He’s emailed Rae Dunn who don’t make it any more. Does anyone have one of these lurking in a cupboard that they’d be willing to part with? You’d make a 50yo tea-drinking man very happy.

So pleased for all the successful MRCS candidates 🎉 I’ve just been invited to be an MRCS examiner. What advice would you give me? How can I be a good one?

Interviewing my 9yo over breakfast: - Why do you want this job? - I want to help people - How much should we pay you? - Hmm let me think about that - If someone was poorly and needed an operation, would you do it? - You'd have to train me first. And I'll need a child size mask

So proud of my fantastically talented trainee James McGregor, ENT educational fellow at @MFT_MRI who won first prize at today’s annual History of ENT Society. Well done James 🎉

I always read the @bmj_latest obituaries. Today was the first time a friend has featured. And a photo I took of him! Past President of @ENT_UK and #ENTScotland amongst many other achievements. RIP Alan Gibb, 101 years is not a bad innings. 🥰

Having trusted people in your life is essential. Family. Friends. Lovers. Having interests outside work is also essential. Getting pregnant is not essential. If you do, fine. If you don’t, also fine. Women should not be judged on their desire or ability to make new people #iwd

@BellaRoscetti It’s such a joke. I’m repeatedly informed that I lack confidence and resilience. Would I really have made it this far if I lacked confidence and resilience? No. What people are really saying is that you need to behave like a stereotype to fit in. And I say, codswallop to that.
