Even in the education system, kids want to help each other on tests and exams so that the collective succeeds. And teachers literally beat it out of them. They even segregate the “smart” kids from the other kids with AP classes, this prevents other kids from getting peer help

It’s asking for the kid to make a group of 10 so that future addition is easier: we take 2 from outside the box and place it in the box, this completes a group of 10. We then have 7 left over—10+7 is 17. Some kids have trouble understanding 8+9 but find 7+10 much easier.
