Emergency Managers are struggling.
'I'm being laughed at, I'm fighting a battle that's lost.'
The government's preparations for a pandemic were 'hollowed out' by austerity, emergency planning expert Lucy Easthope tells
@mrjamesob
.
Listen to the whole Full Disclosure episode:
I know there’s a lot going on right now, and this is not important in the grand scheme of things, but for the first time since 4 March, I am NOT on call!
It’s worse than that, because the poor handling of COVID has seen seeds of distrust. Imagine trying to bring in another lockdown while we’re still angry about partygate. The next pandemic is way more terrifying.
You see, if avian flu *does* kick off, how prepared will the UK be?
And what lessons have we learnt *that we have implemented* that will put the UK in a better place to counter pandemic avian flu than we were to counter Covid-19.

📑👀Cover of the Illegal Migration Bill says:
“I am unable to make a statement that, in my view, the provisions of the Illegal Migration Bill are compatible with the Convention rights, but the Government nevertheless wishes the House to proceed with the Bill.” 👇

. This particular shot has never been taken before. Taken at almost 3 miles above NYC in a 🚁 with the doors open. The pilot had to be on Oxygen to legally and safely pilot the aircraft. This is the result of a highly planned and coordinated photo shoot.
Seeing ‘the public’ as a) homogeneous and 2) needing “rescue” - leads to a sausage factory of emergency management which doesn’t embrace and empower the skills within communities

I didn’t know much (anything!) until super recently, and it’s not something I’m directly impacted by either, but huge thanks to

I subscribed to that for a while, I remember a 'how to' article on creating your own Buffalo shoes by gluing together 6 pairs of flip flops, VB said something like, "yeah, or you could just buy stilettos Geri" 😂

UK contingent, would anybody be interested in my (numerous) thoughts on the National Risk Register and COVID? I’m feeling a blog brewing.
This is an excellent and important read.
One observation, from experience over the last 3.5 years; not only is the road to recovery non-linear, it’s far more turbulent than this line shows and unique to every person affected.
The path to recovery from the pandemic won't be linear and people will experience a range of emotions at different phases.
So what's needed for successful recovery? We spoke to people involved in disaster recovery around the world to find out:

Sun Valley High School students in North Carolina were startled when their teachers locked doors, turned off lights, and told them to hide. Police were in the halls. Fearing the worst, they sent panicked goodbyes to their parents. But it was just a “spontaneous lockdown drill.”
This is NOT it. A terrible operational decision and doubling down with even worse comms.
