Amy Winehouse passed away on this day 9 years ago, so I finally made a thread of my favorite performances and deep cuts, mostly from her early career. I think some people know about young Amy Winehouse but a lot of people really don’t??? I love her so much ok (THREAD!!!!!!)
now I can’t stop thinking about the person who gets to be her therapist. imagine slogging through 45 minute sessions with random people and then getting to have a session with her
it is crazy that sixpence none the richer came up with one of the most beautiful chord progressions of all time in Kiss Me and nobody ever used it again because if they did it would just sound like Kiss Me
Like she was a real fucking jazz singer, I need to make that clear!! Don’t get it twisted!! She revered the greats like Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Donny Hathaway.
In her earliest gigs, she sang with just her and her guitar, jazz chords and all. This is the first known performance of her song “Best Friends, Right?” which was released posthumously on Lioness.
She did a lot of very casual promo performances for ‘Frank’ that proved her vocal chops in the very beginning. To the best of my knowledge she is literally 20 years old here, singing in some random grassy knoll. Queen of grass.
She came alive in front of a band, she was really unlike any other when she was in that zone. Here is ‘You Sent Me Flying’ at New Pop Jazz Festival (I highly recommend this full 40 minute performance on YouTube).
She was also very funny, both on stage and off. This is the first known (to my knowledge) performanced of ‘Addicted’ years before it came out on Back to Black where she explains the song to the audience and then heckles the sound guy. (This is the full vid it literally cuts off)
There is a lot of intimate footage of her throughout several documentaries taken by her friends early on in her career, and she’s so funny in many of these. People really forget that you’re still a person when you get famous.
YOU GUYS I JUST REALIZED THAT DESPITE KNOWING EVERYTHING ABOUT HER TODAY ISNT THE ANNIVERSARY IM SO SORRY. I’m leaving up the thread because it’s already circulating but she passed on July 23rd. Her BIRTHDAY is the 14th but of September skdksksks oh my god. I’m canceled
To be honest, I am a scholar primarily on Amy Winehouse’s early career. It’s hard to watch some of the footage from later in her career, but I would be remiss if I left some of these out. Here is her cover of “Don’t Go To Strangers” with Paul Weller where she tbh steals the show.
As you can probably tell, I could go on and on forever on different videos and facts about her, but I’m going to leave it here. She is my favorite musician of all time, and the media dehumanized and mocked her until she was gone. RIP Amy ❤️
hey so it’s still the case that it is rude and embarrassing to say the r word in 2024 or any year and an astounding amount of you continue to willfully miss the memo
Also here she is in a rehearsal literally sitting on the floor, singing your fave under the table. Some music critics for her first tour said she couldn’t sing. Imagine having bad taste.

She did go but her dad kept her performing anyway and she was really unhappy for a number of years! She was clean (other than alcohol) until the day she died. Want to dispel the rumors ❤️
@dudeimnormal
i am obsessed with it while also recognizing it is infused with the same exact drug that Say So was infused with 4 years ago. so actually im normal
ultimately i do not have it in me to care if my vintage kitchenware has lead in it and so i have decided to protect myself from lead exposure with my mind
im deciding to weigh in on mask discourse by saying regardless of the fault of public health messaging/the trap of individual responsibility, i will personally think you are an absolute lib if you don’t wear a mask in grocery stores/public transit/doctor’s office etc.
yesterday i was talking about how i love princess diana and my dad was like “i thought you were doing more of an amy winehouse marilyn monroe uma thurman thing” and first of all why did he know that?? and second of all why would he specifically exclude princess diana
