My friend Ashley was v brave to give me permission to share her experience, which is one of the most shocking, appalling stories I have ever heard. For those of you suggesting that a 15 week abortion ban is somehow a reasonable or safe compromise, (long 🧵)
The medical expenses from this experience totaled >30k. The loss of the baby was inevitable, but the lengthy hospital stay, emergency surgery, and trauma did not have to happen.”
It was also preventable with appropriate medical care. It was scary knowing that his rights surpassed my own, and I might get sick, suffer future infertility, or even die because of the barbaric laws in place.
I was blessed with a wonderful maternal fetal medicine specialist and a lovely set of nurses. Seeing the looks on their faces, as they were forced to provide inadequate care to me because of the laws in place, still haunts me.
I was really fortunate that I did not get sepsis or die. My fertility status is still in question. I will try again soon, but I am honestly still recovering. I left bruised, physically and emotionally, and immediately went back into trauma therapy.
I had to have an emergency D+C (awake but in twilight) to remove it around 12am Christmas morning. The procedure took 3x as long as a routine d+C because of how clotted the placenta was. This was all traumatic, frightening, and painful.
In the past, they would have administered the medication in pill or iv to assist me to deliver the nonviable fetus in hours. This would have been a short hospitalization with low complication risk and low cost. Now, that is prohibited.
cervix and the baby’s foot in my vagina. I was admitted to the hospital. The baby was not viable yet based on being only 20 wks. They were unable to help me with medication to speed or ease the delivery, as AZ laws deemed that to be illegal medical abortion.
So I was to stay at the hospital and wait until either his heart stopped or I got serious infection. The waters were in my vagina along with his feet so the risk of infection and sepsis was very high.
I would have to travel like that, with him in my vagina, and hope I did not partially deliver him on a plane or in a car. We were lucky that his heart stopped on its own Christmas Eve, and I could be given the appropriate medications.
I delivered him within hours. Unfortunately the placenta was not delivered easily. My blood pressure was plummeting for over 12 hours and <80/50 on average. the placenta had clotted to my uterine lining.
please read how my friend was treated worse than an animal in an AZ hospital bc of the 15 wk ban: “I went into preterm labor Friday Dec. 22, 2023. I was at my routine 20 wk anatomy scan when we very clearly saw an open
Only if he had no heart tones or my life was threatened were we allowed to proceed with medical intervention. They also said this could take days or weeks and scheduled me a D+C in Las Vegas a week out, just in case.
Arizonans may as well skip tomorrow’s season premiere of

, we have our very own low budg remake going on right now down at the state capitol. 💔

My daughter lost her twin brother and under
#sb1457
could lose her mother to incarceration as a result of that loss? Cool. How very pro-life”.
#handsoffaz
The abortion care was by far the safest part of my high risk pregnancy and birth. What was unsafe was having to travel to another state in a pandemic in order to access it, and the unnecessary trauma that resulted from that.
#SB1164
By the time we learned about our medically complex twin pregnancy we were just passed 12 wks gestation, by the time we saw the heart specialists we were past 15 wks, by the time we were able to access care out of state because, Arizona— 20 wks.
#SB1164
What I had to travel across state lines and pay 9k to do traumatized me and broke my heart, but I’m here today because of it and so is my daughter. Abortion is health care. This ban is dangerous and we will see an immediate, devastating impact.
I was part of
@GovernorHobbs
amicus brief in this case bc I experienced what happens when you need abortion care and you can’t access it. Limiting access to any health care is dangerous and I am devastated to think that Arizonans will continue to go through what I did, or worse.
I loved crying happy tears this time with
@GovernorHobbs
,
@AZSenateDems
,
@AZHouseDems
, and too many incredible leaders, advocates and friends to mention 🤍 thank you for all of your work to fight this and WIN.
We said goodbye to our son exactly one year ago today. I was finally ready to tell my story for the first time (why not start with the legislature?) in opposition to
#SB1457
this morning. Unfortunately, as with so many others, I was never given the chance to speak.
#handsoffaz
So as
@TylerPaceAZ
said, “I’m not a doctor”, but I do know from experience that the practice of selective reduction does not exclusively apply to IVF. Let’s leave decisions regarding who does and does not qualify for medical procedures to the medical professionals?

@PhxJayKing
We should start a support group. When I was a cocktail server in college she would come in to drink and we would all play rock, paper, scissors to determine which of us had to serve her. She was vicious.
And many birthing people do not have the privilege of being able to cross state lines and shell out thousands of dollars on a moment’s notice and NOBODY SHOULD HAVE TO.
I struggle daily with PTSD from my high risk twin pregnancy. While it’s not lost on me that we were privileged to be able to do so, a major source of my trauma was having to cross state lines to access abortion care.

#ShoutYourAbortion
Texas’s abortion ban is a devastating blow to constitutional rights.
Today, with access to abortion on the line at SCOTUS, we must stand together and speak out.
RT if you want to live in a nation where people can make their own deeply personal choices about family planning.
The lifesaving care I trustingly received from my doctor is simply not up for any intervention outside of the doctor patient relationship, and certainly not for a jury to determine whether or not it was reasonable.

Reps.

discuss
#SB1600
cruel “born alive” measure. Shah: it’s unethical and “borders on torture” for state to insert itself in Dr.-patient relationship to mandate CPR when a stillborn fetus has no chance of survival, with criminal penalties at stake.
The gaslighting here is beyond. What a disgusting way to treat anyone, let alone an elected official. Wow. I wish our fearless leader

“I’m not a doctor, but…” is uttered too many times to count as our legislators erode access to critical maternal healthcare. Let’s not play doctor. Please leave decisions about the practice of medicine to those qualified to make them.

The powerful female leadership in Arizona right now is 🔥🔥🔥
I hope to put the kind of energy and emotion behind anything, ever, in life, the way

👏👏👏 While today’s ruling will have no impact on the

, it’s truly shocking that
@GeneralBrnovich
bought into meritless arguments based on a crackpot legal theory that put Arizonans at risk of losing health care.

Touting (your choice to have) an unmedicated birth as some badge of honor is really annoying and problematic. And please, ffs, stop referring to it as “natural childbirth”. All childbirth is

The
#ACA
made significant gains in children’s access to health care. Almost three million children nationwide gained coverage thanks to the ACA. If the law is overturned, many of these children will lose their insurance.

There are a handful of Arizona leaders that I know to be true blue public servants and
@CharleneforAZ
👑 is one of the very best. I have had the privilege of witnessing this first hand. I’m also honored to call her a friend. Congratulations! 🎉

As a new parent with no idea wtf I’m doing, it’s cringe, but mommy bloggers/momfluencers are helpful. I have to unfollow all of them because of the deafening silence on abortion. Anyone know of
#proabortion
voices in that space? There is a need!
Welcome to the 1950s. Senate Majority Leader Sonny Borrelli has a suggestion for women who want a state law guaranteeing access to contraception. via

I still can’t quite believe I witnessed an elected official in session at the capitol read a psalm dedicated to unborn babies because they won’t get to hunt for Easter eggs. That actually happened, right? 🤯
Breastfeeding is not some simple, free solution to the
#formulashortage
. Anyone arguing that it is free and easy, or somehow superior, has never tried it and is sorely mistaken. Changing the conversation about breastfeeding is long overdue.
1/ Breastfeeding isn't free — and it isn't a solution to the nation’s baby formula shortage.
The response to the shortage, which has shelves across the US carrying nearly half their usual supply in recent weeks, overlooks the high costs of breastfeeding.
I am urging Senators Sinema and Kelly to join the majority of Americans who support holding brand name drug companies accountable and lower prices on life-saving medications. They must address the cost of prescription drugs.
Arizonans shouldn’t have to choose between filling their prescriptions or paying their electric bill. I’m working in the Senate to pass prescription drug reform, which would lower out-of-pocket costs to help Arizonans afford the medicines they need.
Y’all leave
@chrissyteigen
alone. It’s absolutely understandable for her to just now realize she had an abortion.

is confusing af, traumatic, and totally isolating. It brings complex grief met with little to no sympathy. Have some fucking class.
63% of adults with

Hi all, this is Ady’s wife, Rachael. I’m devastated to share the news that Ady has died from complications of ALS. You probably knew Ady as a healthcare activist. But more importantly he was a wonderful dad and my life partner for 18 years. [1/4]

Just "bumping" this for
@TylerPaceAZ
because your little
90 day life probationary period "amendment" did absolutely nothing to mitigate this strong conviction you stood with when you voted against

a few weeks ago? I guess I'm a little confused.
“We are asking a panel of lay individuals to determine medical judgement, to play the board of medicine. That’s a large reach.”
Thank you for having the courage to use common sense.

Dr. Goodrick is a total badass. 🤩She provided care for me when I realized I was too traumatized and needed help, but didn’t know where to turn. Proud to be in abortion club with her.

Chad Readler is one of the most anti-ACA judges that the Trump administration has nominated to the federal bench.
@SenMcSallyAZ
