Just had a doctor straight-up refuse to see me because I asked him to wear a mask 🙃. Like the conversation was that simple: When I asked, he said he wouldn’t wear one and when I said that wasn’t negotiable for me, he said then he wouldn’t see me. #CovidIsntOver.

I told him I was immunocompromised and he said that the @CDCgov and govt said COVID is over. I told him 2k people are still dying a week he just repeated the same thing. I left because I realized it wasn’t worth trying to see a dr who clearly did not care about my well-being.

The @CDCgov’s insistence that COVID is over when it is not continues to endanger public health. We now know how to prevent COVID spread and they are choosing not to. And until they a lot more people are going to die and more will be infected, all completely unnecessarily.

@robpertray Americans *did* have massive uprisings in 2020, but bc they were led by Black folks they were dismissed, and bc of extreme policing & healthcare/employment connections in the US the danger was much higher. Black activists have been pushing back against this narrative for months.

@ObsessedTeach Taking a teacher away from an understaffed school because you *checks notes* wore jeans for a spirit day is all kinds of wrong priorities, petty, and inappropriate. Solidarity to you and your team 💕.

@emilykmay Gentle nudge for you to consider that wokeness *is* genuine kindness, empathy, justice, and awareness. This kind of change is absolutely part of wokeness, and that’s not a bad thing! ⚪️ supremacists are just trying to villainize the word because it’s rooted in Black liberation.

Today, during an appointment at @HopkinsMedicine, the nurse told me she’d never heard of long COVID. Not maliciously—she was genuinely surprised to hear it could affect people for months to years. Hopkins, how is the mere *existence* of long COVID not part of ongoing training?.

Masks work. They have since saved me multiple times. But in an enclosed space, they are not enough. We need *layers* of protection. If we’d had the windows open, my life could be very different right now. #CovidIsAirborne.

@robpertray Attempts at that deep-cutting organizing is happening here too, but again, because it’s primarily being done by Black organizers, it’s being overlooked & dismissed by white folks. That limit in worker organizing is deeply tied into racism from white leftists.

@ProfesoraLMO What’s awful is that this behavior is often systemically encouraged by employers; many caregivers don’t get PTO that lets them stay home with their child who has COVID and/or get otherwise penalized for taking the time off.

@julia_doubleday He’s immunocompromised and has been masked at every event, often the only one. Ofc I’m glad he’s taking precautions, but it sucks to watch everyone around him not give a damn. Like at his own table at the Emmys, nobody else was masked.

Adding this here.
@snorman1776 @maxwellhallel The authors of that Cochrane review themselves state that their evidence was inconclusive, yet the paper has been erroneously misinterpreted by anti-mitigation ideologues as proof respirators don’t reduce infection.

@realdebfarmer I appreciate you all so much and know that I’ve seen just a fraction of the hell y’all are put through. I’ve spent the last 2+ years of long COVID seeing a lottttt of doctors and am so grateful for the ones who have been doing what they can to help me.

@matange2 @Atipico1996 Cuba and New Zealand have also had significant control of the virus. All three countries have chosen to prioritize reducing spread over the economy, whereas the US and almost every other capitalist country have done the opposite. I agree it’ll be interesting to see down the line.

@robpertray You are, in tweets like this and the arguments that you’re making defending it. Saying that it’s people arguing about ableist language preventing a general strike, and not issues like deep-seated anti-Blackness holding back the very real revolutionary organizing work being done.

I am a huge fan of @Ologies, and I say this from a place of good faith & hope that you will understand that your words as a science communicator matter immensely, even in a passing comment, and contributing to the narrative that we are post-pandemic is not only inaccurate, but 2/.

@robpertray There is no the-singular-reason, of course. Racism is a massive reason in the mix of it though, and pretending the work isn’t happening and that white folks’ racism isn’t huge in holding it back only feeds into it.

@emilykmay I hear you! It’s become a huge dogwhistle. And, to that same end, I’d offer you to consider that it’s important, especially for non-Black people, to not be trying to distance ourselves from “wokeness” in our inclusivity measures for that exact reason.

@ButNotTheCity And on top of that, they’re only “progressive” for ⚪️ people. There are all kinds of stories that Black folks in particular share about its not even being safe for them to travel there, let alone live there. Their brand of racism is particular.

This article is titled "Why wear a mask to a protest?" but honestly could just as well be titled "Why wear a mask in public spaces?" Really great resource for talking with others self-ID'd leftists who don't get why masking is critical praxis.
PHEW! I decided to take this week's discourse at face value and, in good faith, spell out why every self-identified leftist should, of course, mask up at protests! . This is not intended as a call out, but a call in. Solidarity <3.

@emilypawley When I was a kid it always felt kinda cool (mayb too strong a word lol) coming into a classroom when the lights were off bc it 1. just felt different, like a change of pace from everything else from the day, and 2. was a little moment to relax after coming out of a hectic hallway.

It’s messed up that my cancer patient dad was told to go to the ER, but spent 10 minutes deliberating whether or not to go because of the very high risk of getting exposed to COVID. No one should have to make this kind of decision. @AdventistHC, reinstate mask mandates. 1/2.

@MixtUpMixy Am I reading/remembering incorrectly, or is this from May 2022? I thought the CDC had been saying 1 in 5 since around then, but WHO was the one who said 1 in 10 😬. This is 0% defending the CDC btw; the opposite really, that they’ve known this for a while and yet little press.

To be clear: this is a lawyer, with two jobs, who was running for state office, but has to end his campaign because he was gentrified out of his district and can no longer afford the apt where he’s lived for 5 years. What a microcosm for what’s happening in Boston and #mapoli 😔.
Today Im announcing the end of my campaign. Heartbroken that this journey is over and furious that policy choices, and not voters are the ones bringing it to an end. But most of all grateful for everyone that supported us. The fight does not end here. Full statement below:

@emilykmay Even if it wasn’t your intention, “That is not wokeness, that is kindness” says there’s a way to be genuinely kind without associating with “wokeness” — a talking point esp used with weaponized ⚪️ woman tears, and that distancing causes very real material harm for Black folks.

@emilykmay I say all of this not as an attack — really, as the opposite of one. I say it because I know you do truly care about this and don’t intend to do harm, but intention and impact are different things. I hope you’ll consider this for next time. I’m also happy to clarify if needed!.

@bbbozzz @prntgdcolonized Hey, whitesplaining anti-Blackness to a Black woman is not our place. This is a time to listen and learn. There’s a huge, huge difference between being anti-race mixing and mourning the reality of persistent sexual assault that Black women still face—even now—from white men.

@sewlove33 Unfortunately, it’s completely legal here. He was siding that both the federal and state government have said that COVID precautions are no longer necessary, and he’s right. That’s what’s so infuriating: POTUS + the CDC’s insistence on pretending it’s over is the root of this.

Everyone in power insisted that we had to “return to normal” ASAP and that COVID was over when it wasn’t (and still isn’t), which has killed over a million people and counting and fully disabled 4+ million with long COVID, but yeah what a mystery 🤔.
Millions of workers are still missing from the U.S. labor force three years after COVID-19 surfaced, and economists are scratching their heads as to how big the gap actually is and where all these people went.

@Blueelectron4 @sophiehurwitz This is a mezuzah, which is a piece of parchment with a specific prayer written on it, inside of a decorative case, which Jews put on the doorposts of their homes! Usually it’s put up with nails, tacks, command strips or loops of painter’s tape, and say a prayer upon hanging it.

@GKaralakos @CallMeMoprah @Kristine051377 It’s only considered “secular” bc we live in a functionally Christian country, & it’s celebrated all over the planet because Christians colonized & killed millions of people and forced those who survived to be Christian. It doesn’t make it non-religious just bc it’s the majority.

The number is actually over 250,000 at this point 🥴
Reminder: 60,000 of these violent, illegal settlers are Americans. They enjoy all the rights of U.S. citizenship; all the privileges of U.S. passports. They CHOSE to leave the U.S., to go and steal land from Palestinians, who have nothing else, and nowhere to go. Criminals.
