Be there when a loved one goes through a health challenge. Paid family leave benefits are now available to Colorado workers through the state’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance program. Learn more at .
So I met the President of the United States today. Never thought that would happen.
He was very gracious and I told him “I wish you weren’t here.” And he said “I know.”
Oh man if this fellow met my wife.*

Lindsey Graham tells young women that, “There’s a place for you in America — if you are pro-life — if you embrace your religion and you follow traditional family structure".
What a bad guy...
Real quick
@jaredpolis
I know you’re really busy but can we get an emergency declaration requiring people to mute their phones on conference calls, let me know thanks. 😂
Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service. They deserve your vote:
Pat Teegarden is a name you might not know. He wasn’t around to get famous. He worked building policy for the Department of Labor and Employment.
He passed away far too soon.
He was also an amazing, thoughtful friend. I never got to say goodbye and will miss him so much.
So quickly, I’m proud that
@JoeNeguse
is my Congressman.
Not because he gave some good speeches, which he did. I’ve seen that for years.
Because he showed character in a body where he knew it wouldnt be rewarded.
He’s shown Congress what it could be like if it did better.
It’s worth noting that there are several Republicans charged with supervising elections in Colorado who are administering an election in which they were personally defeated, and they are doing it calmly and professionally without incident.
Right now, in a basement somewhere in Colorado, four teenagers who have the day off from school are forming a band called “Bomb Cyclone”, so take note as you plan your 2023 Grammy viewing.
If you’re interested in getting involved in public leadership because you truly want to serve your community, I can see how you’d be discouraged these days.
Please don’t take this as a sign you don’t belong in this process. Please take it as a sign we need you more than ever.
To be clear, I don’t really care about which party, if any, fills the seat. Let the law figure that out.
I care that people feel safe coming to work on Monday. We’ll figure out the rest.
May the sick be healed,
May the hungry be fed,
May the mourning be comforted, and
May the marginalized be given strength.
And may those of us who are none of those work to make sure it happens.
Happy New Year.
Today, the first bill I ever worked on five years ago finally passed thanks to the work of
@leslieherod
.
We’re making it the law that people no longer lose their driver’s license just because they owe money not related to public safety. Thanks to all who made this happen.
I apologize, I chaired the beginning of the budget debate, so am only now getting around to posting the greatest Colorado legislative meme of all time from
@maddy_zann
.

So
@GovofCO
has been holding public bill signings at a breathtaking pace the past couple weeks.
A lot of the bills don’t mean much to most people, but they mean a ton to the people who worked on them.
He must be exhausted, but thousands of Coloradans appreciate it.
We have surely disagreed, but
@colewist
is one of the most honorable people I’ve met in this state. I know what it’s like not to support a recall that some of your friends want.
If you want leaders with integrity instead of blind partisanship, stand with the people who show it.
I was in denial. Until yesterday. Last year, state GOP leadership failed to speak up to defend me when RMGO carpet bombed my house district with negative flyers. Now, these same leaders pledge to work with RMGO to take out my successor in a recall. I do not support this effort.
I’m so grateful it appears there have been no injuries in Broomfield today as an engine failed in a large plane, sending large parts falling into our community.
Everyone on this damn website who is horrific to trans people should watch the trans person *continue to recognize the horrific person* after he does this. She’s holding the gavel. She let him keep going. She shows grace in the face of cruelty. Your false victimhood ends tonight.
This afternoon, Republican Rep. Ken DeGraff misgendered Rep. Brianna Titone on the floor of the Colorado House and refused to correct himself when Titone called out the error. This is harassment.
I don’t work there anymore, but as the only person to successfully start a call for expulsion of a Colorado House member in the last century, those calling to expel Rep. Hernandez are both wrong and somewhat insulting to the serious work we did.
I condemn Hamas, and I condemn-- in the strongest ways possible-- all violence against civilians. My heart is heavy for the innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives lost. And I am sorry for the harm I have caused to many in the Jewish community and the Israeli community this week.
Today
@FaithWinterCO
and I turned in our signatures for paid family and medical leave for all Coloradans.
This fall we look forward to talking with you about it a lot more!
I’m too mad. I’m too sad. I’m not good at either.
So I’m not going to be satisfied with either. I have legislation coming with
@MonicaDuran24
to help stop gun violence as domestic violence.
That’s what I’m going to do, and I’m going to help others doing other things.
You bet your fucking ass.
@kcbecker
and
@leslieherod
dropping F bombs is one of the things that comforts me most tbh. Let’s me know that the right people are angry enough.
This was the hardest article about me and
@FaithWinterCO
I’ve ever read:
You know what we didn’t do? Attack the journalist who wrote it.
You know what we did do? Go to work to solve the problem.
Oh and we won.
Be better y’all.
I guess I’ve never said this explicitly, but here it is:
No policy position you hold, no political party you’re a part of, and no level of influence you have provides an excuse for the way you treat women.
"It's just growth, growth, growth." Once considered a bedroom community of Denver, Colorado Springs has become a city where more people are choosing to live for its own sake.
My friend
@repjanetbuckner
is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. If everyone else in the building tonight showed half the grace she does we’d be a lot closer to living as Christ asked us to.
It's getting really ugly in the
#HB1032
(sex ed) hearing. Dea Almans of Evergreen called
@buckner
a pedophile, and James Powers said if she votes for the bill she's a sinner, which drew a host of "Amens" from the Christians in the audience.
@colo_politics
#coleg
How nice of them.
New: After a sheriff’s deputy was murdered in a Denver suburb, Colorado state Rep. Cole Wist took action by sponsoring a red flag bill. It likely cost him his seat. ProPublica spoke to Wist about the harsh realities of gun reform.
My girl is 6 and she’s reading a lot these days.
She notices pretty much every time in every book that girls don’t get the same chances as boys.
Be more like my girl.
Does anyone else live in perpetual fear of receiving a text saying “Are you joining the call?” and having no idea what call the person is talking about?
So I didn’t know y’all were going to love this as much as I did, but given that you have you should know it is the masterpiece of Madeline Zann, who works with me.
Man I try to avoid these things, but here we go.
Today the Colorado Senate GOP sought and received an ex parte restraining order from a judge.
Worth remembering just in case the Senate GOP decries ex parte temporary protection orders very, very soon.
Fine, I’ll do it.

Hot take: FMLA was a mistake. It’s unpaid and only covers about half of employees. Tons of people aren’t covered and tons more can’t afford it. But it shut down federal debate on worker leave down for 30 years.
You can pass paid leave for all it turns out. Trust me.
@nexton9news
Oh for crying out loud that’s the whole damned point. I have a heart too. I have a family I’m not going to see too.
Being a leader means using both your head and your heart to act in the same way you request of the people you serve.
So today marks 13 years since I married the love of my life, and we’re approaching 20 years since we met and 18 that we’ve been together.
Anyway, I recommend it.
As everyone goes back to the legislature, a few of us won’t be there. So it goes, but I did spend the morning thinking about a lot of my old friends, especially Hugh. Rest easy.
It’s been two years. That wasn’t the worst day, the worst day was a few days later.
I lived in a canyon of stigma and shame for 16 months. I’m out now and it’s good.
My one ask going forward is those who preach no stigma also practice it with the humans they know. Thats all.
On the day the transportation funding bill we’ve been working on for years comes up for a final vote in the Senate,
@FaithWinterCO
and I came across each other randomly during our respective commutes.
If you believe in omens…
I’m so grateful to my friend
@Kyle_Mullica
, who isn’t spending his days with his kiddos like many of us.
He’s wearing a mask and caring for others in emergency medical situations.
If you want to criticize any of his health legislation to me in the future, just know that.
Today, during his State of the State address,
@GovofCO
@jaredpolis
recognized Samantha Hosmer, a mom from Erie, who used our new all-day kindergarten to be able to join
@SVVSD
in a new job in special education.
Today, I really appreciate the work of our House leaders
@kcbecker
and
@AlecGarnett
.
There are a lot of people who want to talk about politics and few who want to carry the weight of governing.
You can’t fully understand the difference until you’ve done both, and it’s immense.
Tomorrow,
@FaithWinterCO
and I are going to help submit 205,443 signatures to put paid family and medical leave for Colorado workers on the ballot this November.
We’ve had great partners in this effort over the years, and we’re ready to make it real for Colorado families.
Yesterday, we took action by ordering law enforcement to change its policies to address systemic inequality in policing.
Today would be a good day for those of us who set education policy, workplace policy, and fiscal policy to take our own advice.
John McCain’s death leaves a tragic void.
How do we honor it?
By filling it. Let’s be imperfect public servants who are willing to make mistakes and then correct them. Who are not afraid to do what we believe is right, and then fix it if we need to.
Let’s go.
Excited to tell you that our bill to provide paid family leave for Colorado workers was introduced today.
I’m excited to work with
@FaithWinterCO
@COSenWilliams
and
@MonicaDuran24
to make paid leave a reality for Colorado families.
I am devastated. Carrie was such an amazing force and warm soul. There aren’t many people for whom I’d say our entire state is significantly worse off because she’s not around. Carrie is one.
It’s our job to make sure her work continues for Coloradans with disabilities.
Folks, I’m so proud to be married to such an amazing woman.
Our twelfth anniversary is still eight days away. I just can’t sit on this photo that long.
It’s hard to overstate the extent to which
@JoeNeguse
is one of Theo’s favorite people on earth.
I mean, I’m pretty sure my wife and I rank higher, but I can’t 100% guarantee it.
I shy away from spiking footballs, but I’ll take a moment to note that
@Sully_720
is, for this moment, standing in the end zone and we should congratulate him as well as well as folks like
@maddy_zann
and
@timdicksonCO
who helped put him there.
Forget politics. Just forget them for a second.
@colewist
@LangSias
@Liston4HD16
helped lift us up and carry us to the right result today. I will forever appreciate you.
Anyway, if you believe in democracy, you should want as many people to vote as possible.
If you’re more parochial, know that I’m a Democrat and the first major all-mail election in Colorado was one of the worst nights in my political life.
It will be fine I promise. /end
I have a lot to say about the attempted recall of
@RochelleGalindo
when the time comes.
Right now, the two of us have work to do.
For now, I’ll say no one has ever spoken about me like this in my career as a legislator and the reason why is really important.
There are 100 legislators in the Colorado General Assembly, and I’m honored that 58 joined today in supporting paid family and medical leave for Colorado workers.
I’m not going @ all of them, but I really appreciate it.
Paid family and medical leave is good for families, good for business, and good for Colorado. This November, we're voting
#YesOn118
!
#COPolitics
And we're proud to have the support of 58 CO state legislators:
Share if you agree!
I’m happy to tell you that, after a great discussion, the House gave first approval today to my bill with
@FaithWinterCO
to provide paid family leave to all Colorado workers!
I love this picture because we’re all waving to Ellie, who was with us today.
It’s been a hard road, but now you will decide if we get paid medical and family leave.
@FaithWinterCO
@YadiraCaraveo
@domoreno
and I are all in.
Please join me in going to to endorse paid family and medical leave in Colorado!
Ellie: I thought we were playing the Netherlands.
Me: We are.
Ellie: Then who are the Dutch?
Me: The same people. It’s confusing. Let’s go ahead and get the Holland part out of the way now while we’re at it.
The Westboro “Baptist” “Church” has announced they plan to seek attention and spread hate at the expense of the young people of my community.
We love every single student in Broomfield for who they are, and a few immature, selfish adults won’t change that.
Good morning to all worked so hard to being paid family and medical leave to Colorado
Today the Supreme Court affirmed the program as the valid law of the land
It’s a great day for Colorado families
@FaithWinterCO
@YadiraCaraveo
@domoreno
@jkabourek
I’ve been proud of many colleagues in my time at this Capitol. Not sure I’ve ever been more proud of anyone than
@Kyle_Mullica
today.
His patience and grace are amazing.
Real quick everyone:
Be excited!
But also, as someone who has tried to pass big policies with a Senate with zero margin for error vote-wise, know that if you want to pass any of the audacious things you have in mind, know that you’re in for the fight of your lives.
Meanwhile, in the Colorado House, Minority Leader
@PatrickForCO
just offered an amendment to a bill about surprise medical billing.
The sponsors agreed it made the bill better and accepted it. At which point he said he could now support the bill.
Good job all.
I’ve seen
@leslieherod
speak beautifully about her relationship with Christ.
Hebrews 11:1 says “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
My faith that Christ is at work in the world today is stronger because of her acts in this world.
State Rep. Chris Hansen has been selected by a vacancy committee to fill the seat of former Sen. Lois Court.
He is the 21st person in the current 100-member Colorado legislature to at some point have received a vacancy appointment:

I never knew Alex.
I know his legacy damned well because his father has never stopped protecting it.
Tom, I wouldn’t ask what you’ve been through on any father. But it’s a profound honor to serve with you.
