I’m a recovering crack cocaine addict living with HIV. Host: Back from Broken, a recovery podcast. Talking head:

🚨Career Announcement🚨
24 years ago this month, I started my journalism career as a television sports anchor. Now, I’m returning to TV as an on-air host for the PBS affiliate in New Mexico! 🤠✌🏼
Hearing folks like Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers Band and legendary Black gospel musicians speak with such reverence for
#JimmyCarter
in this CNN documentary reinforces my belief that Carter is perhaps the coolest and most decent man to ever be president.
Now you may think my dog did this. But I have Rider right here. She said it’s not her. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. I have great confidence in my intelligence people. But I will tell you that Rider was extremely strong and powerful in her denial today.

To rock my soul.
Goodbye Bill Walton, from a Grateful nation of basketball fans and Deadheads who will miss you dearly.
Today, I celebrate 7 years of sobriety.
I’ve overdosed and woken up in hospitals. I’ve been to crack houses and jail. I’ve sold drugs to support my addiction. I used to think I was broken beyond repair.
But, we can recover. Every one of us.
Look, mom and dad. I’m still here.
Today, I celebrate six years of sobriety.
No more ambulance rides. No more needles and crack pipes. No more agonizing withdrawals. No more suffering.
Today: Tears of gratitude. And Hope.
Look, mom and dad. I’m still here.
Our country lost a hero today.
Samuel Sandoval was a Navajo Code Talker who served 5 combat tours in WWII. Using Navajo language, he secretly transmitted messages that Axis powers could not crack. Code Talkers have been credited with helping the US win the war.
Thank you, sir.
My God, Richard M. Fierro is a goddamn hero.
An Army veteran and officer, and an LGBTQ ally, Fierro told the NY Times that supporting the rights and freedoms of people “to do whatever the hell they want” is the reason he fought for our country. Wow.
Neighbor one: Throws loud parties every night, music bumping, trash everywhere, police often called, people getting into drunk fights on the porch, underage drinking, people driving home drunk.
Neighbor 2: Didn’t rake his leaves.
Lester Holt: Why didn’t you rake your leaves?
In an exclusive interview with Lester Holt, President Biden said it was a mistake to use the word “bullseye” while discussing former President Trump, but said to “focus on what [Trump is] doing”.

@Morning_Joe
@MSNBC
This was the strongest version of Biden we’ve heard from in a long time. An almost populist Biden who pushed back against billionaire donors and media elites, daring Dems to challenge him at the convention. He’s a fighter today and he landed some strong punches against trump.
On this day in 1990, Elton John checked into rehab in Chicago for alcoholism, cocaine addiction and bulimia. He mopped floors. His sponsor was a garbage truck driver. He’s since helped countless others with their own addiction struggles.
Congrats on 33 years sober, Sir Elton.
I know what it’s like to fall down.
I used to fall down a lot.
Mikaela, you haven’t let down a single Coloradan tonight. We’re all still here for you. And every one of us will be cheering… when you get back up.
@etnow
The source went on to say that Kelce also won’t be joining Taylor Swift for brunch Sunday, because unfortunately he has to work on Sundays. Maybe once he becomes manager he won’t have to work weekends.
Today, I celebrate nine years of sobriety.
I went to jail. I overdosed. AIDS nearly killed me. I couldn’t put down the pipe or the needle. I lost everything.
Then one day, I looked in the mirror and said:
“I love you. Let’s get better.”
Look, mom and dad…
I’m still here.
I’m not seeing my parents for Thanksgiving despite nearly losing my dad last week.
A guy I sponsor cried during our last phone call because he badly wanted to spend his 1st ever sober holiday with his folks.
To the many Denverites making sacrifices for Thanksgiving, thank you.
Frasier: You refused to take me to see West Side Story on my 8th birthday.
Marty: Because of the gangs. That’s scary for kids!
Frasier: Even gangs that dance?!
Marty: ESPECIALLY gangs that dance!
I love you Mr. Crane, my TV dad. RIP John Mahoney 🐶
You know who didn’t deserve any of this shit today? The hardworking people who clean the Capitol. These folks are the REAL patriots and they deserve respect and thanks.
Came very close to saying “Fuck it” today. It was a bad day and I almost bought dope to shoot into my arm.
Instead, I called friends in recovery to talk things through. Then I played with my dog to allow the trigger to pass. Now I’m OK. And I’m still sober.
That’s how it works.
If you're a Colorado reporter who covered this week's shooting spree in Denver and are now in the field covering winds and wildfires around Boulder...
...you are a fucking pro.
Thank you for your service to our communities.
Just here retweeting the work of reporters in Denver covering yet another terrible act of mass violence and thinking how fortunate we are to have professional, compassionate journalists working when these kinds of tragedies happen.
It’s not just the Saint Peter’s Peacocks basketball team that’s the Cinderella story.
The majority of Saint Peter’s students are the first in their families to attend college, many are from immigrant families. As a first gen student myself, this is the ultimate feel good story.
Every Xmas Eve, my dad & I watch his fav episode of the
#WestWing
, where Toby (
@Richard_Schiff
) arranges a funeral for a homeless Vietnam vet.
My dad, an Army vet, has had a rough year. We almost lost him recently. I quarantined for 2 weeks be here. Merry Christmas, dad.
I have HIV. If I get COVID-19, all bets are off for me.
I wear a mask for you.
Please, please, do the same for me, for others with compromised immune systems, and for grandmas and grandpas.
We’re gonna have better days. I just want all of us to live long enough to see them.
@NormOrnstein
Trump: Says something maniacal.
Media: Meh, that’s just Trump.
Biden: Says millions instead of billions
Media: THE OLD MAN IS FUCKED NOW!
I once couldn’t imagine going a day without smoking crack or shooting dope into my arm. I overdosed and nearly died more times than I can remember. I felt hopeless.
Today, I celebrate 8 years of sobriety.
Don’t give up. We can recover.
Look mom and dad, I’m still here.
@RpsAgainstTrump
I don’t know much, but I know with certainty that, if he were alive today, John McCain would fiercely speak out against the shit that’s happening in the political party he served faithfully and honorably his entire career.
On July 29, 1990, Elton John started rehab for cocaine addiction. This was no fancy place. It was at a general hospital in Chicago. He mopped floors every night. His recovery sponsor was, and still is, a garbage truck driver. This is how it works.
Happy 32 years sober, Elton! 🎹
This is Tim Boyd, the now former mayor of Colorado City, Texas. He resigned today in the middle of an emergency disaster after telling constituents without heat, light or water that they are owed “NOTHING!”
Sources tell me Boyd will now pursue his dream of writing for Hallmark.
“I’m proud that, in my four years in the White House, we never dropped a bomb, launched a missile or fired a bullet to kill another person.”

THEY FUCKING DID IT OH MY GOSH THE NUGGETS ARE GOING TO THE NBA FINALS!!!!!!!!!!! AAAGHHI’M GETTING TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NUGGETS!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭🏀🏀✌🏼🏀
I'm facing some sudden and complicated medical issues that are threatening my immune system and longevity. It's a lot. I've already overcome so much in life. But I'm trying to stay positive and hopeful.
God, grant me the serenity... to accept the things I cannot change...
I used to smoke crack behind dumpsters outside the Colorado Capitol.
Today, I was in our nation’s capital, talking to Medicaid directors from across the country about the things we need to help those who are struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
We can recover.
When Eminem was suffering from addiction, he called a friend to get him some help: Elton John.
Eminem celebrated 13 years of sobriety last month.

Because the pack journalism mentality of the beltway media is too busy asking whether Biden can do his job instead of reporting on him… doing his job.
Only John Prine can get Bill Murray on stage at the Grand Ole Opry for a rousing singalong of “Paradise.”
GET BETTER, SIR! We love you!

So when the game is rescheduled(which will probably take a day away from our “break”), we wil play them at full strength… But they got to sneak a win when we weren’t at full strength, only two days ago??? Let’s make it make some sense here.
On the final Nuggets possession last night, Jamal Murray walked the ball up the court, glanced over at Malone, and knew exactly what play they were gonna run without calling time out— and they executed.
You can manufacture a team of bought and paid-for All-Stars with zero
Today, my mom found her nephew (my cousin) dead in his apartment. He struggled with health issues and addiction. My mom was always there for him. He would call Spanish radio stations to dedicate songs to her. My mom’s devastated. I love you, mom. I’m staying sober for you.
In a game where the Golden State Warriors broadcast team trash-talked some of our players —mostly bench guys doing the best they can on a team that’s decimated by injuries— the Nuggets just went into Chase Center and beat the best team in basketball.
I love you, Denver.
@AppelhansBraden
Man, this is such a beautiful post. Thank you for displaying a vulnerability that’s gonna help others who struggle with the same things. When I got sober, it was because of recovery stories from people who struggled with addiction. You’re doing the same for mental health, Braden.
Substance abuse is a living hell. People scream at you, “Why do you keep messing up? Get your shit together! What’s wrong with you?— Don’t you know we’re in the playoffs?!”
Val Nichushkin needs help
If we really care about him, that’s all that should matter right now.

I’m 46 years old today. 🥳
With all the drugs I did, I never thought I’d see 30 much less my forties. But I’m Still Standing! And now I’m gonna eat some strawberry shortcake and thank God for another day. Thanks for your love, everyone!
Eight years ago today, I was in a hospital bed after overdosing on a combination of cocaine and morphine. Today I’m alive, sober and grateful to be with you all.
I am pleased to announce that the dispute involving me and my former employer, Colorado Public Radio, has been resolved. Additionally, and with my gratitude, CPR is supporting me and my efforts to produce future episodes of the award-winning podcast, “Back from Broken.”
It has been my great privilege and a tremendous joy talking to you folks on the radio on weekends, and sharing inspiring stories of recovery on my Back from Broken podcast. Today though, my nine year journey at Colorado Public Radio has come to an end.
I’ll have some big news to
I was at a Denver Safeway a few minutes ago. A man tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Vic Vela. I confirmed. We shook hands. He said:
“Your podcast saved my life. YOU saved me. You’ll never know how many people you help.”

I love you, Denver.
We can recover.
I’m 45 years old today.
That’s pretty cool because I once thought I would never live to see 40. I’m so grateful to still be here with you!
“Bound to cover just a little more ground.” - Grateful Dead
I can't describe the pride I felt when I successfully stopped myself from getting high. I came dangerously close last week. But I didn't do it. I had faith in a recovery playbook that allowed the painful period to pass.
What does that feel like? Like winning the Super Bowl.
To all my friends in recovery who will stay sober while the rest of the world is drinking tonight: You rock and you should be super proud! (NYE is amateur night anyway 😅)… Here’s to my 8th sober New Year’s Eve! And here’s to a grateful and hopeful 2023. 😇♥️
Dealing with some heavy news: My dad’s been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. We’ll know more about the prognosis in the coming days. For now, please keep our family in your thoughts. My dad is an Army veteran, a football coach and a Chicano community activist. He’s a fighter.
A win is a win, but if I’m Denver, I treat this like a loss. Lakers really figured something out putting Hachimura on Jokic. That’s one of those somewhat small adjustments that can win a series.
21 years ago, my boyfriend and I got into a drug and alcohol fueled brawl at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Bruised and bloodied, we flushed cocaine down the toilet as police banged on our hotel door.
This weekend, my first trip to Vegas in recovery, I danced sober to the Grateful
I’m on the west coast, just waking up to the news from overnight in Colorado Springs.
I’m a Coloradan.
I’m a gay man.
I’m so sick and sad for the victims and their families.
And I’m just sick and tired of this shit, period.
One way or another, this darkness got to give.
Poll workers who give us the little “I voted” stickers after we cast a ballot are often retired people who volunteer to help folks vote. They just wanna lend a hand to others in their community.
To poll workers, or anyone being a helper today: Thank you for your public service.
The real winner last night was the state of Colorado.
On the national stage, two of our premier schools did not disappoint. Some kid somewhere watching the game is now thinking, "I want to go to school in Colorado."
Rocky Mountain High, Yo.
