My dad had a ‘renewables’ company out to quote for some solar panels. He asked about a heat pump and was told he’d probably need to cascade 2x 12kw units for a house like his.
I’ve just travelled back home and done a

and it comes to 4.8kw….

Another week another HG cylinder from Newark powered by a Vaillant Arotherm+.
This one has been neatly sited in the corner of the office with heat pump under the window.
Open energy monitor to keep track of performance and show the true overall efficiency.

Back in Barnet Reinstating the wet heating system that was replaced with 24kw of electric heaters. Oh and they left the 37kw gas boiler in to heat the UFH in the 2kw kitchen.

The classic ‘the builders are doing all the plumbing’- 5 bedroom house, 3 bathrooms, 9 hot water outlets, all in 15mm.
Now I have to rip up half the house to fix it.

Great to see after 12months providing heating and hot water for this 150m2 barn conversion the heat pump has used less than £600 of electric. With the addition of solar they’ve actually paid far less than that!

For some reason I hadn’t anticipated how difficult it would be to get a 130kg

Chatted with a solar ‘expert’ this week from an energy giant who said you can’t have solar PV AND a heat pump due to the incoming main not being adequate.
So what’s the truth in this and how are people doing it?

A neighbour has had his house rebuilt from brick. I estimate the heat loss to be around 2.5kw.
Build company’s preferred choice was a 30kw ideal logic.

I often get asked to price for new builds and always get told someone came in cheaper.

arotherm plus install, more faults than i can fit on a A4 piece of paper, local plumber did 3/4 plots. Pretty decent efficiency 🤦♂️ 11500 compressor starts in 2 years 😂

What % of heating industry knowledge do the vast majority of engineers actually know?
IMO most pass ACS get gas safe, get experience, but little further learning/training, I’ll start, <20%

Also things like insulation and double glazing reduce the heat loss of the house and running costs but a heat pump can be designed to run cheaper than gas in any house. It’s all about getting the design right, emitter sizes etc

Yeah we took out a Combi boiler and they had no space anywhere for a cylinder so he wanted the sunamp. It’s better CoP than I expected on hot water. He charges sunamp with the HP on cheap night tariff then top up using solar in the day.
