As a norm, I don't comment on the goings on at other churches.
That being said, it should be noted: That the nonsense coming out of FBC Dallas today is a false religion.
It is the false religion of nationalism.
Like the prosperity gospel, it should be named & repudiated.
I have over 200 hours in graduate theological education and in that time I never had a single female professor. Not one.
There is no biblical case to be made for not encouraging/inviting qualified women to teach and train students and pastors in seminary contexts.
Please @ me.
I swear some of the “progressive” *Christians* on this site would have just told Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego:
“Listen, if you put the idol within the broader context of Babylonian art, you’ll see that bowing down to it is really no big deal.”
Just a note:
If your pastor fully affirms the entirety of the Apostle's Creed, Nicene Creed, & Chalcedonian Creed; they are not a *liberal* in any way that makes sense within the context of the global & historic church.
I don't care what the anti-woke police say.
Go with God.
The gospel makes dead people alive.
And then after that...
It makes bad people better.
These two things aren't mutually exclusive: The gospel that justifies is the gospel that sanctifies.
The pagans will continue to co-opt Christian symbols, but they can never possess them.
Try and steal the sacred all you want - the earth is the Lords.
The rainbow, the supper, crowns of glory - it all belongs to Him.
Every knee will bow, every tongue confess: Christ is Lord.
If you are concerned that your pastor or your church talks too much about justice, well unfortunately, you're going to really be upset by large portions of the bible.
Could I invite you to pray for pastors and churches across Dallas?
God is exposing sin, refining His church, pruning.
This is good, but it is hard.
I know it’s easier to make snarky comments, retweet the latest headline, but would you just take time to pray?
Real people are
*Just a note for clarity: Book/Topic studies are not bible studies.*
If you invite me to a *bible* study and the book we are reading/studying is not the bible. It's not a *bible* study.
I love book/topic studies!
But a *bible* study = studying the "bible."
*Your favorite influencer doesn't care about you.*
Find a place, find a people, commit to imperfect friends/neighbors, invest in and be cultivated by a local church, pray for and follow imperfect pastors.
Be seen and loved by God. Tell others the good news.
It's not an act.
@jenniferwilkin
has decades more experience than I do studying & teaching the bible.
She's our sister in Christ & the respect
@jt_english
& I have for Jen is deep.
I love hearing feedback like this, but it also grieves me. In the church - this should be normal.
Just a regular reminder:
American Civil Religion, of the keep your eyes on "Old Glory" kind, is a false religion.
It's demonic.
Christians are an immigrant citizenry with a very clear representative symbol: not a flag, but a cross.
This is wickedness. Utter wickedness.
And Christians can't exempt themselves, our most perverse theological articulations are in the soil of this rotten fruit.
Christian Nationalism is real, it's everywhere, and it's heresy.
Whoa, look at all these strong ("broad') complementarians who have written countless articles talking about the unique vocation of men to defend women stepping up against public slander of Aimee Byrd, a sister theologian.
"RECORD SCRATCH."
*Crickets*
Today is as good a day as any to let y’all know that
@RebeccMcLaugh
& I are releasing a new podcast with Training the Church entitled “The Confronting Christianity Podcast.” (
@ConfrontingXnty
)
The goal: “Hard questions, faithfully explored.”
Hope you’ll tune in for the convos!
Now the angry theologians are mad at...*checks notes, thinks "this can't be right"....*
...the kindness, humility, & gentleness of Christ Jesus.
And yet, the good news for them is the same for my foolish heart.
Christ is gentle with us, even when we are rough with each other.
Today my dad marks 29 years of serving at a church you’ll never hear about.
Pastoring people dear to the Lord, preaching the gospel, cultivating his marriage, discipling his children.
I know the headlines are discouraging.
Faithful pastors are out there.
Congrats pops.
Today, in the midst of this winter storm: deacons from Mosaic called widows, took in moms and their kiddos, checked on a few of our local homeless friends, and gathered and shared prayer requests via Slack. All day.
I can't imagine a local church ministry without deacons.
We need a new L'abri.
Don't we?
A place where honest questions can get honest answers.
A place beyond the digital space, where ideas can be explored, relationships forged, and seekers directed.
We need a new L'abri.
Who will build it?
**Some exciting news**
Excited to share with you that I’m writing a book on union with Christ! At the gracious invitation of the team over
@bhpub
, I have begun work on “Home with God: An Invitation into Union with Christ.” (Working title)
I invite your prayers.
Tonight Mosaic Church and a sister church launch the "Forge Program." A one year theological discipleship program.
Over 50 men and women from two churches have decided to give a year in the middle of a pandemic to study the Xian story, Xian belief, & Xian formation.
Incredible.
Today is
@jenniferwilkin
's birthday. She will hate that I am going to do this, but we are going to do it: Reply with something that the Lord has used Jen to teach you...
I'll get us started: Jen Wilkin has taught me how to be a brother in Christ.
Twitter really is the best place for the “I don’t really know what happened, but my best guess is detailed in these next 8 tweets” take.
“Be angry, & do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, & be silent.
Offer right sacrifices and put your trust in the Lord.” (Ps. 4)
For season five of
#knowingfaithpodcast
we have:
*Some incredible guests.
*A focus on one of the most pivotal (and controversial) passages in the bible.
*More West Wing References.
*More Banter.
*Exclusive Knowing Faith Merch
*And behind-the-scenes content
Best. Season. Yet.
One of the most heartbreaking realities of ministry is having people who you have invested in for years just disappear. Ghosting completely.
Some pastors don't care to know people. But many more are faced with the trial of extending care only to be ignored completely.
Turns out biblical illiteracy is a bipartisan issue. This is not only a twisting of scripture, it’s the kind of bible washed militarism that is disgusting on both sides of the aisle.
President Joe Biden, referring to the sacrifice of military service members who died in Kabul today and military service in general, invokes Isaiah 6:8: "Whom shall I send?"
I am absolutely convinced that we need more churches who are hyper local.
Where the people are radically invested in the community where the church exercises the bulk of it's life together.
Where the sorrows and the joys of that place are felt by the people of God there.
After years of prayer, Dew began to follow Jesus this summer. He's my friend and I love him.
This morning he opened up his restaurant so that we could provide a Christmas brunch and share the gospel with his staff.
The kingdom moves in whispers and shouts.
Christ be praised!
Could one of the reasons we see such shackles of addiction, fear, and shame be that we've quit the laying on hands and prayer for healing and freedom from spiritual torment?
This summer I am stepping away from pastoral responsibilities at Mosaic for an extended sabbatical.
I will be off of social media for the duration of that time and not checking my work email.
I will be away from Twitter from 5/23-8/9.
I would welcome your prayers for renewal.
I have no Lord but Jesus Christ. He is the chief shepherd of the church.
I was raised as the son of a faithful pastor and I have sat under and been around pastors, good and bad, my whole life.
Matt Chandler, on the stage and off the stage, is a faithful and gracious pastor.
What are these? They are the sermon notes of a 4th grader who worships with their family at Mosaic.
We believe in and have age specific programming for kids at Mosaic, but I’ll never be convinced that kids (especially as they age) should be siloed away from corporate worship.
Fear not:
@jt_english
,
@jenniferwilkin
, and I will continue to collaborate together in a lot of formats (including podcasts).
Why? Because we are friends.
Lots of exciting stuff is afoot.
The scene that sticks with me the most from West Wing:
Jed Bartlet, in the midst of campaigning, going to the airport to sit with a staffer en route to his father who has just died.
Every time I think about it I ask myself: Would I leave the crowds for the grieving person?
Crazy! So it was what it obviously was and not what progressive Christians told us repeatedly it wasn’t?
Wild; it’s almost like there is a whole block of folks who seem terribly interested in willfully obfuscating the truth.
In the global west, you are living in a:
Hyper sexualized
Hyper individualized
Hyper blaspheming
Illiterate
Exhausted
Lonely
Death cult.
Filled with image bearers of God who need the comfort and confrontation of the gospel of the kingdom.
Prepare and act accordingly.
Today a member of Mosaic said: For the first time in our lives, if we got a job offer to leave Texas, we would have to say no because we don't want to leave our church.
And now I'm crying. Love what God is up to with our little church family in this beautifully ordinary place.
Happy Indigenous People's day!
Every tribe, tongue, and nation is filled with image bearers of God. Their is no such thing as conditional dignity.
May the Kingdom of God be marked by generous and gracious expansion and not the selfish toil of exploitation.
The response to the current "deconstructionist/exvangelical" movement is not defense...
It's invitation, imagination, and intercession rooted in humble and hopeful orthodoxy.
The majority opinion.
By a landslide.
My wife a week ago, "Do you think y'all could do an episode that's just
@jenniferwilkin
talking? And then do it that way indefinitely?"
There is such a simple joy in telling a man in our church: "Wow, that's something a good man would do. I'm so proud of you."
Everytime I say it. They are surprised.
Few men have been commended for virtue.
Let's fix that.
For men and women.
While I lament that one of my dearest friends is leaving the state, I couldn't be more excited to see this man of God lead a church in his home state! What might God do at Storyline through this faithful pastor?!
Christ be praised!
Quick personal update: Next week I will preach in view of a call to be the next Lead Pastor
@StorylineArvada
. Would love for you to pray for us over the next week.
For real y'all,
@jt_english
and
@jenniferwilkin
and I had a two our meeting yesterday dreaming up some really fun stuff for Knowing Faith Season 5.
I can't wait for some of this to start rolling out.
Y'all. Aren't. Ready.
#knowingfaithpodcast
Taking what scripture clearly presents as "not the way it's supposed to be" and using it to discredit the clear testimony of what God says is his creation design /norm for marriage is illiterate and evil.
This is what Zach is doing here.
Don't be like Zach.
“Biblical marriage is between one man and one woman.”
No it’s not.
“Biblical marriage” is between one man, one woman, and that woman's slave. (Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar)
“Biblical marriage” is between one man and two sisters after he works seven years for each of them. (Jacob,
Yo, tomorrow
@jt_english
and
@jenniferwilkin
and I are going to record a live and impromptu
#knowingfaithpodcast
.
If you have a question, respond using the hashtag.
We will send out the video link tomorrow, we can only get a hundred on the call so...first come/first serve.
In a year where sickness and death felt close, Advent reminds us that the only thing more certain than death in this world is that a day is coming when death will be no more.
For good. Forever.
And we wait, with honest hope.
In the last year, I have read as much of the primary source material on critical race theory as I can.
Critical race theory isn't a gold bar, nor is it plutonium.
Truly: It's neither as helpful or as dangerous as its most vocal proponents or critics suggest.
This is my take.
Not meant to be a hot take: But I believe the pastors of a local church should know the names of their members.
I’m not saying “one pastor” knows all the names, but the pastors collectively know the names of each member.
If it’s not the reality, it should be the aspiration.
Tomorrow is my first day as full time planter/pastor of Mosaic Church (last few months have been split between The Village and Mosaic).
I could not be more excited about what God is up to with this people in this place.
Would you pray for me/us?
In other,
#KnowingFaithPodcast
news, I am pleased to announce that all past episodes of Knowing Faith are now available in your podcasts feed.
All the way back to episode
#1
.
Sorry for the delay! It was
@jt_english
fault.
Most encouraging moment of my day: Seeing a single guy in one of our Gospel Communities helping the teenage son of a single mom in that GC with his chemistry exam studying at a local coffee shop.
No fanfare. No insta posts. Just a guy living like Jesus.
I don't know Aimee Byrd. At all.
I've read her work and she has serious ideas that should be considered with Christian charity.
She has interacted online with dignity and honor, even in a mud throwing contest.
The way she has been treated is vile. And should be called such.
I'll say this: if we can get
@KnowingFaithPod
Twitter to 10K followers this season...I will personally see to it that a
@jt_english
coffee mug is available for Christmas.
Maybe when you pour coffee into it it just says: "Well, actually...the Trinity..."
It is possible this morning to proclaim the good news of the gospel & to remind folks that it saves us from the judgment of God, the terror of shame, AND also from the idols of: White supremacy, Christian nationalism, radical individualism, & godless collectivism.
Lord, help us.
This Sunday marks 25 years that my father has been a faithful pastor at First Baptist Church of Groves, TX.
There isn't one inch of my marriage, parenting, or pastoring that his influence has not touched.
He is a righteous man.
I am unspeakably proud of him & grateful for him.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There are lots of apologetic voices out there…and
@gavinortlund
is establishing himself as one of the best because he is generous, well studied, and self controlled.
Here's a response to
@ostrachan
's critique of William Lane Craig's views on the historical Adam. And a plea for more careful and more charitable engagement on issues like this.
In last decade, pastors had to address a “prosperity” gospel that conflated life in Gods kingdom with health, wealth, and success.
In this one, we will need to address a “safety” gospel that will conflate kingdom life with affirmation and self centeredness costumed as self care.
Did you know that
@jt_english
has a book coming on "Deep Discipleship?" I've gotten to see and hear early bits and it's going to be a game changer for those passionate about discipleship in the local church.
I just preordered it.
You can preorder here:
Unfortunately, local churches can continue to give platforms to disqualified leaders.
This is precisely the case with what is happening with Dr. Paige Patterson in Florida.
It is immoral, it is unbecoming of the church, and it is injurious to the victims he silenced.
I could hear my daughter talking to herself in the bath, doing different voices, carrying on a conversation...
I asked her, "Sweetheart, what are you doing?"
She said, "I started a podcast. In the bath. It's a bath podcast."
Really excited to announce that my forthcoming book is now available for preorder:
It’s my attempt to articulate & apply the doctrine of union with Christ. In some ways, this has been my message for the last decade.
I hope it blesses those who read.
Hey
@thebibleproject
, my Thai friend just started following Jesus and I have used your videos with Thai translations to help tell the story of Jesus
Thanks for your work!
I have spoken publicly in the past, here and on Knowing Faith, about my belief in the future viability of the Southern Baptist Convention as a place of meaningful formation and cooperation for Christian witness.
Incrementally, over time, this belief has continued to be shaken.
Today was my last full time day at this place. It has been one the greatest joys of my life to serve this people these last 5 years.
Never known a more generous, humble, and excellent group of staff, ministers, and elders.
May God continue to bless
@villagechurchtx
.
The whole: “I deconstructed because I read and studied the Bible more closely…” really rings hollow when the individual has also embraced a free for all sexual ethic.
You read the Bible so closely that you missed everything it said about surrendering our sexual desires to God?
Listen, I’m as skeptical of “evangelicalism” as the next person (and I think these 4 have offered criticism that must be considered), but having “evangelicalism” weighed by this panel might be similar to having a steak reviewed by a vegan.
Looks like we have a good group of people for our panel on the 18th. If you live near San Antonio or plan to be there for the conferences, don't miss it! I'm excited to meet more faces of my online friends!
This could be really cool. What if it could also have men & women doing it together? And they could have visiting scholars on the show as well? And all of the hosts could be teaching it in actual ministry contexts as well?
Oh man, Romans would be a great start!
Wait a minute…
Hey y'all, new weekly episodes of
#knowingfaithpodcast
start dropping tomorrow! Journeying through Acts and the Apostles Creed.
Also, we are launching a mini-episode that will drop every other week on the same podcast feed called "After the Fact." We hope you enjoy it!
Today I started singing "We will feast in the house of pancakes..." to my daughter to the tune of "We will feast in the house of Zion..."
And I realized...
I am now at peak "pastor-dad" stage.
I have become my father.
What's the disconnect?
Welp, having been in those circles for almost a decade let me tell you something most women operating in this spaces already know:
The "bro" culture in the complementarian tent is widespread and toxic.
This marks the 100th regular season episode for
@KnowingFaithPod
. A few thoughts...
1.) When we started this, we had no idea how many people would want to listen.
This really just emerged because the three of us were doing theology together & thought: "We should capture this."
So this is a pretty cool story:
I prayed for a friend to follow Jesus for four years.
This past August I got to baptize him after a miraculous conversion.
A week ago I asked him, how can I help you share the gospel with the employees at the Thai restaurant you manage?
"One of the great tragedies of evangelicalism is that we are more familiar with our brand of Christianity than we are with historic Christianity. We are more familiar with John Piper than Chalcedon, more familiar with Bethel than the Apostle's Creed." -
@jt_english
Doing household visits today across Mosaic for front yard baby dedications. It's been such a joy, but at one house, while leading the blessing, I blended "lead them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" to "lead them in the destruction of the Lord."
#pastorfail
Today
@jt_english
,
@jenniferwilkin
, and I recorded some of the most fun and helpful episodes of
@KnowingFaithPod
ever.
I wish you all could see what it's like behind the scenes when we are learning from each other.
Here's a glimpse...
Hey
#knowingfaithpodcast
listeners, did you like the live recording two weeks ago? Well, we are recording two episodes live this Wednesday from 9-11AM.
We will tweet out a link on where to tune in at from this account,
@jt_english
,
@villagechurch
, and
@jenniferwilkin
tomorrow.
Not all "white evangelicals" participated in what happened Wednesday.
Obviously.
But most "white evangelicals" who supported Trump considered the rhetoric/character (for years) that inflamed what happened as an acceptable risk for what they viewed as greater policy ends.
Last week Mosaic Church finished a nine month sermon series through the whole story of scripture.
The goal: provide a general catechism through preaching the Xian story & key doctrines of Xian belief.
You can find all the sermons and resources here:
Every week I get an email from a different seminary student that aspires to vocational ministry.
The question in some form or another: How do I bridge from seminary to vocational work in a church?
Here is what I say...
I'm going to sound like a clanging gong at some point, but I truly believe that the doctrine of union with Christ is such a crucial category missing from the current "What is gospel?" conversation.
It has not been a major factor in the dialogue between Gilbert, Bates, et al.
Death is the last enemy to be defeated.
And it will be. A deathless day is coming and it will go on forever.
Maranatha.
What a life, what a legacy.
Christ be praised for Keller’s life and the hope of resurrection.
Timothy J. Keller, husband, father, grandfather, mentor, friend, pastor, and scholar died this morning at home. Dad waited until he was alone with Mom. She kissed him on the forehead and he breathed his last breath. We take comfort in some of his last words...
On a recent episode of
@KnowingFaithPod
I was asked about how I read effectively.
For context:
*I’m a father of two under 6.
*I sleep well and don’t dip into sleep to maximize productivity.
*I’m a planter/pastor.
*I produce and host two podcasts.
I don’t have *lots* of time…
