Of great concern to all CDNs is how Hockey Canada’s actions might empower other NSOs to dismiss what CDNs want/need from sport. It reeks of impunity, friendship & protectionism. Doesn’t even make sense from a fiduciary duty perspective, let alone athlete safety or culture change.

All it took was the discovery of 2 secret sex abuse cover up funds, a govt inquiry, the PM + every single political party calling for removal, govt funding stopped + almost every single sponsor pulling out.

Now as a spokesperson for Gymnasts, reporters sometimes forget I’m also a product of this abusive sport system & a repository for young athletes’ stories of abuse. The burden is heavy. I really appreciate when journalists conduct the interview & f/up in a trauma informed manner.
Today I interviewed a victim/survivor of Larry Nassar, who shocked me when she said I was the first and only reporter to ever do a trauma-informed interview with her.

We can't stop until we figure out who is actually in charge. The new national crisis is realizing we've built a system with no one at the top. Literally no levers to ensure it's operating with integrity, equity, inclusion, safety and wellbeing as core values.

Unfortunately, for those who need a complaint mechanism the harm is already done and now they must take on the burden of being a complainant. How about prevention? How about we look into why the system enables abuse? Judicial inquiry.

I feel very grateful to the brave athletes and their council who stood their ground & saw the progress through. 🙏🏽💪
But to disrupt this incredibly toxic cycle of abuse, we must not let these perpetrators influence the next generation of coaches.
Also deeply concerned that Elvira can return to training coaches after 10 yrs. The panel determined her behaviour so awful that she is banned for life from contact with athletes. But she can return to train coaches to do the same?
Make it make sense.

I’m very sad about all the abuse announcements this week. Perhaps a modicum of justice for some, but still so much potential for harm - even with sanctions these abusers can move to different sports, teach piano or mentor Jr coaches. All the enablers still hold the power.

Seems like if 1000+ athletes AND the former federal sport minister, who initiated some of the earliest safe sport mechanisms, say NSOs are still failing & sport investigations don’t work, then maybe WE SHOULD LISTEN?
Sport organizations have failed to protect athletes for decades.
Internal investigations and buried reports do not work.
Once again, we have more evidence of the need for a public inquiry across sport.

NDAs for staff who are let go and would like their severance are also problematic bc often they have information that could keep athletes safe. No one should be obligated to keep quiet about wrongdoings. That’s unethical.
When National Sport Organizations (NSOs) are leaning on the media to not report stories you know there is a problem. Silencing athletes must be stopped.

Do these numbers seem even close to legit to you? Even with the very real risk of retribution, 500+ gymnast say they we abused and only 6 filed complaints over the past 4 yrs? Come on.
Sport Canada in 2018 began requiring national sports orgs that receive federal funding to report to the govt the number of harassment, abuse, and bullying complaints that each receives every year.
A total of 47 complaints filed with NSOs over the past 5 years.

has not chosen action anywhere close to zero tolerance for abuse. I resigned from the board in 2021 bc they named Lori Henderson to the Olympic team despite an unresolved abuse complaint. Since then I have been made aware of the most egregious cover-up that
Davydova is also an FIG WTC member, meaning she has official roles at Worlds and Olympics, serving as a member of the Superior Jury and Apparatus Supervisor, as well preparing judges' instructions.
It's difficult to see how CAN can allow her to be in Paris in this role ...
