RTÉ Director General; former Ofcom Group Director; Deputy Director-General & Managing Director, RTÉ News & Current Affairs, BBC News Channel Controller
@jaketapper
Jake - sadly you have misunderstood almost everything here. The status of Ofcom. The reason for the investigation. The value the audience puts on impartial and accurate news. Basically the facts.
I spent a fabulous five years working in Ireland for RTE, getting to know and love the country and the people. I was often asked if I had any Irish family connections/blood and said sadly not. Guess what- today I received my DNA results - and I am 5% Irish

I am genuinely confused on what basis you say this Andrew? Can you explain what you mean? I’m genuinely interested having spent 4 years as head of News at RTÉ - and also having enjoyed working with you at the BBC before that.
Nick was a hugely talented journalist; a popular and supportive colleague; a genuinely decent and kind man. There’s deep sadness from everyone who had the pleasure of working with him at RTÉ and his colleagues who I know at BBC Scotland
A sad day for all of us in the news2day family.
Nick Sheridan was a joy to work with, so creative and hardworking but also with a sense of fun and mischief which would brighten your day. He was kind, open-hearted and always curious, a really wonderful person.
Is it just me but very often when I’m reading a post,
@Twitter
keeps jolting away from it to newer posts? It’s a recent thing and infuriating - such a bad user experience

Happy St Patrick’s Day to all my Irish friends. It’s a strange one this year - but from the outside the generosity and spirit of the Irish people - and the calm early and decisive action of the Irish Government on Coronavirus are admirable

So sad to hear about the death of Peter Sissons.I had the great pleasure of working with him on the BBC 9 O'Clock News & BBC News Channel & on location in the US.A great journalist of huge integrity;a generous & charismatic man, deeply proud of his family
To be clear on this - given some of the commentary:
1. We expect due impartiality. 2. That means challenge; context; alternate views. 3. We are a post broadcast regulator. 4. We are in the run up to elections so political coverage is watched carefully.

It was interesting how over the years consistently the FAI tried to threaten and stop RTÉ from questioning their finances and the actions of individuals - including legal threats, giving interviews to other media only and targeting individual journalists

Looking at Twitter, the company seems to be losing some of the most important and talented people - including in content moderation and public policy.

Regulation is coming in the UK and the EU. I don’t understand the strategy.
#twitter
Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists.

It’s worth noting just how crucial a reliable range of news sources are in critical times like this: in the UK the BBC, ITN and Sky; many of the newspapers. RTÉ and Virgin News in Ireland and the papers.And quality journalism needs to be paid for and easily found too

My wife just got back a positive antibody test confirming she had Covid in March. She called the NHS to offer blood so they could use for plasma to treat other patients. She is 5'3" and slim - she was told she would have to weigh 13 stone to be eligible! 5'3" & 13 stone?!!
