Ph.D. Asst prof, Media Science,
@COMatBU
. Fan of cats, horror, post-punk, coffee. Researching sexting, swiping, + various other online behaviors. {she/her}
Paper rejected after three rounds of revision after more than a whole year because not one reviewer stuck with it for more than one round. :) Good system for early career researchers!!
My contribution to this discourse: Absolutely bought a Boston U sweatshirt, where I’ll be joining the faculty in the fall as an assistant professor of media science ✨ Excited for what is to come, grateful to SDSU for everything, and generally just so ready for this journey!
Ohio State: Graduated ✅
Next stop: South Dakota State U's School of Communication & Journalism, where I'll be an assistant professor in the fall ✨🥳

“I’m not sure why some of these analyses were included”
My brother in Christ, please read the response letter that outlines exactly why I did what the last reviewer asked me to do, plz
CONGRATS to my advisee
@kdcoduto
who defended her awesome dissertation mid-pandemic! Took this screenshot when her cat was sitting in & happened to catch Dr. Coduto in the middle of a boss I've-got-an-answer-for-that hairflip 😎
My favorite thing that happens when I teach research methods, and basic stats specifically, is a student looking at me VERY SUSPICIOUSLY while analyzing their data and saying, so hesitantly: “This is … kind of … cool …”
Spent part of this summer writing a manuscript that is very much a passion project and not exactly in my usual areas of study AND IT DIDN'T GET DESK REJECTED FROM A GOOD JOURNAL SO 🎉
Congratulations to COJO's Dr.
@kdcoduto
for her article titled "Comments vs. One-Click Reactions: Seeking and Perceiving Social Support on Social Network Sites" being published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media! 🐰🎉
So many congrats to Jadah, my advisee who successfully defended her thesis today ✨ I’m in awe of the grace and resilience she showed throughout this project, and I can’t wait to see where it ends up finding a home
Excited to present work on predictors of sexting behaviors (looking at differences between text + photo messaging) at
#ica23
and am feeling especially grateful for the high quality reviews/feedback I received this year 💫
NCA is great because I come home refreshed and motivated but the real reason I love it is because I love seeing all of my long distance friends in one place 😌
#NCA2022
Excited to share two projects about online dating during COVID-19, completed with Dr. Megan Vendemia, at
#ICA21
🎉 We investigated motivations for use, imagined interactions with potential partners, offline behaviors, & more - can't wait to discuss!
For my
@ICA_CAT
presentation with Dr. Megan Vendemia: Come for the insights about online dating motivations in a pandemic, stay for the Tinder profiles I made for my cats
Gave my practice job talk (!) today in
@OhioStateComm
's colloquium series, and by far the best part was getting feedback from so many smart, caring colleagues 😊
Didn't realize how much I missed in-person conferences until this past weekend--going to ride the high of

, reconnection, & motivation for a long time 🥰
Celebrating my advisee Emma today, who successfully defended her thesis on Facebook affordances, interpersonal surveillance, and relational dissolution 🤓 So proud of her and the journey she’s taken—even learning some stats along the way ✨
Excited to share a new study on perceptions of January 6th, looking at feelings from January 2021 to July 2021:
Perhaps most surprisingly: Perceptions of those involved became more positive from time 1 to time 2 (1/2)
If you need some winter break reading, might I suggest my latest with
@DrChip97
in the
@JoSoPerRel
? We looked at perceptions of listening in marriages, focusing on how spouses do (or don't!) listen in tough conversations:
One of my favorite things I’ve had the chance to do at

&
@JimHelland
— and am very excited to share this award with them & our whole team this year ✨
I would like to go back and tell first-year PhD student me that one day, not only will stats make sense, you will end up teaching stats to your own grad students. Truly anything is possible ✨

This whole experience was a delight, including super supportive, helpful reviewers ✨
Presented for the first time at

this morning--and certainly not the last! Lived my dream of talking about horror movies to a wonderful, engaged audience 👻

wow who would have ever guessed the edits I kept putting off for this manuscript would only end up taking 30 minutes to do, just shocked by this turn of events 😐
This week includes my favorite research methods activity: Making my students read a first draft of one of my papers eventually published with
@meganvendemia
. The first draft was… certainly a first draft 😜
I've been thinking about this piece a lot, in part as an academic who has moved around a lot and has lots of friends who have done the same thing--but I've also been thinking about it in terms of my research, particularly about compulsive use of social media.
1) It's hard to make new friends in your 30s
2) People report being 25% happier when they live close to friends
3) Family isn't enough to provide the robust safety net we crave
So why don't we live closer to our friends? Some theories:
tysm for all of the kind words and also so sorry for how many people have had similar experiences ♥️ this particular paper is back under review at a new journal 💫

I bought tickets to
@AFI
's Sing the Sorrow anniversary show while in the airport waiting to go to New Orleans for a conference and I can absolutely, confidently, truly say that I am the person 13-year-old me wanted to be.
Have a lot of thoughts on Elon buying Twitter, but mostly: What kind of person has $43 billion and blows it on a social media platform instead of doing literally anything else with it?
Last week an assistant professor of media science at Boston University worked with a market research company to survey 1,000 people about how they feel about online dating. Here are the results:
Days like today support my theory that Twitter is best for and during major events--it really is at its peak when we're all following something together.
I had the opportunity to contribute to this impressive volume, sharing thoughts on how listening in interpersonal conversations may influence our democracy in crisis
Thanks always to

Putting together a lecture on horror media and realized a new goal: Teach a course on final girls. A movie a week, each with a different final girl, analyzing how they reflect culture/time period/etc. 👻
In my comm theories class today,
@mhendwv
and I will be talking about social media verification, especially in breaking news situations. Opening this to all

On the new episode of
@IntheDemoPod
, PhD, author, researcher (and cool person!)
@kdcoduto
talks about apps, sexting and the impact on a generation of daters.
And thus, today, it is
@SDState
who got me back into this account... never once hearing from Twitter Support...
Except for one email, telling me they couldn't verify I was, indeed, me 🙃
The verified brand situation is getting out of control. Quick thread of twitter blue brands, and brands who might be pissed off at Elon right about now.
So, this account was hacked about 10 days ago. Someone was posting crypto bait + it was definitely not me. Allow me to tell you all the things Twitter did to help:
Just published in Sexuality & Culture: I looked into how perceived affordances related to outcomes from sexting, especially looking into how affordances might relate to feelings of self-esteem and sexual gratification
Get ready, you'll likely experience history today. Not even joking.
Today's high temperatures will be COLDER than the average high temperature of mid-JANUARY.
You can tell your friends we'll be over 30 degrees below the normal October 26th high temperature this afternoon.
