Early this morning I spoke with
@owenreidy
of
@irishcongress
and we agreed that we had to do something to allow ordinary citizens express their concern and solidarity.
I'm very proud and honoured to be elected
@irishcongress
President. We live in exciting times, full of possibility and opportunity, and we've an urgent responsibility to ensure we emerge from the pandemic with better jobs, better lives and a better planet.
#BDC21
#NoGoingBack
Today is my first day as
@forsa_union_ie
General Secretary. Looking forward to working with all our national, divisional, branch leaders and staff to achieve good outcomes for our members.
My piece, co-written with
@SIPTU
GS Joe Cunningham, in
@IrishTimes
. The response to
#COVID19
can't be austerity. We need hope. On a postwar scale. Trade unions and civil society can provide necessary leadership. Covid-19: Is the pandemic our ‘1945 moment’?
Classy of
@PresidentIRL
to do his
@RTELateLateShow
interview at the time of
#Covid19
in front of the plough and the stars, a piece commissioned to commemorate the 1913 lockout. He acknowledges essential workers and hopes that they'll be properly respected when the crisis is over.
An early start this morning to meet Brother Kevin
@capfrans
with
@forsa_union_ie
President Michael Smyth. On behalf of union members we were delighted to present him with a cheque for €10000 to support the Capuchin Day Centre and the incredible work of its staff and volunteers.
I'm in total admiration of our
@forsa_union_ie
members on strike this morning. These
@EnableIreland
workers in
#Cork
are not just standing up for justice for themselves but also for their services and the users who rely on them.
#ValuingCare
At a time when many of us feel hopeless and helpless we understand the value of solidarity. I'm exploring ways by which
@forsa_union_ie
members and the union itself can
#StandWithUkraine
through the provision of humanitarian aid.
We received this letter from
@unicefireland
yesterday in appreciation of
@forsa_union_ie
's donation of €100,000 to the Gaza emergency appeal before the UN resolution calling for a humanitarian truce and last night's communication and power blackout and Israeli bombardment.
Some of my
@forsa_union_ie
colleagues this afternoon delivering the now annual toy donation from the union staff to our wonderful neighbours
@TempleStreetHos
. Thanks also to those union branches that made a financial contribution.
Fórsa to donate €100,000 to the
@UNICEF
Gaza Crisis Emergency Appeal.
"The scale of the unfolding human catastrophe in Gaza demands a massive humanitarian response.
Almost half of Gaza’s population are children, more than 1,200 of whom have been killed." -
@kcallinan50
As I said this today on
@morningireland
immediate dialogue required on phased return to offices to address:
1. Genuine health concerns
2. Longstanding (almost 2 years) work/life balance issues
3. Securing benefit of popular and productive remote working.
Setting out how workers won't accept falling living standards in a booming economy with high corporate profits in so many areas, during my interview with
@mculld
on
@rtenews
Six One last night.
What are unions looking for in the public sector pay talks?
All workers, including public servants, need to make good the reduction in living standards that happened during a booming economy and huge corporate profits.
I'm writing in today's
@businessposthq
about
@forsa_union_ie
research conducted by
@eustace_et_al
to be published tomorrow which will show Ireland is an EU outlier when it comes to collective bargaining. How we respond will say a lot about the future direction for our country.
In today's
@businessposthq
Fórsa general secretary
@kcallinan50
on Ireland's need to boost worker bargaining rights, the dividends of such measures for workers and employers, underpinning better outcomes for society and the economy.
#CollectiveBenefit
Minister
@McHughJoeTD
, you claim to
#SupportOurSecretaries
and to understand their pay concern. Yet you offered them LESS than the projected cost of living for the next 4 years! Why won't you put them on the EXISTING pay scale to receive EQUAL treatment?
@forsa_union_ie
So proud to welcome my stepdaughter Lulu at an emotional evening in
#DublinAirport
. Great to see my former colleague
@loreillysf
there with the fantastic reception party greeting all those
#hometovote
.
Our
@forsa_union_ie
President
@Annemcgee2McGee
will struggle to get another reception like she received from the Lady Health Workers Union in Pakistan! I am so pleased that our union, through
@PSIglobalunion
, is helping these women fight for their basic rights.
Fair play to the
@forsa_union_ie
Galway branch for organising today's rally. I was delighted to support it. Great to see these workers standing up for their services.
#FundUsFairly
Community workers rally for 'fair pay' and more funding via
@rte
Advocating tax cuts as the solution to the
#CostOfLivingCrisis
in a country with a rapidly growing population and obvious deficits in public services is as dishonest as suggesting that every wish is affordable.
Collectively bargained pay and better services - not tax cuts.
Our President
@kcallinan50
tells
@thisweekrte
tax cuts are not the solution to reducing the high cost of living. We instead need EU levels of collective pay bargaining coverage and provision of publicly funded essential services.
I wrote to
@mmcgrathtd
today on behalf of
@forsa_union_ie
members who were appalled by the scurrilous remarks of his party colleague earlier in the week. I am pleased to see the Minister make this important statement.
5 weeks into my new job as Minister for Public Expenditure & Reform, I would like to thank civil and public servants for their hard work, especially over the last few challenging months.
@IRLDeptPER
While the travelling public might think that the post-covid hikes in air fares have been exorbitant, and citizens generally might view the company's profits as exorbitant, it's a bit much to describe workers efforts to defend living standards as exorbitant.
@AerLingus
@IALPA
Passengers could face major disruption to Aer Lingus services over the coming weeks after pilots at the airline voted by a large margin in favour of industrial action in a dispute over pay.
On a lighter note I felt the need to share how my nieces and nephew are responding to
#COVID
ー19 with the help of
@thebodycoach
#JoeWicksPE
#joewicks
. Apparently my brother-in-law almost had a heart attack!
Fórsa has achieved final confirmation that working time is to be restored to pre-austerity levels for most civil and public servants from 1st July.
A new civil service circular which was published yesterday, confirms details of the union-negotiated deal.
Today
@forsa_union_ie
is announcing that its members and branches are donating €500,000 in humanitarian aid for Ukraine to be equally split between
@irishredcross
and
@ituc
Ukraine solidarity fund. A phenomenal response. So proud of our union.
#StandWithUkraine
Such a long road just to get here. Many who have worked their whole careers will benefit very little if at all. Yet this is a big step forward. Just a shame that it has taken so long and such a struggle to get this much recognition. Only came about because of union organisation.
📢📢School secretaries have today voted overwhelmingly to accept a historic new package of pay and working conditions, which places them all on public service salary rates after a decades-long campaign for pay equity.
#SupportOurSecretaries
Minister
@McHughJoeTD
in the Dáil this evening acknowledges the work of
@forsa_union_ie
to address the confusion that had been created in relation to
#ourSNAs
. He confirms that the agreement with the union will determine the role.

I listened to our

In awe of the bravery of Isabella who is speaking out this morning on the precarity faced by content moderators in Ireland. We need to shine a spotlight on the outsourcing practices of big tech giants like Facebook, and how they use this model to sidestep their obligations.
It was my pleasure this morning to welcome our newest

Unions remain relevant in a pandemic world. The
@irishcongress
negotiated this protocol with government and employers. Lead worker representatives will have an important role in ensuring safe workplaces. If you're not in a union now is the time to join!
A ‘return to work safety protocol,’ agreed between unions, employers and the Government will underpin workers’ safety as staff migrate back to workplaces after working remotely in the opening weeks of the coronavirus crisis.

I addressed the
@forsa_union_ie
#Kildare
Health branch AGM this evening and called for public service talks to prioritise restoration of living standards. The current agreement Building Momentum clearly is not keeping pace with inflation.
The BIG issue at this week's
@forsa_union_ie
conference in
@GlenINECArena
will be the COST OF LIVING. Employers must respond with collectively bargained pay increases and government must seize the moment for transformative action on the social wage.
Our President
@kcallinan50
tells
@SaturdayRTE
together with collectively bargained pay increases to offset the effects of inflation, government can bring down the cost of living for workers by improving their Social Wage.

The new Public Service Agreement won't address the problem of low pay for new entrants. In the negotiations the government side refused to remove skipped points from pay scales. They can't have it both ways. Remove the 2011 lower entry points now as a matter of policy!
It was really good to hear this morning from

Opening his Budget speech
@Paschald
revealed a big increase in his department's forecast for 2023 inflation. Up from 3% to more than 7%! If this turns out to be the case, it will place huge importance and pressure on wage bargaining next year in the private and public sectors.
My reaction to
#Budget2021
1. It's our money, we'll have to repay it. 2. Effect on inequality is the key test. 3. Covid has made this worse. 4. Investment in public services is welcome because we all benefit. 5. But now we need a new deal for public servants.
@irishcongress

The winds of change are blowing in the US. It's time for action to ensure rights for Irish workers to organise, to be heard and to bargain. Or is the Irish government going to to sell a union free, low tax model to attract US foreign direct investment? We're better than that.
I believe every worker should have a real opportunity to organize and collectively bargain. That’s why today, I established a White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment — helping empower workers to make the right choice for themselves and their families.
Today, the
