My annoyed girlfriend over dinner this evening: “design Twitter spilled into the real world today regarding this CIA branding thing, don’t most those designers work at FB, Instagram, Google? Like you ALL work for the CIA”
I recently codified my thoughts on a framework for speaking about product design projects. I don't think there's a one size fits all approach to these things, every company is looking for something different but would love to hear others thoughts.
I thought desk-core died with the pandemic but glad to hear it is alive and well. A lot of you asked for details here are the important bits:
The desktop: 2 sheets of architectural grade plywood fused together, finished with a matte clear coat as to look unfinished but feel
Its been 1 year since I joined
@shop
@shopify
and w/o getting all sappy I just wanna say: its the best company w/ the best people and one of the MOST talented design teams We’re building something pretty damn rad and if ur bored/sad at your current spot I invite you to join us
So proud of the work from
@shop

(we're hiring by the way)
If you're passionate about prototyping and deep level craft, drop us a note .
We're also looking for folks who are pushing the boundaries on web!
We just shipped some awesome new visual and interaction details in the
@shop
app and I wanted to highlight a couple of my favourite pieces. We prototyped these in
@FacebookOrigami
and were able to translate them 1 to 1. Shoutout to our amazing dev team 👏
Unknowingly showed up with the Elizabeth Holmes starter pack to work today:
1. Was sick last week so my voice is low and raspy
2. Wore a black turtle neck
🤣
👋Today is my last day at ClassPass, it’s been a fantastic experience with one of the strongest teams I’ve had the opportunity to work with.
👀I’m looking forward to the future and in the meantime am considering taking on a few projects.
🎈Working on something fun?
Note to EV designers:
No, electric cars don’t “need” a grill for engine air intake, but that doesn’t mean we have to get rid of them. The front of all EVs look like Voldemort right now lol.
I was on my very first podcast. There's an accompanying video meaning my penchant for talking with my hands is fully captured 😄
Pleasure talking with host
@LolaOye
and colleague
@elefontpress
about all things
@shop
and
@ShopifyUX
A few months ago
@postcarl
@jericksondesign
and myself sat down to talk about why being design driven as a product organization makes sense for us
@shop
and
@Shopify
@ShopifyUX
I turned it into a 4 episode video series we released internally. Here’s a peek at episode 1 👀
Happy to share that on Monday I joined the team
@classpass
where I’ll be supporting the talented product design team. (And were growing! Hiring senior product designers and researchers!)
Life update: A week ago we decided to pack up our life in NYC and move to the countryside. Not sure what’s next but we’re enjoying the scenery in the meantime.
Yesterday was one of the most challenging days in my career. COVID-19 has had a catastrophic impact on our business and yesterday ClassPass had to furlough/layoff half of the company. I want to find these talented people great teams to join. Pleas RT
I’m excited to share that I’m now working with the
@shop
team at
@Shopify
helping shape the future of...you guessed it: Shopping. We’re excited to do shopping right: mobile first, merchant focused, helping buyers fall in love with new brands.
Grateful for the opportunity to reflect on a bunch of things that are on my mind and give love to the people who inspire me the most. Thanks
@theloversmag
“I learned there were people who called themselves designers, who like me, were displeased with the world around them and wanted to create something better.” ✨

The
@shop
design team had a bit of a schedule conflict with Config this year on account of
@Shopify
Summit but we had a great time 🔥 So fun to hang with this amazing team IRL
Say 'hello' to your new shopping BFF: the
@Shop
app's ChatGPT powered assistant is ready to talk products, trends, and maybe even the meaning of life 🤖
I’m feeling that 2010s energy right now:
⚫️ New UI paradigms coming out of the woodwork
⚫️New technologies
⚫️ One layer design challenges lol
⚫️ Dope communities popping up like Posts from

Design is kinda getting fun again
Me: feeling vulnerable, deciding to tweet a practical thought about how to talk about the work we do and it’s deep impact on organizations big and small.
Everyone:
The Ace Hotel was so clearly designed by men for men it it’s comical. No storage, no shelves, no surfaces. So I just hang my clothes from hooks like I’m in a freshman dorm? Cool.
Volunteering at the non-profit community barn where I'm learning to ride horses by doing some gR^fik diZajn and it was so...relaxing, peaceful. Nice to make things when it's not about work. Many of you get this already lol.
It would absolutely be my karma to rip on crypto fanatics, then have my first tweet about crypto go viral and as a result have people on twitter thinking I’m a crypto nut 🤌
Hardest part about moving back to Seattle after living in NY for 8 years?
No breakfast sandwich culture. I called a spot to order a ham, egg and cheese on a bagel and the dude was like “we don’t have ham or bagels. I just hung up 🤦♀️
After almost 5 years I will be moving on from Artsy. It’s been an amazing ride, flowing between design and product work. I’m humbled to have worked on some amazing projects with such incredible people. Thank you
@robertlenne
@petrov_ani
@devangt
@alloy
and many more
When asked to bring our chat based shopping ai to the web I said "we can do better." Introducing a shopping copilot with a visual canvas to help you shop with ease. Designed with love, built with passion, all done in one week. This team is on 🔥

I'm pouring one out today for
@totokaelo
which is closing it's doors. It started as a boutique in Seattle that was one of the only stores in the city that had a unique point of view. From the infamous shoe wall to the mens department, it was a bright light in a sea of Patagonia.
I think the pendulum swung to far in showing every step of the design process. Here's to all the sizzle-forward portfolios I'm seeing from various designers, this one is pretty dope.
🎉 My new portfolio is out. 🚀. After a long-awaited update, I’m excited to unveil it. It’s been way too long since my last update in 2016 👇
Sound ON 🎵
More details in the thread 🧵
Users rarely have “problems”. They have:
1. Stuff they gotta to do
2. Stuff they wanna do
Maybe if we stopped making everything into a “problem” we can make the stuff people gotta do and wanna do more interesting, maybe even fun 🎈
He walked so Apple could run! Huge, huge amount of gratitude to
@joeyabanks
for years of relentless work to make designing software for Apple products seamless 👏
I think HE deserved an Apple design award
I know this is like a FINALLY, but we’d be remiss to not thank
@joeyabanks
for all the amazing work he’s done creating UI kits for the community. Thank you!!!
2yrs
@Shopify
@shop
and I’ve gone from being late/sus about the newest thing on the horizon to building on the horizon 🌅
Can’t say I ever expected to find myself here but when you’re surrounded by so many 🧠 people it just makes you wanna jump in 💜
Very cool, very excited to be apart of this launch
@shop
. It broke my brain at times but I think that’s what it’s supposed to feel like when you do something truly new. Come one, come all
@ShopifyDevs
...
You’ve all heard by now, 20% of my colleagues let go from Shopify today. These are fantastic, talented people. If you’re looking for designers, eng, product folks please dm me if you’re hiring would love to connect you to them.
Wow...I think we are all WELL aware but
@browsercompany
is literally doing THE MOST when it comes to fixing everything that is completely backwards about web browsing. Thanks for letting me test drive 🏎
Designers: craft is back fuck yea!
Also designers: You’re not allowed to engage in critique about craft
Like it can be both. You can know craft isn’t a differentiator for products like Open AI or Spotify AND still talk about where craft is lacking and could be better.
I hate to upset anyone for whom this is news to but:
Recruiters are _rarely_ emailing you personally. Candidates are sourced en mass, automated campaigns meant to look personal are deployed.
Your beef with a “recruiter” is 9/10 beef with an entire hiring apparatus.
Yes. This is what design shaping strategy means. This is how we work
@shop
and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s not for every designer but it’s an incredibly empowering environment to work in.
alignment on strategy (best aided by design, where a thoughtful prototype can have the impact of 100 meetings) is the hot knife through the butter of bureaucracy. it’s remarkable how well teams work together - and how hard they work - when everyone sees and feels the opportunity.
Very excited to share the new wordmark I created for
@outmagazine
in order to celebrate the new direction of the publication, lead by their new editor-in-chief
@pfpicardi
.
I’m sorry to report but…
98% of custom fonts in apps look like absolute garbage. Unless you’ve paid a foundry $$$$ to spend the hours perfecting it, it’s just…not cute.
We’ve shipped some great updates to Shop App, including expanding our customization options so you can make your mobile storefront look perfect for your brand.
See this is why you don’t return to work on a Monday after a long break...I’m heading back tomorrow, letting all the kinks work themselves out before I head back lol.
401 Broadway: easily one of the most legendary workspaces in New York. An unassuming family owned building that has one of the most spectacular views of the city. I miss it 🖤
Artists didn’t stop painting after the camera was invented. Technology has never been able to usurp art.
Artists will use AI to generate images to critique itself, etc. The alarmist view of what AI will do to creativity is honestly baffling to me.
The team has been hard at work evolving
@shop
’s story and I’m so thrilled to share it with all of you. Huge shout out to
@_LindsayCraig
@maxkaplun
and the rest of the team for all the love put into this
Catching up on reading and finally got to this piece from
@davidhoang
. Technology’s is wonderful, AI is mind bending…you know what is constant? The desirability of things made with good taste. Taste is the differentiator, always has been always will be
Repeat this slowly:
WFH is not a content marketing opportunity. WFH is not a content marketing opportunity. WFH is not a content marketing opportunity. WFH is not a content marketing opportunity.
I don’t have the receipts to prove that I called indoor football boots becoming a luxury look but calling this one now:
luge and cold weather surf boots will goin the luxury tech footwear category…
Small build on this: The pendulum is swinging and its swinging pretty hard in some places. I don't think this suddenly becomes about silly hustle culture either or if you work on a Sunday...
At the end of the day it's just about caring more. That's always been an innate driver
I’m honestly very, very encouraged by this. Agree that it makes for a bit of an awkward adjustment period for some but coming from startups to working at a larger company the reorientation back to building fast with ambition is so, so welcome.

Between this from
@jack
& the recent changes at Airbnb from
@bchesky
It’s clear that people are getting their fire back. That there’s work to be done. That we have to go through some awkward & hard decisions to get us reoriented around the work.
Have been very inspired by this!

People need to learn to engage with stuff like this as a philosophical provocation not a personal one. Like on a philosophical level I’m not sure I disagree ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So excited to be able to introduce you to all of my amazing colleagues on the
@shop
design team and to have a place to continue to share what makes working on
@shop
so damn fun 😄
Super hyped to welcome the Shop Design team ✨
Learn what it means for them to be a design driven organization and check out some of their bootleg Lisa Simpson drawings!
No matter how long you’ve worked or however many places, the first brand and company you really invested in will always feel part of you. I noticed today
@artsy
switched from purple to blue and I’m unreasonably upset lol.
This the trajectory I love to see. Prioritize building beautiful, quality products people want and you’ll find yourself making the decisions that propel a business forward (not the other way around) cheers

Excited to step into a new role as CPO at
@avara
. Despite my brief time here post-acquisition of
@family
, we’ve made significant progress across several products. Excited about this expanded scope. P.S. We're hiring!
Every week that goes by we get closer to this. This is where we're is going. AI and AR coming together, not to block out the world, but to light it up 🌟
