want to scream every time I read about this woman that went to an expensive liberal arts college and married a small business owner being described as “blue collar” because she wears overalls or whatever
yesterday a Palestinian woman walked in to the
@eonforassembly
office bc she and her daughter were going around dropping off ceasefire signs. Turns out she knows the Yemeni family that runs the deli next door, so she called them over to see how they could all help the campaign
@transscribe
it’s not just opinion. Michael Powell used activist in this article like six times to describe anyone sympathetic to trans people and characterized Kathleen Stock as a leftist and a feminist
@powellnyt
@emilybazelon
@mega2e
@DouthatNYT
any person not entirely consumed by trans panic like you and your friends would find it discomforting that NYT writes the same "have the trans activists gone too far" article literally every week
I think anyone who is hesitant about congestion pricing because it may impact working people should think about who are the 1.4% of people in Rep. Walker's Brownsville district that she is siding with against the 93% that take public transit and why.
1.4% of Assembly Rep. Walker's constituents would have had to pay the congestion pricing fee. Just 7% of Manhattan CBD commuters in her district drive while 93% take transit. The overwhelming majority of households in her district don't even own cars.
@ebruenig
I went to the same DFW public schools as you and I not only think that abortion should be legal and so do all of my Texas friends but I think it's pathetic how much you lean on that part of your background despite going to Ivies/Oxford and working in elite media for decades.
the Palestinian woman had a family member who was a state legislator in Illinois and she said AIPAC had spent tons of money to unseat him. I said yeah they have money but we have people and she was like EXACTLY.
Several of them ended up downloading Reach to contact their friends and family in the neighborhood, they talked to the campaign manager about what mosques Eon was visiting, and they took lit to hand out themselves.
Anyway I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing and it’s tiny example of us coming together to oppose genocide. As I was biking to away I told her I was going to canvass for another ceasefire candidate and she asked who and I said
@claireforqueens
!
the dissonance between showing these simpson's monorail renderings at a press conference while my neighborhood pool was half closed all summer because they don't hire enough lifeguards...remarkable work governor
@tomscocca
not sure how this fits into my preconceived narrative that it was the house cleaners that are mad at woke philosophy professors that came out for trump
@Vanessa_ABee
@curaffairs
maybe no one reads harpers anymore (wonder why) but in last months issue he compared being roasted on the internet to being stoned to death
i was on this street and no one was even doing anything except standing around but then like forty cops came storming through, shoving everyone that wasn’t running away (i got a little shove for not walking fast enough)
Update: Got her permission with a fuck yeah. The cop pushed her so hard at Barclays & she flung back. She is tiny. Now she’s in the ER after a serious seizure. I’m waiting for updates but have to wait outside because of COVID-19. Please keep my protest sister in your thoughts.
@Yascha_Mounk
i'm so glad you were able to get at least one iraq war criminal on board, him being an editor at the atlantic is just not a big enough platform. he deserves this
@LLW902
@hayleyglyphs
right I think there is a valid conversation to have about Chu's rhetorical approach but I don't think a cis person who opens her essay with how she has a mole on her face before talking about how many people get fillers is really moving it forward.
@RottenInDenmark
@buckywthegdhair
the "just asking questions" brigade gets mad that we won't take their questions seriously, but that's because their questions ignore the fact that doctors have been answering those questions for thirty years and we already know the answers. they wanna start over at square one
@unbenji
@thrasherxy
@chasestrangio
people asking the questions about trans kids ignore that doctors have been working on answering these questions for thirty years. the "just asking questions" brigade wants us all to start at square one again as if we don't already know the facts, but we do, even if they don't.
@Vanessa_ABee
i think there’s an unconscious assumption with a lot of these takes that the members of the groups described by the new
language are all educated white people because that’s all they interact with. i.e. a trans person in yglesias’ head is always a white person that went to Bard
This is true at public courts across the city! A guy with a shitty tennis app outbid lots of tennis coaches that have helped courts run for years and he contracts the actual teaching out to coaches willing to work for low pay. Middlemen with capital taking over public resources
Community cornerstone Coach Frances secured us these brand-new tennis courts. Then someone showed up at the last minute and bought the rights to teach lessons. Help us help her out!
@chasestrangio
and i get that warren speaks the language more frequently and probably fluently now but she was wrong on hrt for prisoners when she was running for senate
daily harvest scandal hits all the right notes for me to be fascinated: influencers, unregulated startups flying a little too close to the sun, people eating gross looking food
@graceelavery
@AbigailShrier
I think even this concedes too much to the free speech losers - are trans children "often" treated with puberty blockers?
@shonfaye
's article in Vice says that only 267 people under 15 yrs have even been able to obtain that treatment.
going on a bunch of interviews recently helped me articulate my habits and ideas about being an engineer so here's one I wrote down about hows testing helps me work better
having fun on the neighborhood facebook page watching someone get roasted for trying to rent out the ground floor 1BR of their brownstone for $4850/month
@NeeNeinNyetNo
I’ve heard “I joined after aoc” multiple times on solidarity dues phone banks. One of the state senate candidates in nyc has also said it multiple times, that she showed socialists of color can win. Have you ever phone banked members and asked them why they joined?
when I was in college my Dad was let go from a BIG EVIL fossil fuel company and he was given a year of salary and benefits. Meanwhile the wokest company in tech offered one month of severance to someone that has worked there for six years. I wonder why they're unionizing???
clicked through on what he cited here for the "rapid, massive increase" in trans youth and turns out it's a one sheeter from in 2017 and an article from psychology today that prompted dozens of MDs to write an a letter refuting it
2:30pm and there's already multiple NYPD helicopters over central brooklyn. If anything it feels NYPD presence is escalating here. It's impossible to overstate how much it feels like
@NYCMayor
has just handed over control of the entire city to the police.
@transscribe
agreed, but he certainly doesn’t think of himself that way. he genuinely seems to think he is speaking truth to power or being objective or something
@kept_simple
@Vanessa_ABee
underrated part of his substack tantrums is he's become the kind of guy that retweets VC thought leaders unironically and has become the biggest booster of a company that the worst silicon valley goons might make millions off of.
@KathaPollitt
@NinaBernstein1
@mashagessen
@NewYorker
but the Keira B case isn’t being used to ask for better counseling. it’s being used by people like Shrier to spread a moral panic that girls are brainwashed by youtube and the UK court just halted treatment entirely for teens.
She’s literally calling for a shitty media men list for people whose political opinions she disagrees with by recruiting others to do the dirty work of snitching lmao smdh
@KathaPollitt
@NinaBernstein1
@mashagessen
@NewYorker
if you want better counseling then advocate for better funding for a clinic that has thousands of people on a waiting list instead of taking away treatment from the vast majority who need it.
maddening to be governed by such mediocrities that clearly have zero interest in any of this. take your crypto money and retire and stop making our lives worse!
Kirsten Gillibrand is on
@BrianLehrer
pitching alternatives to congestion pricing's clean-air benefits, suggests 20 years to build "hubs" outside the city where people could park their cars & take the train, a concept more popularly known as "parking lots at train stations"
As president, I'll turn the East Room into an open office plan, where I’ll sit with our team.
I’ll use the Oval Office for some official functions – never for tweeting – but the rest of the time, I’ll be where a leader should be: with the team.
cannot get over this nyt picture of a VC agonizing over how he's going to vote for Trump if Bernie is the nominee. incredible stuff, must be a really tough choice for him
@thomaschattwill
@kthalps
@mtaibbi
and
@mtaibbi
you asking "why are people filled with rage" about disagreements becomes even more ridiculous in this context, it's tone policing when trans people don't even have a voice in the room, much less sitting at the table.
one nice thing about these is how friendly most people are when they realize they're talking to another DSA member. I think it's easy to forget that a lot of people don't actually get to do that very much, so when they realize it they're happy and eager to chat about everything
@conor64
“non members of group x are not afraid to generalize about group x when they are in a controlled setting where no members of group x are allowed”
@Vanessa_ABee
but of course plenty of working class non white people have disabled, trans, etc people in their family and friends and probably have no trouble dealing with the language. yglesias or the red scare girls or greenwald or whoever just literally never encounters those people
went to Kosciuszko Pool this week and happy to report it was 100% open for the first time since at least 2022. Also happy to report it has not eroded my contempt for our Mayor even slightly
@KathaPollitt
@NinaBernstein1
@mashagessen
@NewYorker
there’s an assumption in your question that doctors don’t want to be as cautious as they can already, or that trans people don’t want doctors to be cautious. of course everyone wants that, who wouldn’t?
@RosieDuffield1
@PeterTatchell
@StrikeBack2024
rosie you are in a cult and you need to step back from it. why are you obsessed with this issue that has nothing to do with you and requires you to be allies with the far right?
@transscribe
Tons of trans people in NYC get surgeries from socialized medicine because the Medicaid coverage is generous. I’m pretty sure lots of people
move here specifically for that reason. Socialized medicine is already helping trans people, I don’t know what you’re doing here.
paul graham, peter thiel, other libertarian VCs spent decades undermining confidence in government's ability to provide services and promoting startups (in which they have financial interest) as a more efficient alternative
when the pandemic hits: "ah no I didn't mean that part"
I favor small government, but not so small that it can't respond to a pandemic. Dealing with pandemics is exactly the sort of thing a good federal government should be able to do.
Fun dynamic emerging in prospect heights where if you own a struggling business on washington, vanderbilt open streets is to blame (everyone is enjoying vanderbilt). HOWEVER, if you own a struggling business on vanderbilt, open streets is also to blame (can’t drive on vanderbilt)
@JonahFurman
@dsacathcaucus
the strongest incentive we have may be that she loves the celebrity and the golden parachute life doesn't really provide it
Journalists used to have a monopoly on the news. This power bred restraint; whatever their private feelings, they avoided overt personal attacks. Now this power and the consequent restraint are both evaporating. Now they're just Twitter users.
deblasio's complete inability to provide internet for low income people during the pandemic should be more of a scandal. kids are trying to go to zoom school with tablets on data plans
Homeownership is remarkable because even if people around you have drowned in their own homes because of laws against apartments you can still find reasons to be like welll that doesn’t mean we should do anything drastic like legalize apartments
This is pretty wild. There was pushback from some individual lawmakers on Hochul's basement apartment plan in NYC.
So a new pilot program applies ... only in very targeted parts of Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
@EricLondonSEP
@AOC
@DemSocialists
love to find sinister implications in the fact that Democratic Left is a quarterly magazine instead of monthly. good journalism eric
I've seen a lot of managers-in-tech conversations about the "right" way to fire people and the right way to fire people is to give a ton of severance to the person whose life you are completely upending. It's actually quite simple, but basically no tech companies do it.
@thomaschattwill
@kthalps
@mtaibbi
you said that there were some people that were beyond the pale to add to the letter, so it's a matter of where you chose to draw the line? You drew it in a place where you had several ppl who've been accused of being transphobic and your one trans signatory that I know of dropped
the NYC open streets is the closest thing anything has felt to the kind of simple fun with other people that was constantly happening before the pandemic and for that reason I am just waiting for Mayor DeBlasio to shut it down
There are a bunch of dudes in the Downtown Brooklyn Marriott with long guns gearing up.
I asked if they were US military and they said no. None would not say what organization they were with.
Heads up to the

@rabois
@isosteph
@bayes_baes
hey keith which emotion was it that motivated you to stand outside that professors dorm yelling that you hoped he died of aids?
@ggreenwald
@PAWGsForBernie
you printed misinformation about trans people in order to spread a moral panic in one of your very first substack posts. I emailed you about it literally dozens of times with data about how it's not true and you've chosen not to correct it
clicked through on what he cited here for the "rapid, massive increase" in trans youth and turns out it's a one sheeter from in 2017 and an article from psychology today that prompted dozens of MDs to write an a letter refuting it
@CliffConnolly
@_citoyenne
the point is no one views the socialist movement as a career field to get high paying staffer jobs. that’s a straw man. comparing it to one other job, yours, doesn’t change that. many of the staffers are paid drastically less than what they would be elsewhere and do more work
@graceelavery
@AbigailShrier
@shonfaye
only harping on this because Greenwald fully embraced the trans panic stuff in his post last week and his sources to justify it were hilarious
clicked through on what he cited here for the "rapid, massive increase" in trans youth and turns out it's a one sheeter from in 2017 and an article from psychology today that prompted dozens of MDs to write an a letter refuting it
watching rich old anti woke guys like
@paulg

@mtaibbi
screech about FREEDOM because target isn't selling some random lady's trans panic book feels like watching evangelicals in the 90s protesting bc Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are witchcraft or whatever. no one cares paul
