@LCortesRomero
Thank you for sharing this. It’s tragic that our immigration policies keep families separated for so long but I’m glad you made this happen.
When I became a permanent resident in the late 1980s, the application fee was $60. Under the new Trump Admin proposal, it will be $1,120. When I became a citizen in 1994, the application fee was $95. The administration wants to make it $1,170. More bricks in the "virtual" wall.
STORY: The Trump administration on Friday proposed an unprecedented series of new fees for asylum-seekers and immigrants hoping to stay in the US, aiming to become one of just four countries in the world to charge for an asylum application.
Important thread on the death of Johana Medina. So much to be angry about, including the fact that ICE says she “illegally” entered the U.S. in the same paragraph they say she presented herself at a port of entry. It shows that ICE sees all forms of seeking asylum as suspect.
Thread after spending this afternoon at
@CBP
port of entry in Blaine, WA following up on reports of US citizens and permanent residents subjected to extensive questioning & delays. Bottom-line: despite CBP denials, this was definitely happening, though today was less egregious 1/
Proud to have
@RepJayapal
as my representative but also to share with her the experience of being a parent who cares deeply and will fight to ensure that our children--and indeed ALL children--are free to be who they are.
During
@HouseJudiciary
today, I shared why the
#EqualityAct
is so personal to me and my family. My child is finally free to be who they are. With that freedom comes a responsibility, for us as legislators, to legislate with love and not fear.
I am pleased that
@FLCourts
confirms that Amendment 4 requires fines, fees & restitution be paid to victims before their voting rights may be restored. Voting is a privilege that should not be taken lightly, and I am obligated to faithfully implement Amendment 4 as it is defined.
@CBP
@CBP
claims that they were not "detaining" people but this is only true if you define "detain" to mean only to be placed in a locked room. These individuals were in a waiting area and could walk to the parking lot but were not free to go: 3/
Social media posts that CBP is detaining Iranian-Americans and refusing their entry into the U.S. because of their country of origin are false. Reports that DHS/CBP has issued a related directive are also false.
Dear friends and neighbors,
We did it!
I am honored and humbled that District 4 voters have placed their trust in me, and I look forward to serving them as their next King County Councilmember. My full statement on the election results is here. 1/3
@CBP
Most of all, I wanted to share what I saw and confirm that
@CBP
was in fact engaged in a pattern of detaining (as in not letting into the country) Iranian-Americans for clearly extended periods of time in the past 36 hours. 7/7
@JuddLegum
The irony of course is that conservatives supported the bill because of a change that they thought would favor white immigrants, but which ended up having the opposite effect...
@CBP
They were not being allowed to enter the U.S. (their only home) and CBP was holding their passports so they couldn't back to Canada even if they had wanted to. So yes, they were detained. The people I made contact there were held up for questioning for as long as 2 1/2 hours. /4
Earlier today, after almost 17 years, I left the offices of
@NWIRP
for the last time as a staff member. I have been so fortunate to be part of the amazing community that is Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and was privileged to get to lead it for the past 15 years. 1/5
@CBP
By the time I left late, all the people I had been in touch with had been allowed to continue their travels. I certainly had memories of Jan. 2017 and SeaTac airport when Muslim Ban first implemented. Had to improvise w/ a hand-made sign to let people know help was available. 6/
First day at my new job. Grateful to the residents of District 4 for giving me the honor of representing them on the
@KCCouncil
. Much more work ahead but excited to tackle it.
It's deeply troubling that
@POTUS
is considering agreeing to changes that would drastically restrict the right to seek asylum in the U.S. and bring back Trump-era policies he once rightly condemned. I urge
@PattyMurray
and
@SenatorCantwell
to oppose these proposals.
#SaveAsylum
NEWS — The Biden administration has indicated to Congress that it's open to a new Title 42-like border authority to expel migrants without asylum screenings, as well as an expansion of immigration detention and deportations, to get GOP to back Ukraine aid.
@CBP
But this wasn't as bad as it was last night. This evening I spoke to a permanent resident who spent 11 hrs at this "secondary screening" overnight along w/ 40+ others. The only issue they all had in common (despite all being US citizens or LPRs) was their place of birth: Iran 5/
Washington State hit a distressing milestone today: we now have more confirmed
#COVID19
cases among Latinx community members here than among any other racial or ethnic group. This despite the fact that Latinx people are only 13% of the population (and white people are 68%).
I am honored and humbled that the latest primary results show that the majority of voters in District 4 (50.3%) chose to support our campaign for King County Council. So grateful for this amazing show of support. We know votes remain to be counted but look forward to the general.
@CBP
Arrived around 1P, met w/ three families who had ties to Iran; two were US citizens, the other LPRs. There were likely others there but wasn't able to talk to all of them. One couple noted that there had been more families there earlier, one had been held up for several hours 2/
I am excited to share news of our campaign kickoff event on Thursday, June 1 from 5:30-7:00 P.M. at
@RoughTumblePub
in Ballard. We will be joined by two special guests I respect and admire so much,
@PramilaJayapal
and
@TeresaCMosqueda
. I hope you can join us. RSVP info below.
I'm honored to announce my candidacy for King County Council, District 4! I'm running because I believe that, together, we can build a stronger and more just future for all families in King County. Learn more and support our campaign here:
I'm grateful to the residents of District 4 for entrusting me with the responsibility of representing them on the
@KCCouncil
. I pledge to work hard over the next three years to make our county a stronger, healthier, and more equitable community.
Jorge L. Barón was sworn in today as King County District 4’s new councilmember. History was made as two Latino councilmembers joined the Council for the first time. Congratulations Councilmember Barón!
@jorgebaron
Great work by a lot of people around the country paid off yesterday w/ big decisions blocking the indefinite detention of children, the illegal use of ICE detainers, & the expansion of expedited removal. Thanks to the courageous clients & dedicated legal teams who made it happen.
Listening to 11 federal judges asking all these questions to try to understand the intricacies of immigration law is the best example of why a child should not be required to figure this out without an attorney.
My colleague Matt Adams will appear before the U.S. Supreme Court tomorrow morning. While we are honored to represent our clients in this case, it's profoundly disappointing that the Biden Administration will be asking
#SCOTUS
to allow ICE to detain people indefinitely.
Tomorrow's hearing at the
@USSupremeCourt
with
@ACLU_SoCal
will have a long lasting impact on the rights of immigrants in detention. And the Biden administration is decidedly on the wrong side of this fight.
Just wrapped up our last get-out-the-vote session. It’s all up to the voters now. Whatever the outcome, it’s an honor to be able to run for elected office. Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort.
How about the FARMWORKERS who are at the very beginning of the food supply line? Inconvenient to mention them I guess since the majority are undocumented and you’re trying to deport them.
@UFWupdates
America owes our very hard working food supply workers so much as they produce and deliver high quality food for us during this horrible COVID-19. Join me in thanking our Farmers, Ranchers, Processors, Distributors and Stores!
@JohnBoozman
In case you needed a reminder of what's at stake tomorrow, here's what the
@TheJusticeDept
and
@SecNielsen
were busy doing today: asking the Supreme Court to short-circuit the regular appeal process so they can terminate
#DACA
as soon as possible.
Send love and gratitude to our great American farmers, ranchers, truckers, grocers and stockers.
Thanks to these heroes, and many more, our U.S. food supply chain remains strong!
BREAKING: The Ninth Circuit denied the Trump administration’s request to reinstate its asylum ban in our lawsuit.
The decision to keep the ban blocked is consistent with the laws made by Congress and will save lives.
I've been voting since I became a U.S. citizen in 1994, but today was the first time I was able to vote for myself! I'm grateful that our vote-by-mail system makes it so easy. Please get your ballots in by August 1. If you're in King Co. District 4, I hope to earn your support.
Deeply grateful to the voters of King County District 4 for their strong support for our campaign in this first batch of results. We know more votes remain to be counted but we are thrilled with the outstanding support we've received so far. Thank you!
It’s unfathomable that after all the pain we have seen in the past year, some people still refuse to wear masks. But it’s even worse that some of them are our political leaders, putting people at risk. Wishing my awesome representative
@RepJayapal
a speedy recovery.
I just received a positive COVID-19 test result after being locked down in a secured room at the Capitol where several Republicans not only cruelly refused to wear a mask but recklessly mocked colleagues and staff who offered them one.
I can vouch for this. Have been working with several parents in Seattle area whose children were detained by ORR, including at Tornillo. It’s taken months for them to be released to their parents.
There are 1,300 kids ready to leave to live with sponsors who have already been identified. But these children remain at Tornillo each day because this administration has deliberately prolonged the process of releasing them.
I am grateful that my councilmembers,
@TeresaCMosqueda
and
@LewisforSeattle
, voted against the proposed ordinance before the
@SeattleCouncil
today. But now that that vote is complete, I hope we can focus on scaling up evidence-based strategies, as outlined by
@lisadaugaard
below.
Guest columnist Lisa Daugaard argues that whatever happens with next week's vote on a Seattle ban on public drug use and possession, the city needs to take action to implement smarter drug policies. New

Inspired by our client
@MohanadElshieky
who is standing up and pushing back against
@CBP
’s unlawful actions. And yes, this is
@NWIRP
’s second lawsuit against
@CBP
in 48 hours. When you keep violating people’s civil rights, you’re going to keep getting sued.
“I hope that by raising my voice against the Border Patrol’s activities... others traveling on Greyhound will have their rights respected and will not have to suffer the same indignities and trauma that I did."
@MohanadElshieky
It was great to connect with State Representative Darya Farivar and her mom at today's Seattle Pride Parade. And even more exciting to learn that Rep. Farivar is endorsing my campaign for King County Council, District 4. Thank you so much for your leadership and your support!
As a candidate, it is important to me that my campaign is not funded by fossil fuel industry profits. I am therefore proud to sign the
#NoFossilFuelMoney
pledge.
King County friends: as of this morning,
@kcelections
is reporting that only 14% of registered voters have voted in the primary election, with 4 days to go before the August 1 deadline. If you have not already voted, please do before Tuesday. If you have, please remind 5 friends.
Washington State friends:
The U.S. Senate is considering agreeing to Republican demands of "drastic border and asylum restrictions" (see below). I urge you to call
@PattyMurray
at 1-866-481-9186 and
@SenatorCantwell
at 202-224-3441 and ask them to oppose any such proposals.
New — The drastic border and asylum restrictions considered by President Biden reflect a seismic political shift on immigration.
It's a shift that would've been unthinkable 3 years ago, when Biden promised to "restore" the asylum system.

Governors of both NJ & WA have found that it is urgent for people to stay home and non-essential businesses to close due to
#COVID19
. Yet
@DOJ_EOIR
just announced that immigration courts in both states are reopening. Deportations are apparently more important than public health.
Deeply troubled (but sadly not surprised) that the Supreme Court has again sided with the government’s position and allowed thousands more to be detained without even the chance of contesting their detention at a bond hearing. But proud of
@NWIRP
and our partners for this fight.
In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of an extreme interpretation of the mandatory immigration detention statute. We are deeply disappointed in their ruling, and outraged by the impact it will have on immigrants and their rights. (1/3)
Proud of the place I live, Martin Luther King Jr County: yesterday the
@KCCouncil
passed a strong ordinance to protect Immigrant and refugee communities. Today,
@kcexec
Constantine is signing the creation of an Immigrant and Refugee Commission to better serve those communities.
I'm excited to share that our campaign for King County Council has received the endorsement of Becka Johnson Poppe, a fellow candidate for the position during the primary.
@votebecka

Increasingly disparate impact of
#COVID19
in Washington State. 29% of confirmed cases involve Latinx community members even though we make up only 13% of state population.
Proud to have our
@NWIRP
team partnering w/
@cair_wa
today to sue
@CBP
over their refusal to release documents under
#FOIA
regarding the detention of US citizens and LPRs from Iran last month, as CBP continues to mislead the public about what happened. 1/
I am so thrilled that my friend and colleague Malou Chávez will be
@NWIRP
's next executive director. She is an exceptional advocate who is deeply committed to our mission. I know NWIRP has a bright future ahead under her leadership. Congratulations to Malou and to NWIRP.
We have some exciting news to share with you regarding the future of Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. We are happy to announce that Malou Chávez will be NWIRP’s next Executive Director!
While it was a hard decision to leave such an amazing organization, I know the current staff and board, under the leadership of our great new ED, Malou Chavez, will make NWIRP even better than it is today. I hope you'll join me in supporting it. 5/5
On this day 37 years ago, my mom, my brothers, and I arrived in the United States from Colombia. While the transition to a new country was hard for me as a teenager, I am grateful that, like many immigrant parents, my mom made a difficult choice for our family ... 1/4
Today, I joined members of
@UFCW_3000
and their allies at an informational picket line as they demand a fair contract from Storyville Coffee. I hope you will join me in calling on the company to negotiate fairly with their workers.
It’s time for
@storyville
coffee to come to the table and negotiate a fair contract with baristas. Coffee workers are fed up with not having a voice at work. From Starbucks to Storyville, it’s time to stand with baristas demanding respect.

I am honored to receive the endorsement from
@TheStranger
for my campaign for King County Council, District 4: "Jorge Barón’s nearly two decades of battle on behalf of immigrants, who compose nearly one quarter of King County’s population, stood out above his competition."
Thrilled that
@NWIRP
client Roeuth An is back with his family today when he was only days from being deported. Grateful for the work of volunteer attys Joanne and Andrea from

@seattleclemency
and kudos to
@GovInslee

Just a little father-daughter bonding with

I am excited to share that our campaign for King County Council District 4 has received the sole endorsement of
@UFCW_3000
, which represents over 50,000 workers in the grocery, health care, retail, and other industries across the Pacific NW. I'm deeply grateful for their support.
While it's disheartening that it took until 2020 to reach this result, I am still glad to know that an employer won't be able to fire my daughter in the future anywhere in the U.S. simply because of who she is. Thanks to everyone who made this possible, esp. the brave plaintiffs.

It shouldn’t take this much work to get someone out of immigration detention who is at high risk for complications from

@NWIRP
team in keeping this member of our community safe.
Breaking Victory!
A U.S. District Court judge has ordered the federal government to release our client, a community member detained at the Northwest Detention Center at high risk of serious illness or death if he contracts COVID-19.
Proud of the work of
@NWIRP

It didn't feel like quite so much time went by between these two pictures but it's actually been 17 years. Happy 17th Birthday, Isabella Crone-Baron! We love you and we are very proud of what an amazing young woman you have become.
@DrTomFrieden
Great point. I was tested in Seattle a few weeks ago and it took 5 days for results to come back. I was negative and had kept myself isolated as a precaution. But if I'd been positive, it would've been too late at that point to warn people I had been in contact w/ prior to test.
Thank you Judge Paez, this is also how I felt listening to the government's argument as to why it's perfectly fine to deport a child who was not represented by an attorney even though the government was represented.
I am grateful to receive the endorsement of
@SEIU1199NW
, which represents thousands of healthcare workers around the state. Thank you for your support and for all of your work to take care of our community.

Very excited to have Justice Steven González as the next Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court. (If you want to know why, read his concurring opinion in today's ruling extending overtime protections to farmworkers: )
Justice Steven González was elected as the next chief justice of the WA Supreme Court beginning Jan. 11. “I am honored to be elected by my colleagues & I look forward to working with them & others on the important initiatives and decisions of this Court.”
King County friends and neighbors: Ballots are here for the general election! Today is a beautiful day to vote, and I'm privileged to have the opportunity to vote for myself. I would be honored to receive your vote if you reside in County Council District 4.

One final point: it should be noted that part of the reason for these unreasonable increases is that DHS is taking money from USCIS to shift to ICE. This means some immigrants are being asked to pay more so other immigrants can be deported.
