"An official review of the controversial thin blue line patches embraced by some in law enforcement has confirmed they are prohibited under Vancouver Police Department policy, but it's unclear whether officers will be reprimanded for wearing them anyway."

an almost identical stop from a few weeks ago. Six Black people handcuffed for parking in a red zone. The stop took over an hour. The people were visiting from Illinois. Officers searched both rental cars. Found nothing. Left scene ASAP.
Rocio Gonzalez, the 19 year old's mom, said officers told her they thought her son's phone could have been a gun.
"You could have shot my son dead and then that's what you cover it with?" she said.

I contacted councillor Montague to do an interview about this. He tells me he is not available. Maybe that will change later in the day.
Looking to speak to those who'd like to provide input on him wearing the patch for a TV story. Feel free to DM me.
Sitting councillor Brian Montague sporting a Thin Blue Line patch- a symbol which has ties to white nationalist movements and has been banned by police departments all over the country.

Vancouver police spokesperson accused of bullying, harassment, discrimination: court documents
"While working with the VPD, the plaintiff was subject to almost daily harassment and bullying by Addison," documents exclusively obtained by CTV News say.
In a statement to CTV News, Mayor Ken Sim said he stands by Montague’s choice to wear the patch.
“We condemn those who attempt to redefine or co-opt the thin blue line symbol for hatred or political purposes,” the statement said.
Today's story:
I spoke with the man who was filmed without his consent while having an overdose. He says he's seen an increase in people filming those in a vulnerable state on the DTES.
The first-vice president of the Surrey Teachers’ Association, said teachers are perpetually concerned about COVID-19 outbreaks. “It doesn’t seem to matter how concerned we are since nothing is done in response,” she said.

I always feel so awkward announcing things on here but I was recently named as one of the winners of the Foreign Press Correspondents awards and am extremely grateful.

Two outreach workers were driving a client to a health care appointment on the DTES when they were pulled over and handcuffed by police.
"I don’t seem to be able to talk about it without getting emotional,” said one of the nurses.
I spoke with advocates and people with lived experience on the DTES about rising levels of violence for women. They say the recent displacement of encampments will only further harm the city's most vulnerable people.
Hundreds of people here today to support DULF. Last week, the office was raided and two of the co-founders were arrested. People are chanting “DULF saves lives.”

Smokey Devil, a DTES street artist is turning 54 soon. Community members want the city to honour him for his contributions to the community on his upcoming birthday.
For 38 years Brian Hill ruled over Aritzia as its CEO, growing the Vancouver-based company into a fashion behemoth. But behind Aritzia's success was a culture that could be exploitative, former employees said.

Hoping I can correct this narrative before it gains traction. This is not true and implies I made calls to the city about when I’d be at the OPS to do this story which is not the case.

@SeedyVancouver
The point is, it was cleaned today ONLY for your news article. But the other 364 days, it looks like this 👇🏼how about keep the OPS this clean & safe everyday and if not, find a new location.
I was initially told Mayor Sim was unavailable the remainder of the day to do an on-camera interview about this. Now, he is holding media availability for us to do a "walk through" of his office.
Speaking of Mayor office, transparency, & infuriating behaviour
This was a board room where Councillors did City business, met delegations, etc
It was inexplicably expropriated for “regular operations” by Mayor office in January
Last week forgot to lock door:
It’s now a gym?
New from me: Video shows VPD officers laughing after a woman is shot with a beanbag. A member of the public submitted a complaint to the police watchdog. The complaint is now being reviewed by a retired judge.
Update: Frank Huang with the organizing committee says both groups will now be allowed in the parade. "After thorough reconsideration and review, the organizing committee has approved your application to participate in the 2024 Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade."
I spoke with Ryan McNeil, who authored a report on the impact of evictions for people who use drugs. The study is even more pertinent given what’s happening on the DTES. “It’s unconscionable that anybody would push forward with that as a strategy,” McNeil said.
I filed a PRA request w/ the San Bernardino Sheriff's Dept. about spousal orientation, a program designed for those married to someone in law enforcement. They sent me 16 presentations going back years. Most of the slides are pretty basic but this one stood out to me:
A nurse who signed the letter denouncing the decampment said some employees were disturbed by the institutional silence from Vancouver Coastal Health. “I'm not comfortable continuing to do this work and not say anything about how significantly this is harming people,” he said.
After the Supreme Court's decision on Friday, a gynecology clinic in Texas received dozens of calls from new patients inquiring about permanent sterilization.
The doctor that runs the practice said he was in disbelief.
This story is part of my thesis. Domestic abuse advocates & survivors say there's little recourse when restraining orders are violated. One woman I spoke with told me her abuser violated the order at least 25 times. Another woman's abuser violated it 3 times on the same day.
Advocates want a 24 hours/7 days a week OPS. They say VCH didn’t respond to a letter they sent asking for one, so they’ve opened up their own in the DTES.
Here are some of the reasons for spousal orientation. One of which includes "horror stories of previous students". If you attended this program or have info about it please DM me or email me at izavarise

“The late Myles Harps always used to say: ‘I haven’t been to detox because of this rule. I can only quit one thing at a time. I want to quit what’s killing me now, the alcohol. Not what’s going to kill me later, the smoking,'" says Aaron Bailey, with EIDGE.
People who use drugs and advocates are vocalizing their support of a downtown overdose prevention site in response to some residents — and a prominent developer — who no longer want it in their backyard.
Catching up on the April VPD police board meeting. A person tried to question Chief Palmer about Myles Gray: "How is that ok? How do you expect the people of the city to pay for their salaries?" They tried to continue but vice-chair Faye Wightman interrupted.

Ryan McNeil, an affiliated scientist with the BC Centre on Substance Use said the existence of police in and around these sites discourages people from using them. “Which is incredibly concerning in the context of an overdose crisis driven by a very toxic drug supply," he said.
Advocates for people who use drugs say the police presence near overdose prevention sites on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is deterring people from accessing life-saving care due to the lack of trust between law enforcement and the community.
Park board commissioner Laura Christensen said the mayor called her Wednesday evening to apologize.
“I’m disappointed that it’s taken the integrity commissioner report for him to actually pick up the phone over the last two months to apologize,” she said.
@christineeboyle
Stop with the rhetoric! You are wrong again: The patch symbolizes and recognizes all those women and men in policing that have made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives, maintaining the thin blue line. Separating good from bad. It is a memorial patch, plain and simple.
“Instead of working with the province to take action, we’re going to keep doing studies and I think we need to act with a lot more urgency than that,” said OneCity Coun. Christine Boyle about today's amendment to her motion.
