At work, a French guy and I speak Swedish between us because that is the context in which we met, and people are constantly questioning why we don't speak English between us instead and I think that says something about the status of Swedish in Sweden.

The problem right now is people VASTLY underestimate how difficult legal migration is. For many people, there is no feasible way to migrate legally with how it is currently regulated.
A solution to slow irregular migration is to loosen restrictions on legal migration. A portion of the people who would otherwise arrive claiming asylum or live illegally could just apply for visa putting less strain on the asylum system and making it safer to enter the country

I will say i do think it's not outrageous to think a third of this country (🇨🇵) is racist, but i dont think a third of the country is deliberately racist, as in, committed to it. I think a lot of people turn to it from ignorance, poor or outright lack of education, and fear.

I applied to several Ivy League schools and they all rejected me. For graduate school, I went to Oxford, where nearly every Ivy League graduate there talked like a uni admissions essay, alienated everyone with their entitlement, and was not particularly exceptional.

So I think it is quite hard to understand from the outside to what extent religion, nationality, and ethnicity (a murky area on its own) play a role in identity in the Middle East and it does seem to vary quite a bit.

I do think learning languages other than English is getting harder. Increasingly throughout Europe, you cannot really practice a language outside the classroom until you are fluent, native speakers are often impatient, unsupportive, or see their language as ethnified.

Fun fact: I used to speak fluent B2 Icelandic, went to Iceland, did courses, everything. In the years since, I have lived and worked in English, Spanish, and Swedish daily. Apparently I still have a good accent (according to Icelanders) and can say alot, but the fluency is GONE

Depends a lot on context and attitude, but if it is someone I do not know very well and it's not for an obvious purpose (e.g. messing up in a professional presentation or something), I tend to think it's a bit rude.

One way in which Sweden is just far ahead of everyone else is ventilation. All buildings, including very old housing, have extraction fans in every unit to ensure a constant flow of fresh air. Going anywhere else feels like a major downgrade in this respect.
