Int & European Lead for CliDef. Long rants on free speech & climate painfully truncated to 280 characters. All views my own
Legend has it that if you say the words “Dominic Cummings” three times in a Tweet, he appears on your Twitter feed and calls you a sheltered member of the Remain establishment
A reminder that it is possible to condemn provocative police tactics AND to condemn violence against the police. Yes, it might cost us extra Twitter characters - but on the plus side we might avoid being artificially divided into authoritarians and anarchists, which would be nice
Centrists who say progressives undermined Biden & progressives who say centrists undermined Biden both miss the point: Biden won to a large part because progressives & centrists were able to put division aside & work together to a common end. Something we can learn from in the UK
Today is a day of celebration. We have accomplished something that our children, grandchildren and future generations will look back upon and say to us, “Thank you.”
Please, please: I know we live in a polarised age and that we're meant to identify with one side or the other without question... But can we perhaps agree to do away with the expression "speak your truth"? Truth is not just a quirk of identity akin to the way we brew a cup of tea
You know the best way to take a look behind the scenes of the Home Office? Whistleblowing. Which you’re now proposing to treat in the same way as state-sponsored espionage
@KonstantinKisin
@RosieisaHolt
Did you not read Rosie's tweet? She's specifically calling out the Home Secretary for stoking hatred. I don't understand this argument that people need to curate their Twitter profile to ensure it reflects their opposition to every hateful movement. She's a comedian, not the Pope
Would be nice if a candidate attracting 1% support in the polls attracted 1% of our attention on Twitter.
To restore balance I propose we respond to provocative Laurence Fox tweets not with more Laurence Fox tweets, but with excerpts from the manifesto of
@CountBinface
instead
Oldest trick in the authoritarian playbook
Discredit > Demonise > Dismantle
Point to a few isolated acts of idiocy to vilify whole movement. Refer at every opportunity to "extremists". Create conditions for criminalisation to no longer look like the assault on democracy it is
Pretty fucking awful, when you think about it, that Donald Trump made the conscious decision to kill 14 people in the last 7 months of his presidency. But maybe that's just normal in a country that doesn't
#AbolishTheDeathPenality
#BrandonBernard
Ah yes, that well known "Right to Make Conservative MPs Feel Insecure About The Way They Speak About Minorities" enshrined in the 16th Protocol of the European Convention on Human Rights
One of the greatest threats to our freedom and liberties is the cancel culture promoted by the the small but vocal woke brigade.
We will strengthen human rights laws to enshrine this freedom
So firstly, a minute to reflect on the sheer bloody marvellousness of this. Coming so soon after consultations on the
#HumanRightsAct
and Official Secrets Act it's easy to feel cynical + sceptical about the govt's intentions. But this is misplaced here
Exhibit A on the importance of the BBC: Julia Hartley-Brewer
As tribalism grows, people become less tolerant of the airing of opposing views and more likely to treat them as unacceptable or biased - an "imposition" on a presumptively fair-minded (i.e. like-minded) public
No, people who criticise the BBC don’t want to hear their own views parroted back at them. They just don’t want the BBC staffers to impose THEIR views on them. They want unbiased, factual reporting on the issues they care about & debates giving voices to all sides. That’s all.
"Boycott a small pub owned by an angry conspiracy theorist!" they say, via a billionaire-owned social media platform built on anger and conspiracy theories
Mega respect to
@carolecadwalla
for 1) standing up to bullies; 2) vigorously fighting back against efforts to silence her in the courts; and 3) somehow making civil litigation interesting
Limitation: because I said almost exact same thing more than a year earlier, in
@ObserverUK
on BBC & here on Twitter. Why didn’t he take action then? Truth: because it’s true. Public interest: because journalists must be able to report on subjects as serious as this or we’re lost
Hello everyone - I would be very grateful if you could sponsor my sister who is now running the half-marathon solo (sorry Rosie).
@raidukorg
is an excellent charity working on corporate accountability issues around the world - give them (and my sister) your love!
SO my brother
@holt_charlie
were running for
@raidukorg
- but now I'm running solo because Charlie got hit by a car (he is okay! Just lots of internal bruising and on crutches) but would mean a lot to us both if you sponsored this brilliant charity:
Bezos could pay every Amazon worker +$100,000 and still have as much money as he did pre-pandemic
Don't let him hide behind his well-funded (though currently representing under 0.5% of his net worth) greenwashing. Not when Amazon pays <1.2% tax in the US
What's worrying about this whole episode is the shifting standards as to what merits our "fury". It's one thing to be "furious" about a foreign national defending their rights in our courts - now apparently we should be "furious" about a British citizen being allowed to do so
Struggling to think of a better definition of "white privilege" than the white male "radical" on my Twitter feed refusing to vote for a black woman in a race against a shamelessly racist president. You have the luxury to bask in your moral purity. Millions of POC in the US do not
@ukhomeoffice
@StevePeers
@pritipatel
So that’s your link? Contemporaneity? Seriously? You justify that tweet on the basis that, at the same time as deporting some foreign national offenders, you were challenged against unlawfully removing some (completely separate) asylum seekers?
Is that genuinely your defence?
So folks it seems I'm running in a half marathon on Sunday
The bad news is that I am in no fit state to be running in a half marathon
The good news is that this will be very amusing for those watching AND it is for a very good cause

@RosieisaHolt
Hahaha Rosie this is one of the best replies I've ever seen on your wall and that is saying something. Truly the Sam Mendes of reply guys. I think you should frame it on your wall or have it as profile background so you can be inspired to create your own 1917 one-take masterpiece
Right! Though we should probably note that the BBC has been pandering to nakedly political pressure since 2003 - when a certain No. 10 spin-doctor pursued it for its supposed "anti-war agenda", forcing the chairman to resign in what he called a "deranged and vindictive" attack...
If this is true it is a dreadful signal, media thinking the way to deal with nakedly political pressure is to pander to it. Particularly with these liars and conmen it won’t work. Give an inch they take a mile
@snigskitchen
I would love to understand the thought process that leads a millionnaire Telegraph/Times journalist to think "huh, maybe the British underclass will appreciate my thoughts on economical breakfast choices"
The sad fact is that the US voted for a schoolyard bully to run the country in 2016. It’s a horrible fact to acknowledge but Trump is playing to his electoral strength here, and Biden is happily handing over his lunch money
#PresidentialDebate
Donald Trump is not a genius. Boris Johnson is not a genius. Dominic Cummings is not a genius. Anyone can be a “genius” if they’re willing to dispense with all moral standards and constitutional norms. We’re not dealing with strategic masterminds but with the morally bankrupt
Cringing Embarrassment (noun): the wincing feeling of shame induced by the sight of a British PM feigning outrage at a fabricated culture war.
Ex: "I see the UK COVID19 stats have been updated - so I suppose we can expect some more cringing embarrassment in time for News at Six"
"I think it's time we stopped our cringing embarrassment about our history."
Boris Johnson says we need to "stop this general bout of self-recrimination and wetness" amid suggestions that songs like 'Rule, Britannia!' may be replaced with orchestral versions by the BBC.
Indeed, pretty much any scandal or high-profile abuse of power you can name. Cambridge Analytica? Multiple threats against the
@guardian
+
@carolecadwalla
(not to mention the later SLAPP from Arron Banks). Grenfell Tower? Incredibly, threats by the council
This follows years of campaigning and the powerful advocacy of SLAPP victims such as
@CatherineBelton
and
@tomburgis
. It follows MPs seeing first-hand how SLAPPs can target ANYONE who works to hold power to account - even, in the case of
@CharlotteLeslie
, their fellow MPs.
HUGE solidarity, best wishes, and all the rest to
@SDonziger
for his trial today. Hoping today will see years of judicial harassment, arbitrary detention, and abuse of power come to an end. Anyone in NYC - rally in support at 500 Pearl St at 8:30am with
@SusanSarandon
and others
I love this team. We may have lost and I may have had to lose my nails in the process, but thank you
@England
for representing us so brilliantly in such grim ptimes. Here’s to bringing it home next year instead
Seriously though, the
#HumanRightsAct
is legal.
Cancel culture is cultural.
A law cannot be blamed for culture trends, just as cultural trends cannot be reversed by a law.
They're using these trigger words as a substitute for actual arguments. It's shameless
We are ONE DAY away from the launch of the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) website launch
In the video below the brilliant
@acaruanagalizia
explains what SLAPPs are, how they impact public watchdogs, and what CASE is doing to fight back
We'll continue to push for the strongest possible protection for public watchdogs facing legal retaliation. If you've been impacted by SLAPPs, PLEASE do contribute to the call for evidence. Your voice really matters - + with any luck, it will only get louder in the months to come
In short, this is long, LONG overdue. Writers such as
@NickCohen4
and publications such as
@PrivateEyeNews
have been talking about this for years. George Monbiot was warning about the use of SLAPPs against environmental activists almost 10 years ago. None of this is new.
Given that "strengthen freedom of speech" is literally in the headline of the MOJ's press release on
#BillOfRights
Bill, it's quite incredible how feeble its provisions on free speech are
It's like they're not even bothering to hide the fact that its just a bullshit pretext 🧵
"I need you to step over here... So I can shut down your speech away from the cameras"
Amazing how shallow the 1st Amendment proves to be when exercised by a black man and not a corporation
Perhaps now we can at least stop eulogising the US for its commitment to free speech
This 24-year-old black man gives a moving speech to thank nonviolent protesters who are being arrested in Oakland tonight. Watch the whole thing to see how the police react.
Cheering to know that in some parts of the world competence and compassion in government is still recognised and rewarded. Congratulations to

Incredible that a government so powerful can be so bad at its own propaganda. I guess that's what happens when you shut down any vehicle of dissent: there's no incentive to learn PR skills. Either way, if you have any doubt about the humanitarian crisis in Xinjiang watch this

Right I'm sorry I don't want to play the govt's culture war games but this latest confected skirmish is just too silly:
1) This is not just a govt minister intervening in student affairs. This is a govt minister intervening in a decision made collectively by just 200 STUDENTS
@RosieisaHolt
ROSIE. The rules are there to uphold the DIGNITY of Parliament, which it had in ABUNDANCE until you and your ilk decided to start MOCKING its honourable members
On March 26, the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) will be launching its website - a platform designed to build the solidarity and resilience of civil society against legal bullies. See below for more info on how SLAPPs block accountability & silence criticism
The modern monarchy is supposed to be symbolic and ceremonial, concerned primarily with projecting a certain image of the country to the rest of the world. So what sort of image of the UK is this projecting?Weakness & insecurity. It should be a source of embarrassment to everyone
If we value free speech, we we can’t afford to lose momentum in the fight against SLAPPs
Me in the Times writing on behalf of the co-chairs of the UK anti-SLAPP coalition (
@skcoughtrie
@jessicanimhain

Let's be very clear about this. "Hijacking" is a totally different thing from a small minority engaging in sporadic acts of violence. It suggests violent elements are in control. It is an effort to delegitimise and demonise activism that comes straight out of the Trump playbook
But it is clear that the protests have been sadly hijacked by extremists intent on violence. The attacks on the police and indiscriminate acts of violence which we have witnessed over the last week are intolerable and they are abhorrent. 7/8
Of course, it also follows the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a growing appreciation of how SLAPPs block efforts to expose kleptocracy. It follows the
#MeToo
movement and the systematic efforts to silence victims through the courts. It follows Jimmy Saville, Harvey Weinstein...
It is emphatically not the role of the police to force people to be respectful.
Do you know who IS legally obligated to show respect though? The police.
Not to the Crown, but to us: to our human dignity and to our human rights. And yes Keir, that includes the right to protest
'Don't ruin it for them'
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told
#BBCBreakfast
protestors opposed to the monarchy should 'respect' those who want to say 'thank you' to Queen Elizabeth II
Finally, some much-needed clarity on why suing student unions and clamping down on protest rights will "strengthen free speech". Thank you
@RosieisaHolt
: Toby Young will face some stiff competition when they start recruiting for that Free Speech Champion
A fabulous
#SLAPP
bellyflop from
@AGLAustralia
. Congratulations
@GreenpeaceAP
for turning up the volume on the corporate bullies trying to silence them
BREAKING: Great news!
@GreenpeaceAP
has achieved a landmark victory for freedom of expression over
@AGLAustralia
. I’m here on the steps of the Federal Court after hearing the ruling.
Thank you
@GlobalJusticeUK
for shining a light on this. It's worth emphasising
1) The problem is not new - but it is growing, and will continue to do so as ISDS clauses proliferate and fossil fuel companies grow more desperate.
Politicians in robes have just issued an incoherent decision that makes a mockery of precedent and casually endangers the lives of women and girls
The SC has become nakedly political and can no longer be considered a legitimate judicial body. The US Left must confront this fact
So this is excellent news - but we have a long way to go. Anti-SLAPP measures have been announced elsewhere in Europe + failed to deliver (Malta being a particularly sobering example). It's crucial we keep up pressure + that everyone impacted contributes to the call for evidence
Happy New Year! Here's hoping for a year of more real-life meaningful encounters with strangers. Let's remember how much this website amplifies anger, deepens division, and generally misrepresents how much we dislike & disagree with each other. We're all bigger softies in person!
I am so, so excited about this - the
@SLAPPtaskforce
is finally up & running. From Sep 5 those who try to use the courts to shut down critical speech and advocacy will be in for a nasty surprise. Civil society is fighting back. If you're in SF or NYC come join!
#ProtectTheProtest
But we need to go further + address the elephant in the room: costs. Reforming legal aid would perhaps be the most effective way to defuse the power of SLAPPs. Schedule 1 of LASPO must therefore be amended to prevent SLAPP litigants from exploiting their relative power and wealth
"See I'm known in the trade as litigious. Pull people into court straight away, no messing. "Oh dear, I've been wronged, your Worship. Wronged! Dreadful!". Two hundred grand. Five times I've done that"
Jimmy Saville interviewed by Surrey Police, 2009
For all its faults (and contrary to JHB's disingenuous tweet these generally result from exposure to govt pressure) the BBC acts as a bulwark against such a drift
In an age of polarisation and media fragmentation, this is crucial. Without it we'd be reduced to a nation of JHBs
The UK government is on course to have spent £240m by the year's end on no deal Brexit consultancy - 3/4 of which will be spent on the same 5 firms (Deloitte, PWC etc)
Personally I'd prefer to spend £7,000 on a nice lady with a blue anti-racism puppet, but maybe that's just me
Our treatment of these women show just how uncomfortable the UK is with its multiracial identity. If these were white women seduced by a Christian fundamentalist cult it's hard to believe the idea of separating them from their Britishness would be countenanced as a possibility
Thanks to
@carolecadwalla
Nigel Farage's inner anti-SLAPP crusader has finally been able to spread its wings and fly. Never too late to join the good fight Nigel - as you say, good always does triumph over evil in the end...
Check out the amazing new interactive platform from
@EarthRightsIntl
, “Fighting Back,” which lays out a road map to protect the rights of
#earthrightsdefenders
. Given the growing efforts to attack, criminalise and vilify environmental activists this work has never been so crucial
When I heard there was a "controversy" about a "like" in the context of yet another manufactured culture war I resolved to keep my head firmly in the sand
But no, Twitter could not let me stay in my happy little bubble
And now I am overwhelmed by the sheer silliness of it all
@snigskitchen
@DineshDSouza
There is a whole class of right wing political commentator whose whole shtick is to be the sardonic, exasperated, rationalist who sticks it to the hysterical liberals. These men (for all are men) - Dinesh, Shapiro, Douglas Murray - reliably come out with the silliest takes of all
@RosieisaHolt
I for one think it’s quite sweet if, for at least the couple of hours it takes for the outrage cycle to switch gears, we we as a nation can come together in righteous indignation
OH MY GOD SO EXCITED FOR

This is the first march my dad has been on since 1971 when he accidentally stumbled into an anti milk-snatching protest. He looks as confused now as I imagine he was back then, but I’m so grateful to him and others for standing up for their children’s future

When the clock strikes midnight on their 18th birthday, teenagers are instantaneously conferred the ability to think independently. Or so we're told. It's because she so powerfully dispels this nonsense that

Thank you so much for all the well-wishes on my 18th birthday!
Tonight you will find me down at the local pub exposing all the dark secrets behind the climate- and school strike conspiracy and my evil handlers who can no longer control me!
I am free at last!!
A huge thank you to the brilliant
@mcaruanagalizia
and
@caoilfhionnanna
for their powerful accounts of SLAPPs in Europe, to
@Sarah_M_Clarke
for her excellent moderation, and to everyone who came to our event last night. So heartening to see so many engaged in this important issue
That the police could ever have considered its actions an appropriate way to respond to a candlelight vigil shows just how impoverished its idea of peaceful protest has become
It desperately needs strengthening - not further diluted by yet another law to bolster police powers
There are many other components that any robust anti-SLAPP law should cover. You can find more in the UK Anti-SLAPP Working Group's Policy Paper () as well as the proposals for a UK anti-SLAPP law we published in November: .
Thoroughly depressing to see so many on the left pile on the BBC. It's the oldest trick in the authoritarian playbook: discredit, delegitimise, dismantle. Same trick that led Greenpeace and XR to be included in anti-extremism briefings last year. Let's not clear the path for them
Isabel dos Santos here, using the age-old tactic of throwing money at the courts to make bad news go away.
No matter that the ICIJ has exhaustively catalogued your corruption. Got a few million to spare? Never fear - Schillings is here to help you hound and harass your critics
Completely blown away by this woman's courage. Dr Christine Blasey Ford's dignity and composure in the face of virulent misogyny is inspiring. It brings shame to the cynical cowards on the other side of the room and the sexual predator they put in the White House.
