To the proactive Port worker who has tested positive: thank you bro/sis, thank you for being careful, thank you for getting tested, thank you for being responsible. We are all in this together.
If ever we needed an example of NZers looking after NZers it can be found in emergencies where Māori throw their marae doors open to any and all who need respite. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Around 65% of New Zealanders will get between $0 and $2 a week from the National Party's tax cut proposal.
This policy is aimed at enriching the wealthy. Don't buy it.
Deeply distressing to see aged New Zealanders so deeply concerned and angry about the use of Te Reo. My Grandfathers fought alongside Māori Battalion guys in Crete, North Africa and Italy and he would have been disgusted by the anti Māori bigotry National and Act are encouraging
Family in Thorndon have woken up to protestors camping in their driveway, outside their three year old's room. The Police have done nothing.
Suggestions?
Thread: I want you to imagine you own a car. You love this car. It makes life as you know it possible. Someone comes and tells you "we need this car now, but you can keep this" as they pass you one of the hub caps. 1/
If you were the PM, why would you go to Australia and tell them that Māori kids can't read, when that is patently untrue?
What do you get out of that?
Seems like a weird thing to do, right?
I'm a teacher in a 48% Māori High School. If I have to go masked at all times, be vaccinated, and get tested weekly SO BE IT. All of my students deserves the best protection they can get.
The same guy saying he can't live in Premier House because it "needs maintenance", is cutting funding for school rebuilds but still expects kids to put up with mould and leaks.
Had a yarn with some young people who will be able to vote for the first time in the next NZ election. I asked them who they would vote for.
One kid looked me in the eye and said, deadpan: "Well, definitely not the potato"
Kid in class (who has antivax parents): "I think I need to go get vaccinated".
Other kid: " I'll come support you, if you want"
Me: 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
To the leadership team at Freyberg:
What the hell did you think would happen?
You invited a lunch-lifting, mana insulting, benefit cutting, gun loving, white supremacist donation taking, Te Tiriti deriding, rule-by-fiat enabling politician to your school.
I don't give a flying f what Seymour says about Bloomfield. The man came and played rugby in the Nui after eliminating Covid in the community. He's a damn legend.
Tova was completely appropriate here. Asking for specific assurances around punishment, isolation, and treatment of our kids is not "revolting". What IS revolting is knowing the harm these camps do, and doing it anyway, Karen.
Luxon is wrong. 100% of students never pass the "university entrance exam".
Because it doesn't exist. Never has.
Signed, guy who helps students gain University Entrance.
Ok peeps, let's get positive. Who here had a good vaccination experience? Tell us about it and retweet. Maybe some journos might like to pick up the vibe and run with it.
It is incredible how many New Zealanders would rather have shit in their water supply and on their beaches than allow the government to improve things.
The simplest explanation for Pākehā settlement in Aotearoa is not that we came here to escape class, but that we came here because land was cheap and available, and land was cheap and available because we swindled and brutalised Māori to take it.
Luxon needs to show some goddamn leadership and deal with Winston Peter's flagrant misinformation about the gender of female athletes at the Olympics. This should be beneath our government.
Kia ora (greetings)
@Rotary
. Is it normal for Rotary Clubs to paste the faces of former Heads of Government in modern social democracies onto toilets for club events?
The kids are alright 'Exhibit A': Young lad at high school had his uncle buy a mountain bike off FB marketplace for him. Really nice Trek full susp. The next weekend he notices a WGTN rider posted a stolen notice that had a bike that was exactly the same. (OMINOUS NOISE)
I have to give it to Trevor Mallard and the Police. They waited just long enough for the Anti-Mandate eggs to show their true colours, threatening lynchings, egging 17 year olds, and abusing passersby, before moving in.

I have never met or seen as many Christians so ready to let the vulnerable suffer as I have during this pandemic. My faith compels me to preference the needs of the vulnerable over my own. It appears that this is no longer as common as it was in my childhood.
Luxon on TalkBack: "It’s clear its become a distraction, so I’ll happily fund my own living costs”
Bro, we already fund your living costs in your $400K paycheck. Either live in the Mansion we renovated in 2018, or stfu.
Teachers are absolutely HOWLING at schools coming out with statements saying they are already doing the hours of reading, writing, and numeracy demanded by Luxon and Stanford in their existing timetables. It was always a scam policy because schools were already doing it.
#nzpol
He's not perfect but, I want to acknowledge that Chippy's reforms to the school funding system have resulted in our formerly Decile 3 school having an extra $300,000 in direct state funding this year. Game changing.
I know rescuing these guys is the first priority, but I think we need to ask questions about why their employer hadn't moved them to higher ground, and why they appear to not have any emergency supplies to protect them from exposure. This is their employer's responsibility.
Your friendly reminder that every landlord in New Zealand gets to vote in every local government district they own a home in. Democracy, my hairy arse.
Now that teachers are getting torched by Covid due to our high exposure roles, can we have a chat about ensuring teachers (and others in high exposure roles) can be given the recovery time necessary to avoid Long Covid?
Nicola Willis WILL make the kids I teach POORER. Their outcomes will become even worse, and she will blame them for not making anything of themselves. All while ensuring her kids are insulated from the austerity she creates.
Turns out the NZ Principals Conference last week may have been a super-spreader event. The fact they held this conference as a face-to-face event tells you all you need to know about risk assessment in education in NZ.
@MorganGodfery
and
@RNZeducation
.
Every time I read an article describing an NZ school as a "top" school I have to remind myself that all that means is wealthy.
If kids with the same massive privileges went to any other school, it too would become a "top" school.
Aotearoa's Olympians take us to 11th on the medal table and we are lauded as per capita legends.
Our kids come 11th in reading in the OECD and Luxon badmouths them and our schools.
Make it make sense.
Does Erica Stanford not realise that the majority of relievers are retired teachers often in their 60s and 70s. They don't want to work in viral cesspools and many have already caught covid several times.
The National Government took the funding for our school rebuild in 2010 and threw it into tax cuts for the rich. 7 years later Chris Bishop attempted to promise us $12 million. In 2023 the first of five brand new buildings will open. Labour promised $20M and delivered $40M. /1
Dear teenagers, the only party who seem to give a flying f**k about whether you get Covid appears to be the
@NZGreens
. They are the only party advocating free KN95 masks, and the reinstitution of masks in classes.
People asking why I think that 100% staff vaccination at our school is a good thing. I think the commitment to the health and wellbeing of each other and our community's children shown by our staff is something to be celebrated. 1/
Home sick with COVID and it took exactly 3 days before work was emailing asking for advice on what to do next with one of my classes. I don't want or think I should have to develop learning tasks while trying to recover from COVID.
A reminder that teachers can have immense influence. Had a chat today to a graduating high school student about his next steps. We laughed and commiserated about a tough year, and I congratulated him about getting his first job at a nursery. Then he looked me in the eye... 1/
Our High Schools' board has been taken over by anti-mandate parents (5/7) fixated on the perceived injustice of vaccine requirements for SPORT. WE HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO FOCUS ON!
Luxon's promotion of Michaela School suggests he wants to implement its methods here in Aotearoa. The military/prison discipline elements can get in the bin, but I applaud Luxon's bid for teacher/student rations of 1:13. Where is this in the his budget? I can't find it.
"Farmers Andrew and Karen White's family have been extracting value from this land since 1865 when the land was confiscated from Te Ati Awa market gardeners, rendering them homeless and asset-less for the next 5 generations. Today, their llama wool is showing real innovation."
Country Calendar should include a Mana Whenua perspective on the whakapapa of and acquisition process for all stories that start with "I'm proud to be the 5th generation farming this land since great great grandad cleared it in 1907".
Got copied in on this today in response to National and Act's miserly lunch cuts. Our kids are getting radicalised very quickly by the decisions this govt is making. I'm going to post the letter in full in this thread.

Today was brutal. Got called a "cunt" for asking a kid to stop threatening another kid with a group bashing. Got told to "fuck off" by another for asking him to erase the white board he had been writing on. Exhausted and troubled. Some of the kids are so damaged and angry.
"You have basically cropped ... five words out of the whole Te Tiriti, and you're using it for political gain."

🧵This is deeply insulting and so horribly incorrect that it calls into question whether Stanford has spent any time at all getting to grips with her potential future responsibilities. 1/
There are 73,000 teachers in NZ. The vast majority are in the unions and oppose charter schools. Even if all 78 applications were done by teachers, their wishes represent only a tiny, tiny fraction of the profession.
We've had 78 applications to open new charter schools, or convert state schools into charter schools. There's huge demand from educators to free themselves from the shackles of the state system and meet the needs of students who are being failed.
NZ Teachers could clog up Erica Stanford's email pretty fast if they all sent through the prior learning assessment, eAsstle, year, term and unit plans, individual lesson plans, student progress assessment charts/docs. Seems like this might be a learning experience for her.
Luxon spreading disinformation again this morning. The attendance stat he uses does not mean "regular attendance", it means that many students have taken more than 5 days off school for reasons like sickness etc.
A metric buttload of us care, Liam. Hawkesby's disinformation, like Molloy's, has the effect of lowering trust in experts who work to warn us and keep us safe. If you can't see how that is a problem, and that it is important for them to be found accountable...
Luxon claims to care about spending, but one of his first acts as new leader of the opposition was to catch a limo instead of take a two minute walk. It's clear that the baubles are more important than the idea of service.
Found out today that when the DHB and local Māori health providers offered to bring a vaccination bus to our High School to get as many rangatahi vaccinated as possible the Board said no because: "It would insult the whanau of the unvaccinated"!
So, three days into 2022 and we are:
1) Giving our students regular mask breaks outside.
2) Handing out masks if needed.
3) Dealing with bullshit mask exemptions.
4) Keeping windows and doors open.
5) Running the AC like crazy.
6) Thinking we need hearing tests.
Found out my parents are playing 'wait and see' with the vaccine. When do I tell them that their 'wait and see' means no grandchild contact if Delta gets through?
If you actively support the new Boot Camps, while being unable to acknowledge that high status offenders like Uffindell would never end up there, then maybe you should examine that.
As both a father and a teacher, I won't be following any guidance that suggests sick kids should attend school. I'll keep my kids home when they are sick, and I'll keep advising parents to keep students home when they are sick.
So far this term we've covered the conquest of Aotearoa my settlers and forces of the British Empire. Today we started the Native Lands Act 1862. My students faces as we unpacked it's design, purpose and outcomes, just heartbroken.
Just pulled the trigger on an air purifier. I'm not waiting until July for the thousands the Govt hasn't yet purchased to arrive. I have multiple bullshit mask exemption claiming students in my classes.

If you are wondering why leaky, mouldy, rotten, falling down, poorly ventilated and cold schools aren't being fixed by
@NZNationalParty
, it's because they don't give a fuck about your kids. They have Landlord boots to lick.
@AMShowNZ
calls in an Aussie criminal justice expert &:ex cop to put the boot into our gov but instead he praises our police and justice system & pisses Ryan Bridges right off.
@actparty
I feel sorry for them too, they are graduating into a New Zealand in terrible shape due to you lot. But they are amazing students, super successful and they will pull through and build a better New Zealand despite the terrible start you are gifting them
Anyone suggesting standardised testing for five years olds is a literal moron. Learning speed during that developmental period alone means that your data is almost meaningless by the time you get it. Pour everything into learning.
Absolutely howling at the deranged comedy of
@NicolaWillisMP
blaming Labour's highly responsible pay equity and inflation based deals for teachers, nurses etc for the state of the public service books.

Imagine thinking that the needs of landlords and other wealthy NZers are more important than speech and language therapy and educational supports for kids with disabilities, refugees, and migrant kids.
Don't buy National's scaremongering about Maths achievement. If you want better Maths results get more kids out of poverty, invest in teacher aides, professional learning and curriculum advisory specialists.
@nzmrichards
Also from the report "Trend data from this study and NMSSA indicates that at Year 8, there has been no statistically significant change in mathematics achievement scores since at least 2013. On average, students scored about the same in 2013, 2018, 2022, and 2023."
