Minister Faafoi announced 20k workers would come to NZ under changes to the critical worker criteria in January. To the end of April 12 have arrived. Not 12 thousand. 12. This visa becomes obsolete on July 4 so unless 19,988 are arriving before then it’s another failed policy.
I have got to know Kris Faafoi well over the last few years and we have had some great debates in the house. Kris is a genuinely lovely guy and I wish him and his family all the very best.
Just been speaking to a man in India who was in NZ on a temp work visa & left in 2014. He’s getting the cost of living payment & still has an old nz bank account. The scale of this muck up could be massive given how many temp migrants come & go. This is not just an admin error.
@ClintVSmith
Before he visited businesses with me, we spent the morning in Mangere delivering a car full of hot meals and baking that my volunteers cooked to a communtiy hub that are doing it real tough. We didn’t tell the media. But you know, tweet away.
Jan Tinetti is responsible for the educational outcomes of hundreds of thousands of kiwi kids and a $17 billion budget. Today she was found to have acted with a high degree of negligence.
Questions need to be asked if she is up to this task.
PM in May 2020: Split migrant families will be a priority for me. PM today: Announces tourists & working holiday makers can come next month. Split families have to wait until October. This is beyond cruel.
Labour want to mandate their Common Practice Model of how teachers should teach in our schools. Just a reminder of what the latest common practice model says about maths…..
Skilled Migrant Residence Visas currently taking Immigration 47 months to process. Many are leaving in frustration. I suppose if they are put off by waiting another 4 years then perhaps they just don’t want to be in New Zealand. Is that right
@jacindaardern
?
Just 2% of decile 1 students passed the writing assessment for the NCEA pilot.
This means 98% of decile 1 high school students do not have foundational levels of literacy to engage in the world. This should be a national outrage.
New data shows that the percentage of school leavers attaining NCEA Level 2 has consistently fallen under Labour
Just 59% of Māori students attained Level 2 in 2022 - a 10% drop since 2017.
Labour have erased years of progress achieved under the last National Government.
Completely unbelievable that Labour have just said that they aren’t going to support Nicola Willis’ members bill to allow mums and dads to take their parental leave at the same time should they wish.
This is a resounding vote of no confidence in Jan Tinetti & Labour on education
Chris Hipkins spent half a decade as Education Minister overseeing a decline in achievement
A National Government will Teach the Basics Brilliantly to set every kid up for success later in life.
Labour’s immigration policies are so bad that fewer nurses are applying to come here than when the borders were closed.
Just 14 nurses have applied in nearly 6 weeks compared to 57 a month earlier in the year.
We must offer migrant nurses residence immediately.
I was so hoping that we could get our 5-11 year olds vaccinated before Omicron got out 😞. We have to wait until mid January to protect them which feels like forever when the DJs contacts are likely spread across multiple holiday destinations by now.
Term Four attendance data out this afternoon.
The highest level of unjustified absences on record and 1/2 of kids not attending school regularly.
Labour are failing a generation of kids.
Labour have just quietly made changes to the Green List adding four extra occupations onto the Straight to Residence Pathway, but still no nurses and midwives.
Out of touch!
After months of pressure Labour have finally adopted some of National’s plan to attract and retain working holiday makers to NZ.
Todays changes are an admission that Labour are failing to deliver the workers businesses need to survive.
Todays immigration announcement must fast track nurses to residence
National called for this on the 12th of May
There is absolutely no justification for making nurses wait 2 years when kiwis are waiting longer for lifesaving treatments because of chronic staff shortages
The Charlotte Bellis story is terrible and it is not an isolated case. So many pregnant women and their partners have been denied emergency MIQ rooms even when the pregnancies are high risk and they have no visa to stay where they are. Hipkins was told. He did nothing.
The Minister of Immigration can’t name a single health organisation that supports making nurses wait two years before applying for residence.
We must place nurses on the fast track to residence to attract migrant nurses who will save lives.
On Health NZ’s first day of existence, its CEO called for nurses to be prioritised on the fast track to residence pathway, stating, ‘We are very supportive of that, and we are working with Immigration at the moment’. Why can’t the Minister just admit they got this one wrong?
Restaurants across NZ are shut because they don’t have chefs but this govt are turning them away 🤦♀️
Michael Wood can fix the problem with a stroke of the pen but months later nothing has changed.
An estimated 20k additional critical workers can apply for visas from midnight TONIGHT. Great, except Faafoi hasn’t issued the immigration instructions to say what the new criteria will be… Pattern of failure from a Minister who is letting employers down.
Wood was asked today to confirm only 1 nurse had applied for a work visa since his policy was announced. He answered that 50 job checks have been completed. Too bad a job check isn’t the same thing as a nurse applying for a visa. It’s just the employer getting approval to hire.
Head of MIQ just confirmed to me that those who would have secured a room on 6 Jan if not for the IT glitch will be offered MIQ vouchers. The ECE teacher from the 1 News story whose 10y/o daughter was 426 in the queue but missed out will now be reunited after 2 years!!
The number of kids unenrolled from school has more than doubled under Labour to 8,500
Community attendance services are overwhelmed with up to 200 students per case officer
Today Chris Hipkins blamed these frontline providers for underperforming … this govt is underperforming!
This morning Michael Wood confirmed he has finally made a decision on changing the rules that are turning away highly skilled migrant chefs due to a technicality … but we have to wait for the announcement 👎
Too late for restaurants forced closed by these absurd rules.
An education system should be judged on how well it can lift children up from disadvantaged backgrounds and provide them with an equal opportunity to succeed.
The literacy and numeracy results show that after five years Labour is utterly failing our most vulnerable children.
How many investor migrants did
@Stuart_NashMP
talk to when developing the new investor policy? None. How many did MBIE interview? None. What level & type of investment do investors make after their initial investment? Government has no idea That’s a lot to risk on
#PolicyOnAHunch
BREAKING NEWS!! In another accidental upload to the immigration website - it looks like the Minister’s announcement tomorrow will contain National’s plan to grant residency for those workers who stuck with us through COVID!
#PolicyWin
#EffectiveOpposition
The Reserve Bank once again have said labour shortages are driving up prices and constraining business activity.
Labour's failure to deliver on immigration is making the cost of living crisis even worse.
Nelson only has two Covid testing stations. Today 5 of the classes at one primary had to get tested and lines are 3+ hours long. Results are taking days to get back. We need access to rapid antigen tests and LAMP tests. PCR is falling over.
Faafoi on
@NewshubNationNZ
- he’ll be grumpy if INZ don’t meet their processing targets. It takes 5 months to process a visitor visa. It was 21 days in 2017. 2021 Resident Visa he promised in 12 months he’s admitted that’s now 18. The country need results not a grumpy Minister.
Locking down a country isn’t a health response, it’s a tool to buy time while we gear up our health system and vaccinate people. We have squandered that time:
Jan Tinetti - “I can categorically tell that member that the Ministry of Education is responsible for the data. I have no say over that…”
But emails released under the OIA show that political staff in her office delayed the release of critical attendance data for 10 weeks!
MBIE and INZ are stopping NZ residents from entering the country by not allowing them to participate in the MIQ lottery. They say it’s an IT glitch but won’t be fixing it.
#R21VisaSham
Only 3300 working holiday makers have arrived since March. We have been calling for months for policies to attract more WHMs. Labour will finally announce changes on Sunday announcing 13 countries that will have their numbers doubled. Too little too late, we needed them yesterday
This week the Reserve Bank said labour shortages are the worst in 50 years, and the inflationary consequences of this are greater than in May … when the borders were largely closed. 🤔
Only Labour could open the border and make skill shortages even worse.
My heart breaks again for split migrant families left out of today’s announcement. Those 300 construction workers will be able to bring their families, yet our migrant math teachers haven’t seen their kids & partners in over 400 days. We need a commitment for these families.
If we needed another example of this Government being spin heavy & PR driven - in June Minister Hipkins announced 300 border exceptions for teachers. Zero have entered the country in 6 months and MOE officials say they won’t be here until April 2022.
Term four truancy data out this morning. 10,000 more kids are now chronically absent from school in just one term. Over 67,000 kids are now attending school less that 70% of the time. No accountability. No targets. No plan. Labour are failing the next generation of kids.
Removing open work rights for partners will make it even harder to attract skilled workers to NZ
Deferring these changes until April only adds to the mountain of uncertainty for migrants
Instead of deferring the changes the Immigration Minister should ditch them entirely
In February Labour promised 82 attendance officers for Term 2
3 months later & weeks into Term 2 it turns out they are just 82 advisors and only 1 has started working
Tinetti should stop blaming her officials and take responsibility for this shambles
The absurdity of this is that at the same time Minister Faafoi is inviting migrant doctors to enter New Zealand via a border exception to fill staff shortages, migrant doctors already here are preparing to leave because of the broken immigration system.
Minister makes a welcome but very overdue change to immigration instructions regarding chefs. I raised the issue in July, Hospo NZ met him on 5 Aug & the very simple change wasn’t made until today. Next backflip needed is reinstating open work rights for partners from December.
Migrants who have long departed NZ are receiving emails from the IRD saying they are getting the cost of living payment tonight. These are working holiday makers and students and other short term visa holders who are back home now. Lots of examples just like this….
Another story tonight of a high school science teacher from the regions resigning his job and preparing to leave NZ because he is split from his family. AND WE PAID HIM TO RELOCATE HERE!
Utter madness. We need to keep these valuable people here.
#RoadmapToReunification
Yesterday the Reserve Bank repeated what it has been saying all year that the economy is being constrained by labour shortages and immigration settings are yet to provide any relief.
We must open the Skilled Migrant Category to attract the workers we desperately need.
The literacy and numeracy results are incredibly alarming and shows that we need to act urgently to turn around achievement.
The results show two-thirds of high school kids can’t do the basics.
Labour is failing a generation of kids.
Govt spinning nurse numbers
Andrew Little said that 400 nurses have applied - but just 1/5 are overseas. The rest are already here switching visas
The new “streamlined” visa is delivering fewer nurses than when the borders were closed. We must offer nurses residence immediately
Michael Wood said there is no good argument for giving one sector special treatment
Yet FIFA has just got a huge exemption to hire staff on visitor visas
When schools were closing for a lack of teachers - Labour did nothing.
Nurses & Drs are leaving because they can’t get residence under 2021 Residence Visa due to a technicality. Rather than fix it, Faafoi has reverted to his “We will do something soon” approach. Problem is, Drs & nurses are heading offshore & aren’t waiting.
If you are in the Bays & need accomodation tonight - CITY IMPACT CHURCH NORTHCROSS. They are open all night and will help. They are not an official evac centre - just filling a gap. I have heard Council are setting up an evac centre on the shore & when I have details I will post
Tinetti must come clean and explain how it is possible that she did not know her staff were delaying the release of the Term 3 data to align with her political announcement
Wood claims settings to attract migrant nurses to NZ have been in place 1 week. This is not right. The immigration instructions (criteria) for the residence visa that nurses would apply for has not been released and the visa doesn’t exist yet.
8000 kids not enrolled in any school in March. This is double the number than at the start of 2019. Covid has had a horrific impact on chronic truancy & the number that have dropped out of the system all together. Governments response came this week - too little 2 years too late
The PIRLS international reading study released tonight shows the reading ability of our Year 5 students continues to decline.
NZ recorded its lowest score since the study began in 2001.
Without urgent change, our literacy and numeracy standards will continue to decline
New classrooms will sit empty if Labour continues failing to get kids to school and learning the basics
Only 1/2 of kids are attending regularly
Rather than excuses and empty classrooms National will restore confidence in the education system by teaching the basics brilliantly
While some schools are finding out they will lose thousands of dollars in funding moving away from the decile system. Labour have racked up a 21k plus power bill for a empty building.
Only Labour would spend $100k on a website that they then scrap🤦♀️
Instead of hiring more bureaucrats to design vague websites that don’t see the light of day the Govt should focus on turning around our shocking results in reading, writing and maths.
Watching the Minister and Government congratulate themselves for having to take such unprecedented and drastic measures in immigration because of a problem they created, and then took far too long to solve, has been a masterclass in political spin.
A quality education empowers young people to be the authors of their own destiny regardless of where they come from
After five years of a Labour Government that promised to ‘revolutionise education’ - achievement has never been lower
This Govt is failing a generation of kids
Faafoi’s claim that a fully trained & experienced nurse is more likely to leave her profession than an engineer or IT professional is utter rubbish. We need 4K nurses & if they can get residence in Australia immediately they aren’t going to come here & wait 2+ years.
Migrant families with adult children unable to study or work woke up this morning to an email inviting them to apply for the R21 residence visa. So proud we put this on the agenda and got this result. These kids can begin to fulfil their dreams early next year!
#BestBackflip
The Minister today was asked for 1 piece of evidence to back up his claim that nurses leave nursing once they get residence. All he could say was “it’s just common sense and logic” They are now making stuff up on the fly to justify their very bad policy.
Why is the Min. of Health not advising the a Min. of Immigration about our ICU nurse shortage so he can find solutions via our immigration settings? Gvt isn’t even collecting data on the type of nurses coming to NZ. We need to do better.
Another backtrack! Minister Wood removed open work rights for partners of migrant workers & yesterday he returned them. They now have the right the to work without a job offer & can move employers with no paper work. Almost exactly status quo. Common sense prevailed, finally.
Removing open work rights from partners of skilled migrants is the number 1 stupidest thing Michael Wood has done in the immigration portfolio. No wonder Hosking voted Wood as the greatest threat to the economy. Gvt must U-turn on this immediately.
@TonyStuart55
We got a result, they are fixing the glitch and hopefully will give those who would have otherwise secured a room priority next time. Not even Clint can get me down!😀😀😀
Kiritapu Allen said yesterday that they would review putting nurses on the residence slow track to see if it was working & that it had only been open a “few days.” Wrong. It was announced in May but the immigration instructions haven’t been written and the visa doesn’t exist yet.
Sorry, something went wrong. ONE hour in to the application process for the smallest group of migrants who can apply for the Resident 21 Visa and the system crashes. Minister Faafoi was warned this would happen but refused to stagger the applications.
#INZFail
@jacindaardern
Internationally trained nurses renewing their practising certificates each year shows migrant nurses don’t leave in significant numbers when they get residence, esp given these numbers measure both those on work and residence visas. Why do you keep saying they do?
Angry
@AndrewLittleMP
is back with nasty comments on the Nurses Union on AM Show. He prefers to listen to the one person he spoke to in Manilla over the Nurses Union or Health NZ re putting Nurses on the residence fast-track. He should listen to nurses:
✅Fast-track residence applications
✅Covid Contribution pathway to residence for Essential Skills workers
✅Decouple Work Visas from employers
✅Roadmap to reunification for split families
✅Work Visas for children of migrants who finish school
Jan Tinetti needs to explain how publishing a timeline of attendance data releases will ensure greater transparency when the Ministry of Education already gave her a timeline of data releases in November which didn’t stop her office delaying Term 3 data for another 10 weeks.
"It's the nature of opening a border", says minister Faafoi on why split families are at the back of the line for the staged approach to re-entry
#NZQandA
Proud to release the first part of our immigration policy. Good for the economy and our communities and the right thing to do by our migrants. If we want the best we need to be the best. Let’s be the best.
Jan Tinetti has just said in Parliament that she thought it was a coincidence that attendance data that she saw on the 14th of December was released 10 weeks later on the same day as her attendance announcement on the 21st of February.
Unbelievably, Drs and nurses are still leaving NZ because they can’t get residence. National is calling on Minister Faafoi to urgently change the 2021 Resident Visa criteria to include all healthcare workers, irrespective of their current visa type.
How’s this for the well-being of the Otaki communtiy?
The Immigration Minister must take responsibility for this. Our critically needed migrant GPs are leaving New Zealand because of the residency mess he has created. 😡
Min Hipkins all talk, no delivery.
300 teachers announced June 2021. 19 arrived. Last year I called for him to tag MIQ rooms to teachers. In 7 months & after many warnings all he has done is issue a PR. It will now be term 2 before these teachers arrive.
Instead of being helpful and supportive of his constituents, Greg O’Connor reportedly accuses a young Sri Lankan resident student of being from a corrupt country and having corrupt intentions. PM needs to haul Greg in for a please explain.
Gvt: There is evidence that nurses leave the profession after gaining residence.
Opposition: Show us just one piece of evidence. Gvt: *inserts new spin* “It’s based on logic and common sense rather than any particular evidence”
Proud to announce my youth MP Alicia Lemmer, head girl at Rangitoto College. Alicia is originally from Johannesburg & has been here 5 years, making her a perfect fit for taking on my youth shadow portfolio of Immigration. Alicia’s first day on the job was with
@chrisluxonmp
!
Labour must open SMC
The skilled migrants we desperately need like physios and pharmacists still have no pathway to residence in NZ.
We need to be the most attractive destination in the global war for talent but this govt is still napping.
National will ensure we are Teaching the Basics Brilliantly so we set every kiwi kid up for success later in life.
1 hour of reading, writing and maths everyday - and then maybe some Jump Jam 🙌
Watch out National MPs…after this inspiring performance by Silverstream Primary School students, Christopher Luxon wants to start doing Jump Jam at caucus meetings
@bdbean1
History is only one part of the social sciences curriculum, which includes geography. The ERO report said history has crowded out geo and the other areas which aren’t being taught as much as they should be. It’s important we teach all areas of social sciences. Pays to listen.
This has been happening for MONTHS. The answer is not difficult. Prioritise health care workers residence. Attract ICU nurses with guaranteed residence. Very soon should have been a year ago. How many nurses have we lost for all the dithering?
@KrisinMana
