NEWBIE SUBMISSION CALL UPDATE:
Getting a handful of check-ins. We got a little overwhelmed by the response (550!) & also life got kinda crazy this week, so taking a little longer than normal skull-time to get to everything... should get through them all by end of week! Thx! 💀💀
Aaaaaaand... "Skulls for the Skull-less" call is complete!!
Received 978 submissions in 1 hour. Took me almost 8 days to get through them all. Sent 45 acceptances. 4.6%! Probably won't need another call until May.
All done. 700 submissions. A slower start than I would have liked (it is 2am now.) And some amazing work. I am exhausted. Enjoy your skulls. Thank you everyone who sent me all these awesome words. I loved this so much. You all are the best.
We've got TWO (2!) Submission Calls coming in the next ~24 hours!

don't think we're gonna announce our best of the net nominations; it really feels like everything we published last year was a "best of the net." if you had something on HAD between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 please consider yourself as having been nominated.

🔥💀❤️🔥💀 today from
@BonesAndBeer
!!
FINALLY through everything! 123 subs, 2 hours, accepted 19. A little higher acceptance rate than normal, but there was SO MUCH good stuff. Excited to see a bunch of these appear elsewhere. Loved reading so many ppl mention how much fun they had collaborating! Thanks everyone!!
Reminder:
* open for 24 hours (i.e. until noon EST tomorrow, Friday, 5/7)
* you can only submit if you've only submitted to us once or never before
* keep it under 800 words
In the meantime... if I passed, or if you don't make it in today... let's do a thread here of other fun and awesome and exciting journals who are currently open and would love to read y'all's work?
I often end up accepting something like 10%. If I did that here, it'd fill us up for 3+ mos., which isn't *bad*, but isn't really our vibe? I'm gonna say no to a BUNCH of good stuff, looking for the extra special somethings.
How about a thread of other great, fun places open rn?
it's cool that so many people are into the journal and seem so into it. the downside is y'all are so into it, and know our vibe, and etc., there's practically no "easy declines" here to help speed things up.
loving seeing all these submissions with cover letters from people saying they ALWAYS keep missing our windows... and also REALLY loving the number of cover letters of first-time-to-anyone submitters, saying they felt encouraged to finally send something out! ❤️❤️
just to make sure every aspect of our process is filled with complete chaos, the previous year's guest editors are about to receive this comprehensive form to vote for our BOTN nominations (due tomorrow 😛)

crow here. trying to think of how to one-up aaron's last submission gimmick. what do you think? wanna meet me at some mysterious and remote coordinates with your piece etched on a stone mounted aboard a yoke-drawn cart?
Gonna zag and open up a short submission window but instead of replying as fast as possible we aren’t going to look at the submissions for 18 months. We’ll get back to you October 24, 2022.

reading for HAD! send me your weird summery darlings, your strange brief lyrics, your all-night campfire convos in those white plastic chairs (150 is the cap!)

is just about the encapsulation of my ideal HAD story

normal people leave the house and worry they left the stove on. I went out to walk my dogs and had a panic attack thinking I left the HAD sub call live
