Horrendous take — anti-Muslim speech and violence skyrocketed post-9/11. For those of us who grew up in its shadow, it foremost meant terrorist jokes at school and staying "quiet" on political matters we cared about, for fear of being "watched" by the government (Patriot Act)
Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly. Notably, there wasn't a mass outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence, which could all too easily have happened. And while GW Bush was a terrible president, to his credit he tried to calm prejudice, not feed it 2/

Honestly I think a lot of them might just take a break. People felt UG at NU was an academic pressure cooker, and some would take gap terms to focus on mental health. Given how bad mental health often is on campus “doing nothing” may have unintentionally good consequences.

I wonder if economists say "I don't do laundry cuz opportunity cost" because, as undergrads, they didn't know how to do laundry, so their mothers visited them every two weeks to do their laundry and clean their room for them.
Reminds me of the speech a faculty member would give the first year Harvard econ PhD students each year about how you should never do your own laundry because your life should consist of only two things: leisure and working on your next AER.

One of the authors here! Our argument is moreso that ICT shocks were temp to labor productivity growth (as opposed to the level of productivity). ICT continues to have an impact on LP, but the accelerationary effect that was present in the 90s has disappeared in the past decade.

That’s true, and there are of course economists doing great work on this. But all too often I’ve seen economists forego any mention of qualitative evidence (even auxiliary) and suggest that their method of “numbers” is a most superior analytical tool that can explain everything.

Labor prod. growth is still positive because innovation is always occurring, and much of it is in ICT. But the level of productivity growth is currently low *in historical perspective*, and is at a similar rate as in the 1980s.

Brief interjection: a lot of the PE macro stuff deals with debt. Familiarity with the representative agent macro models taught in first year grad courses makes life easier, though you don’t need all the heavy machinery.

So we usually use it for embellishments, just a sprinkle in Gulab jamun syrup or biryani. We break it out sparingly, unsure if cuz it’s a strong spice or cuz it’s expensive. We’ve also been using the same container for like 10 years so you’re good for a while

in a deeper sense the data scientist-splaining worries me to some extent in econ, too. Some econ history books I've read have dumb takes that are disputed or even disproven by history-dept historians. to the point where anyone who has studied history a little bit knows this.

Newer ICT investments, insofar as they’re well measured in the growth accounts, aren’t providing the boosts that innovations in the 18/1900s were. Inventions like the lightbulb, toilet, fridge, microwave caused massive gains to productivity and daily life that are hard to match.
