Mr. Wallenhorst was the ultimate educator, turning his classroom into a literal museum & encouraging students to question traditional narratives of history. He was also my first academic advisor (for my extended essay). Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun.

@SilbertJesse @itsafronomics I was thinking about this too. There’s a something deeply unsettling for me between playing around with dummies for “race” or “income” in a regression vs. going outside and seeing the rage and pain of actual lived experiences...

(THREAD) Finished reading Piketty’s ”Capital and Ideology” last week and thought I’d write some thoughts. TLDR: The first half was eh. The second half gets at some interesting inequality/ideology arguments, but I wanted more evidence for his positions. (1/20)

Horrendous take — anti-Muslim speech and violence skyrocketed post-9/11. For those of us who grew up in its shadow, it foremost meant terrorist jokes at school and staying "quiet" on political matters we cared about, for fear of being "watched" by the government (Patriot Act)
@paulkrugman

Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly. Notably, there wasn't a mass outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence, which could all too easily have happened. And while GW Bush was a terrible president, to his credit he tried to calm prejudice, not feed it 2/

@DianeCoyle1859 One of the authors here! Our argument is moreso that ICT shocks were temp to labor productivity growth (as opposed to the level of productivity). ICT continues to have an impact on LP, but the accelerationary effect that was present in the 90s has disappeared in the past decade.

@oagersnap @SilbertJesse @itsafronomics That’s true, and there are of course economists doing great work on this. But all too often I’ve seen economists forego any mention of qualitative evidence (even auxiliary) and suggest that their method of “numbers” is a most superior analytical tool that can explain everything.
