Take-home assignments are a big ask on candidates. People have obligations (children/family, jobs, community responsibilities, etc) that prevent them from being able to spend 4+ hours on take home work.

Don't push for a rewrite immediately. Land and expand! Look for a small new project that doesn't have to use the old tech stack. Prove it out. Get some wins and build up internal support and things will snowball.

Yup. I also think leetcode is a poor way to interview. You end up testing how long someone studied rather than measuring their skill level. My current BE technical interviews feature 1) 1h coding exercise 2) system design problem and 3) deep dive on experience

It's amazing for refactoring, but provides little value for new features. Why? It's hard to know exactly what you need for the feature until you experiment with it and get a prototype going. When i've tried TDD for new stuff, i end up rewriting my tests 3 or 4 times.

Gant, you nailed it on the lunchtime talk. I've given talks on ML before and they end up being an hour of math class. In 15 mins, you introduced everyone to what is possible in the browser and why we should care.

All you really need is a phone screen and a final round interview. Final round should include a fit interview (different person than phone screen), some real coding, and a few minutes to discuss the code w engineers. If you can't tell at that point, don't make the hire.
