You ever just notice how in tech we talk about 6-figure salaries as if it’s nothing weird.
“Yea, had to quit my last job. Super underpaid at 120k, new job at 190k. Respect my work and time”
The avg American individual income is around 45k
Just let that sink in
Telling people "you don't need a degree" for tech roles is often a recipe for disaster. People often think no degree === "I can waltz in" when not true at all. Yes you can do it with no degree, but you still need that same dedication and effort as if you were getting one.
I know we focus a lot on "getting into tech" and the junior to senior track
But to be selfish, I wanna hear more about the senior level progression in engineering
Going from senior to staff, principle, VP or CTO, etc
A lot of us stop at senior because we just don't know
Hey Juniors in Tech: I understand that the allure of working remote calls to you like a Siren to sailors, but it would not be ideal for your first job to be remote. The learning curve once you're hired is VERY high, and can be easier if done in person. Just something to consider
Tech interviews be like:
Round 1:
- Swear all allegiance to THE CODE
Round 2:
- Perform a blood sacrifice demonstrating your commitment to THE CODE
Round 3:
- Using THE CODE, perform an underwater scavenging of the shipwreck Titanic
Round 4:
- Using THE CODE, use THE CODE.
Just did a quick search for principal engineers on LinkedIn.
Of the 300+ I scanned through
Only 2 were black 😞
This is EXACTLY why I can’t stop until I make it to such a level. I must inspire young boys and girls that look like me, or die trying. ✊🏾
@j0zph
What y'all sleep on is how long it took for her to show her the damn hamster. Damn house took a whole voyage to get across. Lemme show u something in my house, just gotta turn around gah damn
To those who think they’ll never understand something:
I just spent ALL WEEKEND starting at no more than 5 lines of code. Just confused as hell. Spent around 60 hours on just those 5 lines
Woke up this morning, looked again, and had a Eureka moment.
Just keep grinding!!!!!
Not all software engineers understand business
Not all business professionals understand tech
But if you can sit in the middle of that and blend both worlds together into harmony; you’re dangerous
Anyone impacted by Spotify layoffs will receive a complimentary ticket to

2024.
It’s the least we could do to help with connecting you to new opportunities as we cross into the new year.
DM me for the promo code.
I’ve noticed a trend
Whenever I tell Americans that I was on vacation for 35 days, they’re often confused & asking “why such a long break”
My international friends though always are impressed and say I should try 60 days next time
We need to fix our attitude towards time away
TypeScript is terrible, and unnecessary. Just respect the rules of a dynamic language, and stop trying to push other constraints onto it from static languages.
If you like strong types, go back to such languages. But you don't see us waltzing up to C++ like " lets remove types"
Today I closed on my home. To find a home & close in under 30 days was nothing short of amazing🎉
More amazing was that I did it w/ an all black team that I assembled during my journeys w/
@rebuildingblack
. It’s such a great feeling knowing that those I know will benefit as well
The new website is coming y'all! A complete redesign, enhanced features & more to connect, & support black-owned business within your community (over 8,000 in our database to be exact 🤯)

I'm happy to announce that I have taken a role as a Senior Software Engineer at
@Mailchimp
working on their front-end product delivery team.
Thank you as well to
@bri_fugate
for the introduction to such an amazing company, and I can't wait ti work alongside her.
✊🏾🙌🏾🍻🥳🎉
I would like to help amplify the campaigns of impacted black-owned businesses to rebuild. To help centralize this information, I created a website which will include the campaigns, & ways to help them regain their footing within our communities

Black software engineers, how are you using your skills for The Movement? How would you want to use your skills? Can we team up?
The software development lifecycle doesn’t jive w/ the immediacy & adaptability of grassroots movements, how can we make an impact?

was a movie, and the IMAX is currently being loaded for 2023.
Bigger, Better, and all things software engineering. See you soon!
Software engineering is really hard. Don’t believe the “it’s really not” hype
People often forget that what they’re perceive as “easy” now was difficult to understand until a certain point
This isn’t to scare people, but we need to be very careful to not set ppl up for failure
I just wana repost this again that I’m EXCEPTIONALLY PROUD that 99% of the people we have as contractors or on payroll ARE BLACK PEOPLE
Don’t let them lie to you that we aren’t talented to have our own software engineering conference,
@renderATL
is PROVING THEM WRONG
11 days 🍑
I need statistics on this:
If you’re a black engineer operating at the senior level or higher please like this. It’ll be included in a podcast episode I’ll be on.
If you’re up for it as well, please say how long it took you to go from entry to senior+
We did it!
@renderATL
was a SMASHING SUCCESS welcoming over 350 people 🥳🥳
To bootstrap an entire experience from a tweet shows you that the power of manifestation is very real
Surround your life with dedicated people, and work hard. You can achieve ANYTHING

Atlanta needs an Atlanta.JS conf, or even Peach.JS that highlights the tech industry as a whole, what makes ATL different in tech, and why we're special. 🤔
There’s far too many people talking about “getting a job in tech” that has never worked in tech, which only creates more heartache for those feeling lost and confused once they land the tech job they were told they’ll love
I made a goal to reach senior software engineer in 4 yrs after graduating from
@msstate
Now I have a goal of making principle engineer in 3 yrs
I promise to make this happen to be an inspiration to little black, & brown boys, & girls everywhere!

Calling all minorities in tech 🗣🗣🗣
Check us out at
@renderATL
, a conference built around strong engineering & inclusive community ties for all those attending. We have your best interest at heart before, during, and after the conference and will do anything to help u succeed
I promise you that your small business that seems riddled with problems are the same problems that major companies like Amazon & Google face as well
The only difference is that they have enough staff to be able to break the problem apart multiple hands
Don’t stop. Keep going 👊🏾
Being selected as one of the 500 Most Powerful Leaders in Atlanta by
@AtlantaMagazine
is an honor, but what’s even more of an honor is being able to do what I do for the tech community through
@RenderATL
. This was never about me, but about what [we] can accomplish together!
I been off work the last 4 weeks and I feel sooooo rejuvenated!!! Thankful to have a job that offers unlimited PTO, work from home, and treats their people well!!
Happy to announce that it has passed the two weeks incubation period for COVID &
@renderATL
has had ZERO reported cases of attendees, volunteers, or staff contracting COVID-19
We took your health-security extremely seriously and it paid off in a undeniable way 🎉 💉

Hey
@airtable
, uses Airtable to power the database of black-owned businesses, & resources for our community to become empowered. We would love support if possible on pricing to help ease the financial burden of our open-source project. Could this happen?
Airtable stands with the Black community. Black lives matter. Here are the concrete steps we’re taking to provide resources and support to the organizations driving desperately needed change:
If you see me on Zoom or in person, just know I won’t be my usual self for the next few months
Breakups are hard, both emotionally and physically, especially when you both know it was right person, wrong time 😞
Welcome to the world’s largest software engineering concert & conference featuring
@KAYTRANADA
It happens in Atlanta, and is called
@RenderATL
Join us next June 12-14!!!!
This started as an idea in 2019, now it’s on businesses and buses around the city.
Thank you everyone for trusting me and my team to build something amazing, we’re excited you’re here!

Before I get attacked, IDC if you have a degree or not honestly. 2015 me, just graduated college me, oh yeah I didn't respect non-degree people. 2019 me, been in the industry for a minute me....idgaf as long as you can do the job and ask intelligent questions, and ask for help.
No panels at
@RenderATL
2025. I don’t like just a stage of agreeing the whole time
Instead, panel DEBATES. Let’s put two opposing sides up there to argue a point that we can learn and grow from
Think: CSS vs JS in CSS.
What an amazing discussion that’ll be
I’ve been alcohol free for the last 3 weeks.
I’m not drinking until
@RenderATL
2025 is finished
I’m doing this because I want to experience what it’s like to go through life as an alcohol free individual and still have fun @ events
This ensures that we make Render even
Achievement Unlocked: Vacation 🏝️
After 4 straight years at
@Mailchimp
of burning PTO to build
@RenderATL
I finally cached enough PTO days to get an actual vacation that isn’t entrepreneurial related.
I can’t wait to come back feeling refreshed to go into a strong Q1
✌🏾
When
@RenderATL
started in 2021 we had enough AV equipment for just one (1) box truck
Today at load-in the AV & Dock manager said we had six (6) 18-wheelers pulling up. That’s just for AV 😮💨
This economic impact is about to be NUTS!!!

To all my people learning to code: pick one language and really learn it. Jumping around is only hindering your growth, and not instilling foundational principles that will be necessary for future growth.
Once you get good in 1 language, I promise the rest will be easy
🚨 MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨
For
@renderATL
2022 we're giving back to the community by giving away 200 tickets to recent bootcamp & college grads!

Similar interview question I got from
@fb_engineering
on round 3
Interviewer: “Flatten this array”
Me: Array.flat(thisArray)
Interviewer: *looks up docs* ...well, I think this test has been dated, and +1 for staying up to spec. Now flatten it without ES6
Me:
The reason why I’m soooo in love with stocks is because I can literally print money daily.
I can wake up, and say “I need to make $200 today”, analyze a few stocks for a hour, and BOOM, $200 in 5 minutes
Printing literal money, and I wana help others do the same
If you feel like you’re losing everything, always remember that the trees loose their leaves every year but remain standing tall and await for better days to come 🌳
With 4,500 in-person attendees in 2024, I believe that
@RenderATL
just became North America’s largest developer focused conference
Correct me if I’m wrong
Wana say publicly. Thank you
@techgirl1908
for always being in our corner at
@RenderATL
When things went wrong (and right), you always stayed by our side to give encouragement
It’s impossible to do great things alone and you’re a testimony to that
❤️
Big proposed changes for
@RenderATL
2025:
- Dedicated stages per track. No more competing speakers for a particular focus area
- Lightning talks ⚡️
- Tracks will be: Web, Design, and Leadership
- More workshops!
- The keynote stage is only open for keynote presentations
Whenever I get a new job, the first thing I start doing is trying to duplicate my monthly income vi side hustles
This allows you to move in an abundance, rather than scarcity mindset
An abundance mindset allows you to take bigger risks at work because you’re never scared
I’m hiring a part-time DevRel to join the
@RenderATL
team
Comment below if you’re interested in joining North America’s most anticipated technology conference and music festival!
