Walter Lasecki is a predator. Read this. Read his "apology" email. If you still don't think that this has been a part of his strategy and manipulation all along, if you can still find it in yourself to give him the benefit of the doubt, then you are a part of the problem.

I reported the event in detail to AAAI in 2017 via a video call. Unexpectedly, Walter also emailed me an apology. I sent an email confirming both my interview and his apology to AAAI. I hoped he was contrite. I moved on with my life.

Always great to see posts about all the new awesome work accepted for publication! As a grad student, it can also be terrifying and dejecting to not have similar good news. So, in the interest of normalizing that for anybody else also feeling that way, 4/4 rejections at #cscw2019

Are you suggesting that the previous allegations weren't serious and urgent concerns? You condemn harassment, and yet 2 known predators continue to be CSE faculty. Is their privacy more important than our safety? Climate surveys won't fix this. Do your job. Protect students.

We are also concerned about the new information emerging in online conversations that we were not aware of. These new allegations raise serious and urgent concerns, and must be investigated.

I wanted to say something about this all day but I didn’t. Why? Because I was worried about how saying something against this decision might impact my upcoming visa renewal application. We shouldn’t have to think about these things. It should not have been a consideration.

Not only do advisors have too much power in these relationships, but also that, as incoming PhD students, most of us have no clue how to evaluate whether an advisor is making reasonable demands or not. We make the most important decision of our PhD (picking an advisor) too soon.

Trauma is more commonly associated with big T trauma experiences such as war, sexual violence. But there are also little T trauma experiences which have an adverse emotional impact, such as emotional abuse, harassment, or loss of a close relationship. Let's talk about the latter.

This. For anyone claiming that they are an ally but nobody has directly told them about any issues...if survivors did not feel comfortable talking to you, if you did not intervene when you saw something, if you’re clueless enough to think there are no issues: you’re not an ally.

the question isn't whether you know predators & harassers in our community. the question is whether the survivors felt safe telling you. so sure, say you had no idea, that nobody told you. that you never heard about it. but then take a minute and think about why nobody told you.

As usual, no good numbers here for women in computing, and specifically, AI. What's worse is the lack of numbers entirely for trans people or other gender minorities. By not including these groups, we are inherently introducing bias in how computing or AI is studied and practiced

While this is not a problem any individual (pre-tenure) faculty can fix, one small thing my lab is trying: Full, submittable drafts one week before the deadline. Hard deadline. All data in, all analyses done, all references in, all sections with text. Else, we don't submit.

How do people keep track of their research/project ideas, especially those that might not be directly relevant to their dissertation topic? I have a doc but it’s quickly becoming unsuitable for longer term needs because of organization costs. #AcademicTwitter

Really appreciated this honest opinion of a CSE student. 🙄 Couldn't help responding line-by-line because I didn't want to miss anything they said. Enjoy.

1) Stop thinking of chi as a party. Stop complaining about paying for alcohol. 2) tell everyone what happened re: harassment at CHI over the past few years. 3) educate people, require training before registration. Even when it’s unintentional, this kind of behavior is not ok.

How does a ML model’s stated accuracy impact people’s trust in the model before/after they observe its accuracy in practice? Ming Yin, @jennwvaughan and @hannawallach ’s #chi2019 paper finds that people adjust their trust for a model based on observed acc, regardless of stated acc

So it's been a little stressful recently. So I've been on an increasing number of times daily (it helps, okay!). So I might even get another cat. Who knows. These are all acceptable life choices imo.

Received a meeting invite for Nov 1... realized it's almost Nov 1 *2021*... as in, it's almost no longer 2021... while I've still been messing up between 2020 and 2021 when I think of what date it is... brb hyperventilating.

Agree. I don’t understand why we’re hiding behind organizational slowness and committee work (which is important, but like @snchancellor said, reactionary) instead of increasing awareness of when/how harm was caused and the steps that were/can be taken as a result. Let me explain

Having mixed feelings about misconduct and SIGCHI. CARES is awesome but is reactionary to events after the fact (I'm on CARES!). There are things we can do NOW - no free alcohol, setting conduct expectations thru the event, and training opportunities for bystanders #CHI2022

I want each one of us, as individuals, to take responsibility for these incidents. Every single one of us should be able to recall instances where something felt off. By now, you should know you've already been a bystander. I know I have. (2/8)

@roydanroy @ani_nenkova @rmalharb In most cases, this information (unfortunately) is restricted to whisper networks. Rarely do students feel like they have enough support to bring this kind of information to light. Does ignorance on the matter relieve the committee or department of all responsibility?

The uncertainty around work permits and visas for international students keeps rising. This is unfortunate. I’ve spent 7 years in the US education system and will be here another 3 before graduating. None of that leads to any certainty for jobs with potential policies like these.

The OPT program is crucial for retaining talented international students in the US. I relied on the OPT myself for summer internships during college and for full-time work after graduation.

We've tried to work around it with whisper networks and buddy systems at conference events. It's simply not enough. We need everyone in the community to come together and for every single one of us to be willing to do something about it. Are you? (7/8)

We can either come together and brainstorm answers to @syardi 's "What now?" or admit that the academic community does not care about students and is happy to have this power imbalance because it benefits faculty.
